<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Exemples a.

PROCESS FOR PREPARING EMULSIONNANTS USED IN THE
CONSTITUTION OF OINTMENTS
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of emulsifiers forming part of the basic ingredients of ointments and obtained from a condensation product of a mixture of a di-ester of fatty acid. penta-erythnite and the fatty alcohol di-ester of citric acid in molecular ratio 1:
1, esterification of citric acid and fatty alcohol giving rise, using an aqueous citric acid, to the formation of the fatty alcohol di-ester of citric acid These products are distinguished by their absence of 'odor and by their high and stable ability to combine with'.

the water.
It has been found, according to the invention, that it is possible to obtain particularly useful products, exhibiting the advantageous properties described above, by preparing condensation products having the character of esters, and having lipophilic radicals, both as regards the polybasic radical of citric acid, than the polyvalent radical of alcohol, simultaneously. Among the particularly useful products of this type, it is those derived from pentaerythritis, in the form of polyvalent alcohol, which are preferably employed.
It should be emphasized that the particular technical value of the products of the invention is based not only on their basic structure and the various advantages resulting therefrom, but also on the special nature. cial of their method of preparation. It is well known that the preparation of esters by conventional esterification methods encounters certain difficulties, since citric acid is partly converted, by prolonged heating, into aconitic acid by evolution of water. which subsequently results in the reaction to the harmful formation of resins.
According to the invention, these various difficulties have been overcome by using, as indicated, in the esterification process an aqueous citric acid. The use of an aqueous component in an esterification process is contrary to all current technical practices, since it results on the contrary in delaying the reaction, while promoting undesirable side reactions.
The esterification according to the process of the invention takes place by adding to the fatty alcohol product, prepared by heating it to a temperature of about 140 to 170 ° C. and, preferably, to 160 ° C. pressure of about

25 mm of mercury, such a quantity of liquid citric acid sufficient to react simultaneously with the alcohol. Thanks to the rapidity of esterification obtained, any side reaction and, consequently, any resinification and the The result is an esterification product of light color, of irreproachable quality.
The preparation of the second esterification product, namely of the fatty acid ester of pentaerythrite, takes place according to the conventional method, giving preference nevertheless to the method by tranaesterification (alcoholysis) of a methyl ester a fatty acid, a method which makes it possible to provide particularly clear products, with an acid number of less than 1,
The mixed esters of citric acid obtained according to the invention from the fatty acid di-ester of pentaerythritis and the fatty alcohol di-ester of citric acid exhibit particularly useful properties. temperature of the emulsions obtained with these products is remarkable, the temperature limit reached being very high, of the order of 50 C. The combining power with water is also appreciably better, namely that, no only the absorption of water, in larger quantities, takes place much faster, but also the total quantity of water can be introduced in larger proportions.
On the other hand, the ointments obtained by using the usual qualities of petroleum jelly are pure white and do not exhibit, as up to now,! a yellow tint; moreover, they hardly have! odor and can be scented for a long time. One at-; This no less striking advantage lies in their great ease of conservation and greater durability in the event of prolonged storage. The ointments obtained present, in addition, a smoother and softer structure, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
more flexible consistency, that is, they are not sticky, impart a pleasant subjective feeling on the skin and are more easily absorbed by it.
From a dermatological point of view, the ointments prepared using the products of the invention are absolutely safe.
