<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The main patent N 550,693 related to a machine for manufacturing tubes from a strip of sheet metal, by winding the latter in a helical manner, and welding close edges.
The present application relates to improvements to said machine and also relates to a manufacturing process and the products obtained by this process and by means of the improved machine according to the invention.
According to a first improvement, the passage offered to the sheet for its introduction into the shaping device comprising at least one series of bodies rotating freely around axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the device is located between the longitudinal axis of the device. shaping device and the ground on which the machine rests.
According to another improvement, the sleeves mounted on the shafts of the shaping device do not consist of continuous liners but of sleeves mounted on the same shaft, having a fixed spacing between them; ball bearings', limiting their displacement are fixed on the shaft on the side of the sleeves directed towards the end of the shaping device through which the finished tube leaves it. There is provided on each shaft at least three sleeves arranged so as to support the marginal regions of the sheet metal strip and a middle region substantially equidistant from them.
The sleeves can be distributed along helix turns of the same pitch as the helix formed by the edge of the sheet. It is also possible to use longer sleeves provided on their outer surface with a projecting rib of helical shape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Another important improvement consists in that the machine comprises two welding heads, the first placed in the interior space of the tube being formed, following it outside the tube formed. Advantageously, the internal welding head is carried by an arm connected to a support outside the bube by a system of connections with 3 degrees of freedom. The control of this device can be mechanical, electrical or pneumatic.
The invention also provides a method of manufacturing tubes by fixing by welding the close edges of a strip of sheet metal wound in a helix, in which a first weld is carried out inside the tube, at the start of its formation. ci, and a second weld, external to the tube, at or near the exit point of the tube from the machine. It has not heretofore been known to produce spirally wound tubes having both an inner weld and an outer weld as provided for by the present invention.
Another improvement consists in that the crew pushing the sheet into the confôrmateur assembly '. Comprises a device for eroding the edges of the sheet, the action of which is exerted on the latter during the progression of the sheet towards the shaping device or shaping assembly.
The machine which is the subject of the present improvements will be described below in its main features with the help of the drawings which represent examples of embodiments. In these drawings - Fig. 1 shows a cross section through the shaping device of the machine.
- Fig 2 shows a tree of the previous device. provided with three sleeves - one of which is in axial section.

- Fig. 6 is a schematic view showing the direction of deflection of the tube in an ordinary machine.
- Fig. 7 is an elevational view of the universal support of the inner welding head.

- Fig. 10 is an elevational view of a shot blasting box - Fig.ll shows, side view, a set of nozzles projecting the shot onto the edge of the sheet.
- Fig. 12 is a plan view of the arrangement of the cutters attacking the edges of the sheet.
- Fig. 13 is a side view of a milling cutter, - FIG. 14 is a view of the same cutter, end.
FIG. 1 is a cross section of the shaping head of the machine, similar to FIG. 3 of main Belgian patent no.550,693. The base of the shaping head has been designated here by 1, and by 2 a frame in an arc of a circle intended to support, at the end, the shafts 2/1, 2/2, 2/3 ..... 2 / 9 carrying the sleeves 2 / la, 2 / 2a, 2 / 3a .... 2 / 9a which are the rotating bodies constituting the outer guide cage, 3 denotes a circular member supporting the shafts 3/1, 3/2. ..... 3/8 carrying the sleeves 3 / la, 3 / 2a, ....... 3 / 8a which are the rotating bodies constituting the internal guide cage. 4 designates the plate engaging in the machine -
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that is to say between the sleeves of the inner and outer cages - following arrow F.
In this device, the sheet 4 which penetrates into the bottom of the machine can always remain at the same distance from the ground, whatever the dimensions of the cages or the adjustments which are subjected to the sleeves. In the machine which is the subject of the main patent, the sheet engaged. On the other hand, approximately tangentially to the sleeves of
EMI4.1
aw d.eorcv cl, ceu -c the inner cage: any modification to the diameter of this caused a change in the distance of the sheet from the ground, which also caused a displacement of all the preparation and guide members of the sheet before entering the machine. The device which is the subject of the present improvement overcomes this drawback.
Fig. 2 shows another improvement to the device forming the subject of the aforementioned Belgian patent. We see there in 2/1 a shaft belonging for example to the outer cage and whose sleeve 2 / la, instead of being continuous and extending over the entire length of the shaft, is reduced to a roller; peripheral surface of this roller is in contact only with the marginal edge of the sheet. Sleeves
2 / la 'and 2 / la ", the first of which is disposed towards the middle of the sheet metal strip 4, and the second of which cooperates with the other edge of the sheet 4, complete the equipment of the shaft 2 / 1 /.
The thrust exerted on the rollers by the winding sheet is exerted in the direction of arrow F ', pointing towards the end of the shaping head through which the finished tube exits.
