<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
respectivement (figure 2).
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Seal."
The present invention relates to a seal consisting of two rings or washers, arranged concentrically and of diameters such that there is an annular clearance between the two rings, this clearance being filled by a rubber gasket, or other similar material. , made integral with the corresponding walls of the rings, the height of said lining being slightly greater than that of the rings, so that this lining projects over each of the flat faces of the rings.
The rings are made of metal, alloy or other material, having a resistance coefficient
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
compression sufficient to withstand the pressure exerted by vigorous clamping of two parts between which the seal is mounted, while this pressure causes the flattening of the parts of the gasket extending beyond the flat faces of the rings, which gasket then constitutes an annular seal on each of said back faces of the rings.
The seal thus produced has the advantage, over pressure-deformable seals, of allowing the parts between which it is interposed to be assembled, with a well-determined tightening torque, the interval between the parts tightened by screwing. being defined by the thickness of the rigid rings.
According to a first variant, the inner ring is constituted by an expandable metal washer acting to ensure the maintenance of the lining against the inner periphery of the outer ring, without it being necessary to provide special means of fixing of said packing. This variant allows the economical production of etanoheity joints, the three constituent parts of which are in the form of annular elements which can be obtained by cutting tubes of suitable materials.
According to a second variant, the ring constituting the bearing face, against which the lining is elastically applied, is omitted and this bearing face is then constituted by a bearing surface established on one of the parts to be connected.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being, of course, part of it.

Figure 3 shows the elastic gasket flattened by clamping the seal between two parts.
Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the attachment of the packing between the rings.
FIG. 5 shows, by way of explanatory example, an assembly in which a seal according to the invention is used.
FIG. 6 shows, in perspective and separately, the three elements of a seal produced in accordance with the first variant.
FIG. 7 shows, also in perspective, the seal produced by the assembly of the three elements.
Figure 8 is, on an enlarged scale, a cross section taken along the line VIII-VIII of Figure 7.
FIG. 9 shows, in axial section, a first embodiment of a joint established according to the second variant.
FIG. 10 relates to another truss for making this seal.
The seal is formed by two rigid rings 1 and 2, between which is fixed a flexible and elastic material gasket (Figure 1).
The fixing of the lining 3 to each of the rings 1 and 2 can be made by any known means.
It is advantageous, to improve this fixing, to provide, on the internal periphery of the ring 1 and on the external periphery of the ring 2, grooves 1a, 2a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
respectively (figure 2).
For the same purpose, and as a variant, chamfers 1b and 2b can also be provided on the internal periphery of the ring 1 and on the external periphery of the ring 2, respectively, as shown in FIG. 4, which shows , moreover, an alternative embodiment of the rings 1 and 2.
The rings 1 and 2 have the same thickness and the gasket 3 has dimensions such that it makes a slight circular projection 3a on each of the flat faces of the rings (FIG. 2).
When such a seal is clamped between two parts A and B (FIG. 3), the circular projections 3a flatten out and then constitute a seal on each face of the seal, as indicated at 3b.
The rings 1 and 2 behave in the manner of a thick washer interposed between parts A and B and, therefore, they determine the distance between said parts A and B. These can then be blocked. ced in a well-defined position, without risking subjecting the joint to excessive deformation, as can occur with a joint of the usual type.
The dimensions of the gasket: thickness of rings 1 and 2, outer diameter of ring 1 and inner diameter of ring 2, can easily be the same as those of different thickness washers of standard types.
The gasket with a gasket embedded between rings 1 and 2 is particularly suitable for assemblies in which the gasket is placed in the vicinity of the screw thread.
Thus, in the case of an assembly as shown in Figure 5, the seal is in contact
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by the outer diameter of the ring 1 with the thread 4 of the adapter sleeve 5.
The parts A and B can be locked in position by the appropriate tightening of the sleeve 5 without risking that, by flattening the seal interposed between said parts, it will occur either a constriction of the section of the passage of diameter d, or, on the contrary , an annular cavity at the location of the seal, both of these facts $ so much such as to disrupt the flow of fluid in the channel of diameter d,
In the variant shown in Figures 6 to 8, the outer ring 6 has the shape of a simple washer. The same applies to the elastic lining 7.
