<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Quant aux gaz sortant aux envrions de 500 C de l'étage de précarboni- sation 2 ils sont tout d'abord dépoussiérés par le cyclone 6, comme on l'a vu pré- cédemment, puis sont débarassés des goudrons qu'ils contiennent ; à cet effet ils sont acheminés par une canalisation 23, dans une ligne de condensation comprenant différents appareils montés en série et qui sont : - Une colonne à arrosage d'huile désignée dans son ensemble par 24,la- quelle assure:dans un premier étage 25, la récupération du brai et le refroidisse- ment des gaz à une température de l'ordre de 250-300 C puis, dans un deuxième étage 26, la récupération d'une partie de l'huile;

Numerous processes are known for the carbonization of coal (hard coal or lignite) making it possible to rapidly produce by fluidization a coke or a semi-coke.
In these processes, the fluidization gas is oxidizing or neutral and its nature defines different types of carbonization. Often, the charcoal is preheated to a temperature lower than the start of pyrolysis, that is to say well below 400 C
The heat necessary for the maintenance of the carbonization reaction comes either from partial combustion of the mass (case of oxidizing fluidization gas), or from the sensible heat of the fluidization gas (case of neutral gases, such as fumes heat or superheated steam), or radiation from the walls or heating tubes.
In all these processes, one obtains with variable yields and qualities, coke or semi-coke, combustible gas (more or less diluted with nitrogen and carbon dioxide), groudron and carbon dioxide. 'water. It is well known that carbonization at low temperature (that is to say between 450 and 600 C) produces on the one hand a semi-coke fairly rich in light and very reactive volatile products, and on the other hand. apart from a gas containing a lot of tar rich in high molecular weight products.
The fact, in this case, of carrying out the carbonization in several stages as has been attempted, cannot bring any improvement because of the considerable operating difficulties due to the tars coming from the distillation of the products carried out at the lower stages and which takes place. condense on the products of the upper stages causing them to stick, which prevents fluidization and quickly interrupts the smooth running of the process.
It is also well known that a fluidized carbonization at a higher temperature, close to 800 to 900 C produces much less tar (more strongly cracked), while the coke obtained is not very reactive and contains little volatile matter ( order of 2 to 3%) On the other hand, at the present time, a process is not known which makes it possible to obtain both an abundant tar with little cracking and a coke which is not very reactive with a very low volatile content. The present invention relates to a process making it possible to obtain this result, as well as a fluidization carbonization reactor for the application of this process.
The process according to the invention essentially consists in carbonizing at high temperature, by fluidization, the semi-coke obtained by carbonization, at low temperature, by fluidization, of raw coal, the fluidization agent for this low temperature carbonization being constituted by gases from high temperature carbonization.
The apparatus for the application of the above process consists of a two-stage reactor, comprising a stage of carbonization by low temperature fluidization of raw fines fed with fluidizing agent by a suitable grill, and comprising a stage of carbonization by high temperature fluidization of the semi-coke coming from the preceding stage, suitable means being provided for using the gases coming from the second stage as a fluidizing agent of the first stage.
It can be seen that, according to the process according to the invention, the following are introduced into the system: on the one hand, raw fines (generally preheated below 300 to 400 ° C. depending on the nature of the coal); on the other hand, a single fluidizing agent and that collected, on the one hand, a high temperature coke coming from the second processing stage, on the other hand, gases containing the products of low temperature distillation from the first floor.
These gases, containing a large quantity of tar rich in high molecular weight products, are preserved from any sudden action, since they are taken directly from the zone favorable to the abundant formation of tar and evacuated to be condensed before any thermal action. damaging cracking. On the other hand, they cannot have any bonding action on the products of the other stage.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The process has several advantages: after tar removal and debenzoling, the gas produced is found to have a high calorific value, much greater than that of the gases originating from the carbonization processes by fluidization in a single stage; the sensible heat of the gas is recovered up to the pre-carbonization temperature, which improves the thermal efficiency of the installation.
Other advantages and features of the invention will emerge from the description below given with reference to the appended drawings, showing diagrammatically and simply by way of example, a possible application of the method according to the invention in the case of carbonization by partial combustion. However, it being understood that the application is just as easily achievable in the case of carbonization by the sensible heat of the fluidization agent and in the case of carbonization by wall or heating tubes.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings shows one embodiment of an apparatus for applying the method according to the invention.
FIG. 2 represents an installation for the production of tar and coke by the process according to the invention.
In order to allow a clear understanding of the process according to the invention, this process will be described in particular, in the case of carbonization by internal heating, with reference to FIG. 1.
In this Figure 1, which aims to allow the presentation of the principle of the invention; 1 denotes a two-stage reactor; ¯2 the precarbonization stage; 3 the actual carbonization stage; 4., the arrival of coal; 2 the arrival of the fluidization gas; the dust cyclone for gas recovery; 7, the tubing allowing the flow of the semi-coke formed on stage 2, towards stage 3; and 8 the tubing allowing the overflow and evacuation of the fluidization coke formed in stage 3.
In a more particular way, the carbonization reactor 1 is a two-stage apparatus where gases and solids circulate against the current from one stage to another. The carbon enters by 4, at a temperature t normally between 200 and 320 C, in the precarbonization stage 2 where it is fluidized by the gases brought to around 800 C from the lower stage 3. A part of the sensible heat of these gases is thus recovered, which causes the carbon to undergo precarbonization at low temperature (usually between 400 and 55,000) which transforms it into semi-coke.
