<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
L'emploi d'un milieu autre que l'eau a l'avantage que a) La composition peut être formée et conservée en fût en une entité , puisqu'aucune ionisation ni condensation ne peut se produire suffisamment . jusqu'à ce que l'évaporation du solvant ait lieu quand la couche appliquée sêche. b) des ingrédients formant des films résistants et in- solubles à l'eau , ingrédients qui sont normalement insolu- bles dans l'eau et par conséquent accroissent la résistan- ce à l'humidité de la couche formée peuvent être incorpo- rés dans la solution ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EXEMPLE 1

It is generally recognized that the most successful means of ensuring a combustible material, such as wood and wood-based materials (eg cardboard, hard or soft insulating fiberboard and the like), is delayed. to combustion, is to apply a potentially intumescent surface layer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
A layer of this kind swells with heat or under direct flame, to form an insulating, bloated, non-inflamed cellular mattress which isolates the underlying matter from the heat source and at the same time excludes the arrival of heat. 'oxygen. The principle is also advantageous for delaying the transmission of heat to a treated metal surface. among such products, a typical composition is one which incorporates a foaming ingredient (eg, mono- or diammonium phosphate), urea and formaldehyde in a condensing stage. tion and a starchy substance such as starch.
These ingredients are mixed, in the finely pulverized state, in optimum proportions, all together with inert pigments, which provide color and / or opacity to the layer and are applied to the potentially combustible surface in the form of a grout or an aqueous suspension. One such composition is described in Specification No. 632.844.
The aforementioned compositions have two major drawbacks. First, the development of the layer is achieved by the chemical condensation of urea and formaldehyde, catalyzed by mono-ammonium phosphate or other acid reagents; these three ingredients (the combination of which produces with heat one of the best known insulating foam mattresses) cannot, therefore, be mixed long before the application of the composition on the layer, otherwise the whole solidifies in the container .
The disadvantage is overcome in practice, by conditioning the composition in two separately packaged components -
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The use of a medium other than water has the advantage that a) The composition can be formed and stored in a barrel as one entity, since no ionization or condensation can sufficiently occur. until solvent evaporation takes place when the applied coat dries. b) film-forming ingredients which are resistant and insoluble in water, ingredients which are normally insoluble in water and therefore increase the moisture resistance of the formed layer may be incorporated into the film. the solution ;
and c) the water soluble ingredients will not crystallize when the solvent from the medium evaporates, and, since a relatively long liquid mixture is prepared, charges and pigments can be intimately dispersed in the medium by mechanical grinding. The result of these characteristics is that an enamel-like layer can be formed.
It is generally preferred to incorporate in the combustion retardant composition, in non-aqueous solution, prepared according to the invention, not only urea but also a phenol, each of these compounds being condensed with formaldehyde. in an organic solvent medium,
A particularly suitable organic solvent is one which is or comprises a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol or ethanol.
Such an alcohol can be used in conjunction with an aromatic hydrocarbon such as xylene or a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon such as para-chloro-meta-xylene.
If the composition is intended to give an opaque surface layer of the enamel type, there is incorporated therein a substantial dose of a water-insoluble filler or pigment, which may be, for example, rutile,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
which must be mixed thoroughly before use and this method frequently has disadvantages:
Second, the most effective foaming ingredients are highly soluble in water, and the layers formed of compositions containing them are sensitive to moisture and prone to efflorescence throughout their life. Moreover, since they are soluble in water. water, they in fact form, in the aforementioned grout, a saturated solution, and. as the water evaporates from the applied layer, unwanted crystals are formed, eventually exhibiting a rough textured surface.
The main object of the present invention is to produce intumescent compositions which will avoid the aforementioned disadvantages and will be suitable for the formation of surface layers which may be 'transparent' or have the appearance of an enamel:
An intumescent composition according to the invention is essentially non-aqueous and comprises urea and formaldehyde partially condensed in a medium consisting of a volatile organic solvent. and a foaming ingredient which may be an ammonium phosphate, for example, a mono and / or diammonium phosphate, or a salt or salts, with ammonia or an amine (preferably a lower stage aliphatic amine) of a organic partial ester of orthophosphoric acid.
A particular example of a foaming agent of the latter type is a mixture of mono and dibutyl phosphates with a minimal supply of orthophosphoric free acid, completely or partially neutralized by ammonia or a lower stage aliphatic amine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
anatase, asbestin, vermiculite mica and / or antimony oxide.
In this case, it is particularly desirable that the composition comprises phenol as well as urea condensed with formaldehyde.
In cases where the composition is to give a transparent surface layer, the foaming ingredient should be a salt or salts with ammonia or an amine, of a partial organic ester of orthophosphoric acid, since the ammonium phosphates, such as mono or diammonium phosphates, can become opaque when the organic solvent evaporates from the laid layer,
In some cases, instead of incorporating into the composition a simple urea-formaldehyde condensation product, an aliphatic, eg, butyl, urea-formaldehyde resin may be employed.
This can be particularly useful in the preparation of transparent surface layer formulas, and it is then desirable that the foaming ingredient be an organic ester of phosphoric acid, as mentioned above.
A plasticizer is usefully incorporated into the composition, especially in the case of formulations for transparent surface layers, and particularly useful as plasticizers are glyceroxy-toluene and glyoeroxy-ditolune.
As indicated above, the compositions forming the subject of the invention can comprise, in additional addition, a resin forming film insoluble in water and resistant to. humidity.
The following shows how we can produce comps.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
if% ions. typical according to the invention: urea and formaldehyde (or a substance such as hexamethylene tetramine which releases formaldehyde), together with a phenol or a substituted phenol, are mixed together and stirred in a suitable portion (indicated by examples below), of a non-aqueous solvent, more particularly a lower aliphatic alcohol.
The mixture is allowed, or then allowed to set, to a certain degree of condensation by bringing it, for a certain time, to a predetermined temperature, or by subjecting it to a sequence of time / temperature conditions.
This point will be clarified, indicating that, if methanol is used as a solvent, a suitable heating sequence consists of a period of operation at gentle reflux, from 65 to 70 0, for about 1 h I / 2 after which one adds ethanol or substituted phenol; this addition is followed by heating to reflux for a period varying from I / 2 to 4 hours.
It is not possible to fix the precise degree of oon- densation of the resin, resulting from this manipulation, but one can say that one is at the optimum point when the product of condensation has a viscosity, at the temperature. - chamber erasure, located in the 20 to 30 second zone measured by the "Oup Ford" standard n 4.
The product, which constitutes the resin or binder component of the composition, is then cooled and thereafter the finely pulverized foaming ingredient and filler or pigment (if necessary) are added while stirring the mixture.
This can then be carried, again ', to a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
temperature of, in other words, 60 C for one I / 2 hour to allow additional condensation *
The final mixture. and dispersing can be effected by mechanical means such as typically used in the paint industry,

There are many cases in which a clear rather than an opaque varnish is desired; for example, when the wood faoe or veneer sheet must be immune to flame, but at the same time must retain the aesthetic appearance of its natural grain.
Such a varnish cannot be obtained, only by the elimination of the formulas given in Examples I to VI, opaque pigments (for example, anatase, asbestin, mioa) the foaming element (for example ammonium phosphate) can also become opaque when the organic solvent medium evaporates from the applied layer.
However, by replacing the monoammonium phosphate with a partial, mono or di-substituted organic ester of orthophosphoric acid, a layer can be obtained which remains transparent on drying.
