<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
100 C, en particulier lorsque le polymère Présente une valeur de Ti inférieure à 100 C, On a essayé de réduire le rétrécissement en chauffant les filaments étiré* tels que ceux formés de copolymères de 70 % en poids d'acry- lonitrile et 30 % en poids d'acrylate d'éthyle, tout en les maintenant à une longueur constante ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Fibers of acrylonitrile polymers and their manufacturing process"
The present invention relates to improved fibers of acrylonitrile polymers and their method of manufacture.
It is known that when heating filaments based on thermoplastic vinyl addition polymers and being in an oriented form, these filaments shrink more and more. For example a typical filament of this class undergoes cumulative shrinkage of up to about 5% when it reaches 75 ° C, 80 ° C, 85 ° C., or the like, depending on the particular composition and prior treatments, in particular tempera-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ture and degree of stretching. For many purposes it is advantageous to be able to subject the stretched polymer fibers to temperatures as high as 100 ° C. without causing excessive shrinkage.
If the fibers have been formed from polymers having an apparent second order transition temperature (T1) well above 100 ° C., for example 105 and 150 ° C., and they are stretched while remaining at a temperature very high, but below the temperature at which they are virtually melted, it is possible to obtain fibers which exhibit a low degree of shrinkage even at 100 ° C. or more.
However, it is not possible and difficult to operate at such high temperatures and it is often advantageous to use polymers having Ti values of about 100 ° C. or even less, such as 25 C
The second order apparent transition temperature, denoted by the symbol Ti, is defined as the temperature at which the first derivative of thermodynamic variables, such as coefficient of expansion or heat capacity, undergoes a sudden change.
The transition temperature is observed to be an inflection temperature which is conveniently found by plotting the logarithm of the modulus of stiffness versus temperature. A convenient method of determining this modulus and transition temperature is described by Williamson in "British Plastics" 23, 87-90. The temperatures Ti referred to here are generally the temperatures at which the modulus is 300 kg / cm.
The resulting stretched fibers generally undergo excessive shrinkage below 100 ° C., or at
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
100 ° C., in particular when the polymer has a Ti value of less than 100 ° C. Attempts have been made to reduce the shrinkage by heating the drawn filaments * such as those formed from copolymers of 70% by weight of acrylonitrile and 30%. by weight of ethyl acrylate, while maintaining them at a constant length;
These tests have generally been found to be unsatisfactory due to fiber breakage, and when the filaments are allowed during heating to shrink somewhat to avoid breakage, relatively little improvement in the shrinkage characteristics of the fiber is obtained. Likewise, other properties which depend on molecular orientation (such as modulus and toughness) generally suffer as a result of the final filament treated.
However, the Applicant has surprisingly found that when the drawn filaments are formed from copolymers of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules comprising from 60 to 95% by weight of acrylonitrile and at least 5% by weight of at least one monomer of large molecular weight having the group H2C-C (R) - in which R represents hydrogen or a methyl radical and at least one cyclic component of large mass comprising at least 5 atoms in the core, the stretched fibers acquire a greatly reduced shrinkage characteristic when heated in the following manner without appreciably adversely affecting other physical properties.
To represent a sufficiently large constituent, the cyclic constituent is selected from the group consisting of (1) bridged cyclic radicals, (2) radicals having condensed rings, (3) monocyclic radicals substituted with au minus one organic constituent
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
having at least 3 carbon atoms, (4) in monocyclic radicals substituted by at least 1 halogen atom and at least one organic substituent having at least three carbon atoms and (5) in monocyclic radicals substituted by at least two substituents selected from halogen atoms and organic radicals having at least one carbon atom. The halogen atoms can be chlorine, bromine, fluorine or iodine.
The organic substituents can be cyclohexyl, phenyl, benzyl, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenoxyalkyl and / or alkoxy groups having from 1 to 24 carbon atoms. The cyclic component therefore may be a ring type radical having bridges, such as a bornyl or isobornyl radical or a substituted derivative thereof, a fused ring type radical such as a naphthyl or phthalamido radical or a their substituted derivatives, or else suitably substituted derivatives of radicals such as acyclic, aromatic or heterocyclic radicals with one or more rings such as cyclopentyl, cyclchexyl or phenyl radicals,

The oxyalkylene group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, which can also be used as a bond, can furthermore be substituted by one or more phenyl, benzyl, alkyl or alkoxy groups of 1 to 24 carbon atoms.

It is desirable that the bond between the main polymer chain and the high mass component is short. In general, the smaller the constituent groups on the core of the high mass constituent, the closer the constituent will be to the main chain of the polymer.

Acrylonitrile can be replaced totally or partially by methacrylonitrile. The copolymer can also include up to 35% by weight of smaller monomers, such as acrylic monomers or monomers containing small rings of 4 atoms or less.
The copolymers can consist exclusively of acrylonitrile and high weight monomer or monomers, however they can also contain less important monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic acids having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, esters of acrylic acid or esters of methacrylic acid of alkanols and alkoxyalkanols having 1 to 18 carbon atoms,
and limited amounts less than the amount bringing the copolymer to the water-soluble state, such as 5% by weight of hydrophilic monomers, such as, for example, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid lamide, methacrylamide and N-methylolaorylamides.
The copolymers can be made into fibers by melt spinning, from solutions in organic solvents or from aqueous dispersions of these copolymers. For example, the filaments can be formed by the methods described in U.S. Patent No. 2,914,376, November 24, 1959.
The present invention relates to the treatment of the fibers obtained by a process which consists in stretching the fibers, for example from 50 to 2,000% at temperatures ranging from 40 to 140 0.
The present invention consists in subjecting the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
fibers drawn in a heated atmosphere, for example air or nitrogen, at a temperature between 180 and 250 ° C. while preventing the fibers from shrinking up to more than 10% with respect to their length after drawing. Preferably the fibers are maintained at a constant length during the heat treatment.
The time can vary from about 1 hour in the lower part of the temperature range to about 30 seconds in the upper temperature range. Before releasing the heat treated fibers, they are cooled to a temperature of about 105 C,
The treatment increases the temperature to which it is necessary to heat the fiber to cause a given degree of possible shrinkage. For example, a fiber which shrinks by 5% when heated to 95 C before treatment, must be heated to temperatures of 150 0. or more before it shrinks by 5% after heat treatment according to the invention.
In addition, the treatment increases both tensile strength and expandability under normal atmospheric conditions of temperature, pressure and humidity.
The method according to the invention can be applied to fibers, filaments, yarns, films and fabrics formed from these fibers.
Yarns of continuous filaments of various acrylonitrile copolymers which have been stretched to about 650% during their manufacture are held to a constant length in an enclosure in which air is admitted at temperatures and during periods. times indicated in the following table. After the heat treatment, the yarns are cooled to a temperature below 100 ° C. before being released and subjected to testing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The following table gives the shrinkage properties before and after the heat treatment according to the invention, as well as the tensile strengths (expressed in grams per denier) and the percent elongation at break after the treatment. .
