<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to a centrifugal air classifier for classifying, separating or fractionating granular or powdery materials. The main object of the invention is a centrifugal air-operated binder which establishes a precise limit for the fractionation of materials of all kinds to be processed in the binder, with respect to the special characteristics of these materials, and which allows the most efficient use. possible efficiency of said binder ,,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention relates to a centrifugal air classifier in which the material to be classified is introduced into a fixed separation chamber in the form of a uniformly distributed annular curtain and is separated in the separation chamber into a crude fraction and a fraction. fine,
by means of a gas stream introduced into a space surrounding the separation chamber through a tangential inlet, so as to impart a rostatinous movement to it, then penetrates into the separation chamber around the wax conference of the latter and finally leaves the filing cabinet in the center of the separation chamber.
The above-mentioned object is achieved by the fact that the width of the tangential gas inlet and the height of the separation chamber are adjustable, this
Which makes it possible to vary both the components of the tangential and radial velocities of the gas stream flowing through the separation chamber *
According to a preferred embodiment, the separation chamber comprises a turntable provided with blades or blades, said plate being mounted so as to rotate in a plane substantially perpendicular to the annular curtain of material, and to impart to the material a component of tangential velocity substantially corresponding to the velocity component of the gas stream when the width of the tangential air inlet is adjusted to its average position.
The material to be classified will thus receive an initial speed component which is normally close to that which must be imparted by the gas current, so that the work that the gas current must provide, lice impart the desired tangential speed to the material, corresponds to a weak acceleration or even a weak deceleration of matter. The fractionation efficiency of the device is thus increased.
The present invention is explained in more detail below, with reference to the attached drawings, illustrating two embodiments cited by way of non-limiting example and in which: FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment in vertical section median.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
fig.2 is a horizontal section through 11-11 of fig.1
Fig. 3 is a vertical median section similar to that of Fig. 1 but illustrating a second embodiment
Referring to figs-1 and 2, the centrifugal air file comprises a substantially cylindrical casing 1 manufactured with a tangential air intake 2, and a lower part 3 fixed to the casing 1, part 3 constituting a magazine for collecting the separated raw material, and being provided with an outlet 4 for discharging the raw material.
A central air outlet 5 is disposed adjacent to the center of the upper part of the lower part 3 and communicates, via a duct 6 which passes through the wall of the lower part 3, with a duct 7 which leads to a fan (not illustrated) and which is provided with an adjustment register 8, which makes it possible to adjust the air flow rate @.
A conical ring 9 which constitutes the bottom wall of the separation chamber is fixed around the circumference of the air outlet 5. Upwardly the separation chamber is defined by the bottom wall of a conical distributor. material 10, and by a frustoconical flange 11, fixed to a sleeve 12 surrounding the material distributor 10 the sleeve 12 is integral with a cylinder 13 which extends upwards, through a central opening, in a roof 14 which closes the upper part of the binder, The material distributor 10 is integral with a rod 15 arranged concentrically with respect to the cylinder 13. The upper part of the rod 15 is threaded and carries a nut 16 which rests on a bracket 17 integral with cylinder 13.
By tightening the nut 16, the sleeve 12 can be engaged with a number of spacer members 18 attached around the material distributor 10, which determine the width of the clearance between the material distributor 10 and the sleeve 12.
The threaded upper part of the rod 15 also comprises a flywheel 19, \ resting on a bracket 20 carried by the roof 14. By means of this flywheel, the assembly comprising the material distributor 10, the cylinder 13 and the sleeve 12 with the organs which depend on it,

can be raised or lowered, so as to vary the height of the separation chamber.
a vertically movable supply chimney 21 is arranged in the cylinder 13 and surrounds the rod 15. Around its upper circumference, the chimney 21 is provided with several bolts 22, which protrude through slots 23 in the cylinder 13, and which carry nuts 24, by means of which the chimney can be fixed in the desired position.
The tangential air intake 2 can be partially or totally closed by a shutter, consisting of a substantially semi-circular plate 25 adapted to slide in guide channels 26.
During operation, the material to be graded is supplied through the chimney 21 and slides along the outer conical surface of the material distributor 10 at a speed determined by the clearance between the upper end of the distributor. material 10 and the lower end of the chimney 21, which play is adjusted by placing the chimney 21 as explained above. The material then falls into the separation chamber, in the form of an annular curtain, through the clearance between the material distributor 10 and the sleeve 12. Air enters through the inlet 2 and is rotated. inside the housing 1.
As the rotation continues, air then enters the separation chamber from where it flows through outlet 5. The material to be classified is entrained by the rotational movement of air in the separation chamber. The fine material is carried by the air stream towards the center of the separation chamber and can be collected in the air which flows through line 7, while the raw material is rejected towards the circumference of the separation chamber. separation by centrifugal force, and falls into the lower part 3 of the closing device, from where it can be delivered through opening 4 The tangential velocity component * of the air in the separation chamber is regulated by closing the 'air intake by means of the shutter 25,
while its radial velocity component is determined by the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
height of the separation chamber which is set known as indicated above. This combination of adjustments makes it possible to reach a precise fractionation limit for a very wide range of particles of different sizes, the components of the radial and tangential velocities being able to be modified within wide limits $ which makes it possible to adjust the working conditions of the room of separa-

tion 'to corri-enlr to the kind of matter' ira'itéa ea for ut; 3, -i.a an, besides, the classeur.de in the most efficient way for the matter considered.