From this stage 2, the semi-coke passes, via the tube 7, into the lower fluidization stage 3, which is the actual carbonization stage, where it is brought to a temperature normally included. between 750 and 85000 and transformed by internal heating into an almost completely degassed coke which overflows through the overflow 8 at the outlet from which it can be recovered.
The oxygen-containing gas used to provide this internal heating can be cold or hot; it will often be advantageous to use air preheated to a temperature t2 normally between 400 and 600 C, which will be introduced at 5.
Usually, no or very little tar is given off during carbonization in this lower stage 3. The gases leaving this stage at around 800 0 can provide, at least in large part, the heat required to carry the heat. carbon in stage 2. from the temperature t at which it is introduced in 4 to the precarbonization temperature by releasing part of their sensible heat.
On the other hand, a large quantity of low-temperature tar is given off in the precarbonization stage 2, this tar being entrained by the gases leaving the apparatus after dedusting in the known manner by '] via a cyclone 6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This achieves the dual objective of producing a large quantity of tar and a coke which is almost entirely degassed.
We will now indicate the necessary adjustment means available; in general, in fact, the temperatures of the two stages 2 and 3 will be determined by various considerations such as the quality of the products to be obtained, the economy, etc. However, it is obvious that the temperature of the stage of precarbonization 2 depends on the temperature of the carbonization stage 3, that is to say that, this latter temperature once chosen, the precarbonization temperature could not be chosen arbitrarily if there were no means of adjustment.
These adjustment means are those set out below, it being understood that they can be used together or separately in the same device: the temperature t1 for heating the coal; tion; - The temperature t2 of the fluidizing gas and, optionally its composition - The addition of air, inert gas or water at one or more selected points of the gas circuit, downstream of the high temperature fluidized bed, for example - ple in the precarbonization fluidized bed, or alternatively between the two fluidized beds; - Indirect cooling or heating in one or more selected areas of the installation.
In addition to the advantages already cited or arising directly from the above description, that the process according to the invention has compared to the carbonization processes in a single stage, it can be noted that the calorific value of the gas produced is increased and that the recovery of the sensible heat of the gas is ensured up to the precarbonization temperature, which improves the thermal efficiency of the installation.
In FIG. 1 illustrating the process, stages 2 and 3 have been superimposed but it goes without saying that the treatment can be carried out in two separate reactors, the relative positions of which can be arbitrarily chosen, provided that the principle described above to obtain both high tar production and almost completely degassed coke is observed.
On the other hand, it is important to note that the description has been made in the case of carbonization by internal heating but that the process described can also be applied to carbonization by hot fluid or to carbonization by external heating or to a combination of these two processes, given that the use of one or more of the adjustment means mentioned above can still allow the temperatures of the two carbonization stages to be chosen within wide limits.
A description will now be given, still purely for explanatory purposes and in no way limiting, an installation for the production of tar and coke applying the process according to the invention which has just been described, with reference to FIG. 2.
The installation shown is of a conventional type, but differs from other installations in that it comprises a carbonization reactor or fluidizer of the type described previously in FIG. 1, that is to say in which one directly recovers the sensible heat of the gases leaving the carbonization stage at 800 C and which is used to precarbonize by transforming it into semi-coke at around 500 C, the coal which has been preheated to around 300 C , in an independent device which will be described in detail later.
For the purpose of simplification, identical elements have been designated by the same references as in FIG. 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The preheating of the air, introduced into the reactor at 5, is ensured by means of a conventional air heater 2 supplied by a booster 10 and heated with gas in a furnace 11.
The preheating of the coal, introduced into the reactor at 4, is itself ensured by fluidization in a separate fluidizer 12 comprising a pressurized hearth 13 which produces hot neutral fumes.
The wet coal consisting of unground washed fines is fed continuously, via a feed hopper 14, into the bed 15 where it is fluidized by the hot fumes coming from the hearth 13. The hot coal exits by overflow. in the pipe 4 through which it is brought into the precarbonization stage 2 of the reactor 1. The hot fumes leaving the fluidizer 12 are dusted by a cyclone 16, before being sent to the atmosphere.
The coke formed in the actual carbonization stage 3 exits by overflow into the pipe 8 which conveys it into a cooler 17 which itself operates by fluidization. The hot coke from the reactor is introduced into a bed 18 fluidized by any cold gas, air or fumes for example, which is introduced at the base of the fluidizer by a booster 19. Most of the cooling is provided by an injection of water 20 into the fluidized bed 18. The evaporation of the water is instantaneous and causes the temperature of the bed to drop to around 70 C. The coke thus cooled and absolutely dry comes out by overflow in a pipe 21 to be routed to storage or placing in wagons.
The fumes leaving the fluidizer 17 are dusted off by a cyclone 22, before being sent to the atmosphere.
As for the gases leaving at around 500 C from the precarbonization stage 2, they are first of all dusted off by cyclone 6, as we have seen previously, then the tars they contain are removed; for this purpose they are routed through a pipe 23, in a condensing line comprising various devices mounted in series and which are: - An oil spray column designated as a whole by 24, which ensures: in a first stage 25, the recovery of the pitch and the cooling of the gases to a temperature of the order of 250-300 ° C. then, in a second stage 26, the recovery of part of the oil;
- An electrostatic precipitator 27 which removes the gases from their average oil without the latter being mixed with water, the temperature of the gases being brought there to a temperature close to 100 ° C.; - An indirect condenser 28 where the gases are cooled to the operating temperature.
To obtain a perfectly cold, dry and oil-free gas, it may be advantageous to pass the gases through a second electrostatic precipitator 29.
It goes without saying that the invention has been described and shown for purely explanatory and in no way limiting and that modifications of detail can be made to it without departing from the scope of the present invention.