To resume this thrust, there are thrust collars such as 2 / 1-4 wedged on the shaft by screws such as 2 / 1-5, a ball thrust system such as 2 / 1-6, 2 / 1-7 is interposed between each roller 'and the corresponding collar.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The short sleeves or rollers such as described are advantageously placed on the shafts of the cages so that the homologous rollers carried by shafts successively covered by the same region of the sheet possibly in pairs overlapping the joint line are arranged / following turns propeller not the same as that formed by the sheet when winding in the forming head. Splitting the sleeves has the following advantages: construction costs are reduced. As the contact surfaces are small, there is less energy loss through friction. The pebbles, which all rely on the. sheet, are worn evenly. The sliding forces on the sleeves are reduced.
According to another development of the inventive idea, the short manchans mentioned above can be replaced by longer sleeves, provided at their periphery with helical ribs in the same way as that of the helix formed by the sheet which s' wraps in the machine. Such a sleeve is visible at 3 / la in FIG. 5.
The helical rib that it carries is designated by 3 / la '.
Figures 3 and 4 show the reasons for this device. Consider (Fig. 3) an ordinary sleeve 3 'that the sheet 4 licks tangentially. The plate approaches the sleeve in a direction which forms an angle Ó with that of the axis of the sleeve. If D is the diameter of the sleeve, the path of a point taken for example on the edge of the sheet will, for one revolution of the sleeve be equal to ÒD, while the path taken by a point of the CosÓ sleeve will be equal to Ò D So there is a certain slippage.
If the contact between the sheet and the sleeve surface is made along a helix turn of pitch equal to that of the tube which is wound up as shown in Fig.5, the relative sliding will be eliminated; at the same time the tendency of the finished tube (see Fig. 6), 6, coming out of the beast 7, to deviate in the direction of arrow F "will be suppressed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Fig. 7, 8 and 9 represent the elements of a: orientable welding station subject to aulie improvement of the aforementioned Belgian patent N 550,693. The new machine according to the invention comprises two welding heads, one inside the tube and the other outside. It is convenient to carry out the welding as soon as the sheet enters the machine, at the lower part of the pipe, the external snudure then being carried out by a head placed for example above or near the top of the pipe. In FIG. 7 is represented by 8 the internal welding nozzle; the outer weld head is not shown. Its location is however indicated by the arrow C.
The welding nozzle 8 is carried by a rigid tube 9 which serves as a guide for the welding wire 10 placed inside, and for the tube 11 for supplying CO2 (when, as it is advantageous) the welding is made in an atmosphere of this gas.
The tube 9 is carried by a sleeve 12 pivotally mounted at 13 on a carriage 14 movable on a support 17 using a screw 15 controlled by a handwheel 16.
The displacement of the nozzle 8 is thus adjusted in the axial direction of the finished tube 6.
The support 17 is integral with a carriage 18 'which can be moved by means of one screw 19 relative to a support sleeve 22. The screw 19 is controlled by a handwheel 20 or by means of a cardan shaft 21, by another steering wheel
20 'placed within reach of the worker who drives the machine.
It is thus possible to move the welding nozzle perpendicular to the axis of the finished tube.
The sleeve 22 (see Fig. 7) slides on a column 23 fixed at 24 to the frame 1 of the shaping head 7
A locking screw 25 makes it possible to immobilize the sleeve 22 relative to the column 23. It was thus possible to adjust the height of the welding nozzle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It will be understood that with this device the outer shoe of the tube 6, placed opposite the welding nozzle 8 (shoe not shown) will be much simpler than the inner shoe corresponding to an outer welding head.
Its monitoring will also be facilitated.
The adjustments are made on sight by the driver who is aware of the phenomena by the bright point visible outside the tube when the nozzle 8 is in action.
The mechanical controls described here by way of example can be replaced by electrical or pneumatic controls.
Instead of welding in a CO2 atmosphere, it is possible to weld in powder or otherwise.
Another improvement which is the subject of the present application consists of a device for preparing the edges of the sheet by erosion. The main purpose of this operation is to clean the sheet metal in the regions which are to be welded. According to a first device visible in FIGS. L0 and 11, three jets of compressed air loaded with metal shot are projected onto the edge of the sheet 4, brought by the nozzles 26, 27, 28 supplied by a pipe 29.
The used shot is recovered at the base 30 of a box
31 closed by a cover 32, these members serving as an outer casing for the nozzles. The sheet 4 passes between the box and. the cover, fitted at their edges with sealing flaps
33, 34 made of rubber or the like.
According to another embodiment, the edges 4a, 4b of the sheet 4 guided between the rollers 41 are attacked,
41 'and 42.42' before entering the machine, by end-cutting cutters 35, 36, driven by motors
35a, 36a that can be approached or moved away from the sheet.
The details of these strawberries, known in themselves, appear immediately
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
especially in Figs. 13, 14. The sheet progresses, between the cutters, following the arrow Q.
It is obvious that many modifications could be made to the devices described above by way of example, without departing from the scope of the invention.