The thickness of said gasket is slightly greater (of the order of 0.5 mm) than the ring 6 so that, when said gasket is engaged in the bore of the ring -the outer diameter of the gasket. ture being equal to the internal diameter of the ring - the lining protrudes in the order of twenty-five hundredths of a millimeter on each side of the ring 6.
In Figures 7 and 8, the protrusions made by the gasket 7 on the faces of the ring 6 are shown with a strong exaggeration in the dimension of the projecting part.
The thickness of the inner ring 8 is, at most, equal to that of the outer ring 6, but preferably a little less.
The gasket 7 is held in place in the ring 6 by means of the inner ring 8, open on 8a, this ring, made for example in acior, has an initial outer diameter greater than the inner diameter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the gasket 7, so that, by expansion of the ring 8, the gasket 7 is in perfect contact with the internal periphery of the ring 6.
The ends 8b delimiting the slot 8a of the ring 8 are advantageously chamfered and rounded to avoid the risk of deterioration of the lining 7 in the vicinity of the slot 8a.
The seal produced as described above has, independently of its very attractive cost price, the advantage of being able to withstand very high pressures.
It suffices, for the same quality of resistance of the metal, to give the section of the outer ring 6, suitable dimensions to withstand the pressure applied to the seal, the inner ring 8 deforming elastically under the effect of said pressure, meaning the risk of reaching the breaking load.
In the variant shown in Figures 9 and 10, the joints are assumed to be mounted between the ends of two pipes to be connected, but it is obvious that this example is not limiting.
Using the same references as those used for Figures 6 to 8, we see, at 7, the flexible and elastic lining and, at 8, the open elastic ring at 8a,
In the example represented by FIG. 9, the bearing face of the lining 7, which, in the embodiment described with reference to said FIGS. 6 to 8, was constituted by the bore of the outer ring 6 is, according to this variant , formed by the bore 9 of a cavity or recess 10 provided, accordingly, at the end of a pipe 11.
The gasket 7 rests by one of its faces against the bottom of the recess and it is held in place
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
by the elastic action of the split ring 8.
The depth of the recess 10, that is to say the height of the wall 9 of the bore, is a little less than the height of the lining 7, so that the latter protrudes from the plane. end of recess 10.
The second pipe 12, to be connected with the pipe 11, ends at its end with a flat surface 13, held applied against the gasket 7 by tightening a nut 14.
The crushing of the packing 7 is limited by the abutment of the bearing 13 against the end of the pipe 11, which corresponds to the tightening conditions defined above and resulting from the presence of the rigid rings 1 and 2, or at all. less than the outer ring 6, between the ends of the parts to be connected.
Naturally, the thickness of the collar 15 surrounding the recess 10 will be determined to withstand the pressure applied to the gasket as described with reference to Figures 6 to 8, the mechanical strength of the collar being further reinforced by that of eorou 14.
Instead of placing the elastic ring 8 inside the lining 7, as has been described with reference to FIGS. 6 to 8, on the one hand, and to FIG. 9, on the other hand, it is possible to reverse the relative position of the two parts as shown in figure 10.
In this case, the bearing face of the gasket is formed by the periphery of a collar 16, established accordingly at the end of a pipe 17. the ring 8 acting to elastically apply and hold in place the gasket 7 on this collar 16.
The height of the collar 16 is obviously - as it was for the wall 9 - a little lower than the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
trim height 7.
The flattening of the gasket 7 is limited by the stop of the end 19 of the pipe 18 against the end 20 of the collar 16.
These embodiments shown in FIGS. 9 and 10 have, among other advantages, that of facilitating the connection of pipe elements, or the like, arranged in places that are difficult to access.
In fact, since the gasket 7 is held elastically in place on its bearing face, there is no risk of dissociating itself during the handling of the pipe, or other part, to be connected with another element.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described, in particular by substitution of equivalent technical means, without going beyond the scope of the present invention,
