<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Improvements made to pedal cycles.
The present application relates to bicycles with pedals, including motor or velomotor bicycles, the two species being designated in the following by the general term of velocipedic vehicles with soft wheels.
The usual conventional safety pedal bicycles with normal wheelbase and normal crank reach, have an arrangement comprising a triangular arrangement (if one considers it lateral lifting) of the three points, namely, the seat, the handlebar and the bottom bracket, in a vertical position with respect to the ground and longitudinally with respect to the incompatteoment, this arrangement being that which is generally adopted in this field.

The effective configuration of the triangle formed by the arrangement of these three points is obviously adapted to the size of the cyclist and to his manner of riding. Such a ventilation arrangement will hereinafter be referred to as the "classic arrangement".
Such conventional bicycles normally have wheels fitted with pneumatic tires having an overall diameter of between 24 and 30 inches. In the present specification, the term "small diameter wheels" designates wheels fitted with tires and having an overall diameter of between 14 and 18 inches, but preferably of the order of 16 inches.
In main patent No. 596,724 of November 3, 1960, a two-wheeled velocipedic vehicle has been described having a conventional arrangement as described above and provided with two wheels, front and rear, of small diameter, as well as a frame comprising a main cadro element 3 or beam starting from a point located above the front wheel, in the vicinity of the end of this cell and oriented towards the spindle of the rear wheel, said beam pointing towards - or passing through - a point located in the vicinity of the bottom bracket, and comprising means for supporting a handlebar and a seat.
A tubular upright, intended to pivotally support a steering column, rises from the front end of the beam, substantially perpendicular to it, above the front rouo, while a tube of seat, intended to support a seat or a floor rises from the beam, in substance perpendicular to the latter, at a point close to the bearing of the crankset, the latter bearing being fixed directly or to the- below the beam, or inside the template of the section thereof, this beam trimming in a straight line from a point located

We see on the other hand that very large acnes, designated by 30 and 31, are available above the front and rear wheels, all being included in the overall height and length of the machine following - Before the present application, these sones can be used to house luggage.
21 and 22 denote cranks carrying @ pedals 23 and 24 and intended to rotate a chainring 25 which drives a rear sprocket 26 using a conventional chain 27 equipped with a chainring casing 28 formed by an annular plastic disc, with a diameter greater than that of the bottom bracket, disc to the outer face of which can be fixed dea ears or emboltemont buttons 29.
The height adjustment of the seat 4 is made possible by means of clamping devices comprising a locking system with a quick-release hand nut and bolt, system designated by 39 and which can be used to tighten the rod 5 dana the required position inside the tube 3. A similar clamping system 40, of a known type, maintains the rod 8, which carries the handlebar 7, at the height and in the position required with respect to the steering column 6 fitted in the steering tube 2.

The transverse cction of the beam 1 is glued from an oral to flattened side and whose minor axis 4et horiscntal, As shown in loa figs. 3 and 4, the beam is "notched" at its junction with the bearing 20 of the crankset, as indicated in there, so that the bearing 20, generally cylindrical, fits tightly into the hollow of the notch. 71 and is fixed therein by brazing or welding, or with the aid of an adhesive, over the entire width of the beam.
The lower end of the tube / ballast is shaped so as to form two legs 72, generally triangular in shape, which embrace the beam 1 and are fixed on either side of the latter by welding or by means of 'an adhesive. 74 denotes a support brazed to the rear of the bearing 20 and oriented rearwardly therefrom, so as to partially embrace the beam 1. This support is brazed to both the beam and to the legs 72 .
It will be noted that the assembly of the elements does not involve connection with tabs, which are expensive, nor does it require the piercing or perforation of the beam, so that the mechanical rigidity of the latter is not compromised. Preferably, the method of assembling the tubes consists of welding, or else of flush-head riveting, followed by brazing.

When you wish to use the bicycle, the levers 96 and 97 are replaced on the handlebars, without that it is necessary to make further adjustments.
In order to make the front element of the bicycle less bulky, the front wheel can be removed, while the clamping device 40, shown in fig 2, can be released, in order to allow the handlebar 7 to rotate by 90 *, from its normal position so that the front element is a flat object which in some cases can be stored more easily.
To reduce the bulk of the rear element, the saddle 4 can be removed by releasing the clamping device 39, while the luggage carrier 33 can be constructed in such a way that it can be releasably attached to the. stay 32 using a quick release coupler 98.
It will be noted that the junction between the elements 1a and 1b of the beam is located closer to the front column 2 than to the bottom bracket 20.
