It is known to fix the needle of a sewing machine against the needle holder rod by placing it in a conduit thereof and by tightening it against the wall of this conduit using a screw screwed into this rod.
With this fastening means, the replacement of one needle by another is relatively slow. In addition, due to the reciprocating movement of the needle holder rod during sewing, the needle sometimes falls if the screw has not been tightened vigorously. Such vigorous tightening increases the rate of wear of the thin thread of the screw and also necessitates the use of a screwdriver if it is desired to avoid hurting the fingers at each needle replacement.
The present invention relates to a device which does not have these drawbacks.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that said rod has a groove for housing the heel of the needle and is surrounded by a collar inside which is disposed at least one pressing spring, in the position. for fixing the aid, on the one hand, against a part elastically applied against the face of said rod opposite to that where the groove of the latter is located and, on the other hand, against a part whose position relative to the collar can be varied so as to vary its distance from the needle holder rod.
The variable position part thanks to which the spring tension can be modified is advantageously constituted by a cam which can be rotated relative to the collar so as to bring its periphery more or less close to the needle holder rod depending on whether we want to increase or decrease the force applied to the spring.
By the judicious choice of the profile of the cam, it is certain to always leave a tension of the spring such that the part applied elastically against the needle holder rod prevents the collet from falling, although the remaining tension of the spring may. be easily defeated in preparation for removing the needle or reinserting a new needle. In addition, the pivoting of the cam with the aid of a lever or a handwheel which is integral with it allows the spring to be given a strong tension in order to hold the needle firmly against the needle holder rod. .
Another object of the invention is another device for fixing the needle which avoids the drawbacks of devices in which a screw screwed into the aforesaid rod bears directly against the needle.
According to this other device, said rod has a groove for housing the heel of the needle and is surrounded by a collar inside which is placed at least one pressing spring, in the needle fixing position. , on the one hand, against a part elastically applied against the face of said rod opposite to that where the groove of the latter is located and, on the other hand, against the collar, the latter also having a groove which can be brought opposite the groove in the needle holder rod when this collar is rotated relative to the needle holder rod to a position for which the part elastically applied against said rod n 'is more against the face de.celle located on the side opposite to the groove of this rod.
Tests have shown that this device is particularly robust and allows the use of very strong springs without having to fear a variation in the tension of these springs due to wear of the actuator.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which schematically represent, and by way of example only, two fastening devices according to the invention.
FIG. 1 schematically represents part of a sewing machine equipped with a device according to the invention.

FIG. 2 is, on a larger scale, a horizontal section in the device according to the invention, this section being designated by the line II-II in FIG. 3.
Figure 3 is a vertical section along the line III-III of Figure 2.
FIG. 4 is a section similar to that of FIG. 3 for a position allowing the easy replacement of a needle,
Figure 5 is a vertical section through a plane corresponding to the V-V line of Figure 6 in; the second device according to the invention.
Figure 6 is a horizontal section corresponding to line VI-VI of Figure 5 showing the device in the needle clamping position.
FIG. 7 is a section similar to that of FIG. 6 showing the device in the position allowing the removal of the needle.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate similar elements.
In Figure 1, there is shown a part of a sewing machine 2 provided with a rod 3 on which is fixed a presser foot 4 and a rod por = te-needle 5 on which a needle 6 is fixed by means of a device according to the invention 7. This comprises a collar 8 which surrounds the rod 5 and the needle 6 and whose interior surface is applied thereto under the action of a spring 9. The latter is a helical spring placed under tension between a pointed piston 10 whose tip partially penetrates into a hole 11 of the rod 5 and another piston 12 'guided in a cavity 13 serving as a housing spring.
The piston 10 is elastically applied against the face of the rod 5 which is opposite to that in which a groove 14 is formed in which the heel of the needle 6 is engaged.
The piston 12 transmits the thrust of the spring to a cam 15 which is integral with an arm 16 which can be pivoted around the axis of a pivot 17 mounted in the branches 18 and 19 of a fork integral with the collar 8.
In Figures 1 to 3, the cam 15 occupies a position for which the spring has its maximum operating tension for clamping the needle 6 between the rod 5 and the collar 8, while in Figure 4, this cam occupies a position where the collar can be easily moved in the direction of the arrow X in order to allow the substitution of one needle for another.
In the device shown in Figures 5 to 7, the part elastically applied against the rod 5 by the spring 9 is constituted by a ball 10 '.
The latter is partially engaged in a surface cavity 11 'of the rod 5 instead of being at the entrance of a hole such as hole 11 in FIGS. 2 to 4.
To facilitate the release of the needle 6, instead of reducing the tension of the spring 9, the collar 8 is rotated with respect to the rod 5 so as to make this collar pass from the position of figure 6 to that of FIG. 7. In the latter figure, a groove 20 formed in the collar is located opposite the groove 14 of the needle holder rod, while the ball 10 'is no longer in the diametrically opposed notch 11' to the groove 14. It is therefore easy to introduce, at least partially, the needle 6 into the groove 20.
The spring 9 presses against a plug 21 which can be screwed more or less on a nozzle 22 of the collar 8 in order to adjust the tension of this spring.
It should be noted that with the device according to FIGS. 5 to 7, it is not necessary to act on this stopper to release the needle.
In the case where, as in FIGS. 1 to 4, the release of the needle is facilitated by a reduction in the tension of the spring 9, one could also use a stopper of this kind, but the maneuver would no longer be so fast or so.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
easy than with the cam according to these figures.
In the two devices shown in the appended figures, there is shown a single spring serving for the elastic fixing of the needle on the needle holder rod. S, having regard to the little space available to house this spring, it exerted on the needle a force considered insufficient, it would be possible to place in the spring 9, a second spring pressing on the ball 10 'or the piston 10.
CLAIMS. l.- Device for fixing a needle on the needle holder rod of a sewing machine, characterized in that said rod has a groove for housing the heel of the needle and is surrounded by a collar at the 'inside which is disposed at least one spring pressing, in the fixing position of the needle, on the one hand', against a part elastically applied against the face of said rod opposite to that where the groove is located of the latter and, on the other hand, against a part whose position relative to the collar can be varied so as to vary its distance from the needle holder rod.
