<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to an electrical assembly allowing the stabilization of an alternating current welding arc. It applies more specifically to the stabilization of the arc in a protective gaseous atmosphere, for example argon or helium *
Various methods are known for stabilizing such arcs which are either complicated and expensive, or have the very great drawback of causing disturbances in radio and television receivers.
In particular, in arc welding in an inert atmosphere, in alternating current where an arc is established between an electrode and the part to be welded, it is known that the stabilization of the arc can be obtained by the superposition of the current. welding of high frequency and high voltage current. The frequency used is around 1,000,000 periods per second and the voltage is around 2,000 volts. This high frequency current is produced by charging a capacitor which discharges periodically between two spark gaps. The high frequency discharges thus produced ionize the medium in which the arc bursts, which allows the arc to be struck and the. '' stabilization of the latter.
The high frequency discharges thus produced have the disadvantage of creating strong disturbances in radio and television receivers.
It is practically impossible to avoid the propagation of this disturbing high frequency energy, the propagation being by direct radiation and by transmission in the network of electrical pipes forming part of the network to which the high frequency generator is connected.
To stabilize the welding arc, it is also known practice to very quickly discharge a capacitor between the electrode and the workpiece, which discharge gives a voltage peak between said electrode and the workpiece thus ionizing the medium. in which the arc springs. This voltage peak must occur at each beginning of the half-period in which the flow of current is thwarted, that is to say at the start of each half-period in which the electrode is positive. arc operating on this principle are known, but they have the disadvantage that the discharge of the capacitor is done either through two spark gaps, or that the initiation of the arc requires a high frequency spark and therefore it There is always the possibility of creating disturbances in radio and television receivers.
Unlike the arc stabilizing devices mentioned above, the device for stabilizing the welding arc, in alternating current, in an inert gas atmosphere, in accordance with the present invention, no longer uses the discharge. of a capacitor to cause a voltage surge or to give a high frequency discharge.
According to the present invention, there is no longer any capacitor discharge through spark gaps and therefore there is no risk of causing high-frequency oscillations which could create disturbances in radio receivers or of TV. In addition, the assembly according to the invention gives a symmetrical welding current wave, with zero rectification and allows a long and very soft arc to be obtained; finally, a perfect pickling of the molten pool is obtained.
The attached drawing represents an electrical assembly according to the invention.
The welding transformer Tr of a conventional and known type, with its primary windings E1 and secondary E2, receives the current at the voltage of the network (220V or 380V) through the terminals of the primary winding E1 and supplies an alternating current of which the no-load voltage at the terminals A and B of the secondary winding E2 is of the order of 70 volts. A known device for adjusting the intensity of the welding current is shown in the drawing, schematically,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by R. This device is for example: a resistor, an inductor or a variable air gap.
In the welding circuit, a bank of variable capacitors C is connected to terminal B of the secondary winding, which bank consists of capacitors of the electrolytic type, not polarized.
This capacitor bank is adjustable so as to be able to adapt its capacity to the selected welding current.
Experience has shown that for a welding current having a frequency of 50 cycles per second, the best results are obtained with a capacity of 150 Microfarads or less per ampere of the welding current. As the frequency of the welding current increases, the upper limit of the capacitance (150 Microfarads) decreases proportionally. The bank of electrolytic capacitors C makes it possible to choose a capacity adapted to the intensity of the welding current that is to be used. A pre-adjustment of the welding current is made by means of the battery: 'of variable capacitor C and then a fine adjustment, preferably of the continuous type, is obtained by means of the device R.
When the welding transformer Tr is energized and when the welding electrode El is brought into contact with the workpiece P, at the moment when the electrode is of negative polarity, an arc arises and a welding current Is flows from the electrode to the workpiece, thus charging the capacitor C.
At the moment of the inversion of the polarity- $, that is to say when the electrode becomes positive, therefore at the beginning of the half-period during which the arc should normally be extinguished, the capacitor C terminals of sufficient potential to prevent arc extinction.
A stable, long and soft welding arc is also obtained which allows perfect welding and since there is no periodic discharge of the capacitor between two spark gaps, no disturbance occurs in the radio receivers and of TV.
Although in the above description and in the drawing, the variable capacitor bank C is connected between the terminal B and the welding electrode El, it could in the same way and with the same results be connected between the terminal A and the workpiece.