The following explanation will help to understand it-
A particle that is in the separation chamber is subjected to the effects of two opposing forces. One of them is directed radially outwards and is a function of the tangential speed of the gas, of the radius. of rotation, diameter, and specific gravity of the particle. The other force is directed radially inward and results from the friction of the gas on the surface of the particle. It is a function of the radial speed of the gas flow, of the diameter of the particle, of the specific weight of the. gas, and a resistance coefficient which is, at its tolu, a function of the Reynolds number and the kinematic viscosity of the gas.
The two forces can be expressed by the following equations
EMI5.2
in which
C is the radial force directed outwards
D is the diameter of the particle @ is the specific gravity of the particle
Vtest the tangent velocity such as gas
R is the radius of rotation (radius of the separation chamber)
Fx is the force directed radially outward is the specific gravity of the gas
Vr is the radial speed of the gas
Cx is a resistance coefficient g is the gravitational constant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
For a given gas flow rate, V t is a function of the gas inlet and Vr is a function of the height of the separaio chamber.
If C FX D can be obtained provided that the values of the other variables are known. A particle of diameter D determined in this way will be in equilibrium (that is, it will rotate without moving either inward or outward), while larger particles will be rejected towards the exterior and that the finer particles will be carried inward by the gas stream. Thus, the diameter D is the fractionation limit under the conditions which prevail in the separation chamber.
By studying the equations above, we see that for a given particle in equilibrium (a certain fractionation limit) we can choose an arbitrary value for vT or VR and we can calculate the corresponding value of VR or VT. , in the case where a certain height of the chamber has been chosen, a corresponding width of the gas inlet can be calculated and adjusted. On the other hand, if a certain inlet width has been chosen, a corresponding separation chamber height can be calculated and set.
It can be seen from the foregoing that, if the height of the separation chamber is invariable, a predetermined fractionation limit can only be obtained with a defined value for the tangential air speed (inlet width of air). On the other hand, if the width of the air inlet is / variable, a predetermined fractionation limit can only be achieved with a defined radial air speed (separation chamber height). Therefore, in both cases, the classification operation is reduced to a defined Value for the gas velocity @ and radial components to achieve a certain fractionation limit.
On the other hand, if in accordance with the present invention the width of the gas inlet and the height of the separation chamber can be varied, the desired limit of fractionation can be obtained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
for far limits of the radial and tagential air speeds on condition that these two variables are adjusted with respect to each other in accordance with the above equations.
This means that it is possible to choose the speed of the radial air or of the tangential air so that it suits the material to be treated and then to adjust the tangential or radiele speeds respectively so as to reach the desired limit of fractionation Thus it may be desirable, for certain types of material, for example, to subject the material to an intense centrifugal field. In this case, a high tangential air speed will be chosen, which will determine a high radial air speed corresponding to the tangential speed and the desired fractionation limit.
In addition, for certain types of material, it may be desirable to work with a large separation chamber height (if the material to be classified is bulky). In such a case, the fractionation limit can be obtained by adjusting the air inlet width to a corresponding value.
It appears from the above considerations that the combination of this invention allows for fine adjustment of a desired fractionation limit, at the same time taking into account the kind of material being processed, in a manner impossible to achieve in the field. case where only the tangential or radial air speed is variable. In addition, it is possible to choose, for each material, conditions such that the apparatus is used in the most efficient manner possible for said material by choosing the highest possible air speeds that the air can withstand. matter.
The embodiment of fig.3 is substantially similar to that described above with reference to the figs.
1 and 2 and similar components bear the same references. These organs do not require any repetition of description.
In this embodiment, the lower defining wall of the separation chamber, which is marked 9, is planar instead of being conical and, likewise, the flange II * of the sleeve 12 is planar. In addition, an electric motor 27 is arranged
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
in the air distributor 10 and it is carried by a support 28 disposed in the air distributor. A disc 30, provided with blades 31, is fixed to the shaft 29. These blades will impart to the material which falls between the distributor 10 and the sleeve 12 a tangential speed component which is substantially equal to the tangential speed component of the current. air when the shutter 25 is in the medina position.
The efficiency of the fractionation will thus be improved, as explained above. In this embodiment, the material distributor is rigidly attached to the sleeve 12 by means of the spacers 18 'which, in this case, are tubular.
Air will be drawn through these by the blades 31 to cool the motor 27. Otherwise, the function of this embodiment is in all respects similar to that which has been described above with reference to. figs. 1 and 2.
Although specific embodiments and details have been illustrated and described, the invention is not limited thereto, as many modifications and variations can be made therein evident to those skilled in the art. art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
