La figure 1 est une coupe axiale de la partie supérieure de l'ou- til ;
La figure la est une coupe axiale de la partie inférieure de 1' outil;
La figure 2 est une coupe suivant la ligne 2-2 de la figure 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to an impact tool capable of delivering a single impact or percussion, or successive impacts with time intervals set between each impact and a controlled impact power, unlike force-operated perforators, hammers and the like. of power, which are driven pneumatically, electrically or by an explosive charge, and which provide a series of shocks. - rapids with the same power or the same intensity.
The main object of the present invention is to provide an impact tool of the above type, the operation of which is efficient and safe and which is capable of providing a shock of a regulated intensity, and to provide a tool which operates using of a gaseous, solid or liquid fuel and which can be easily handled by the operator in places of difficult access.
The invention more particularly proposes to provide a cutting tool suitable for the size of branches and for similar operations, and to provide a cutting tool having little: Recoil, thus preventing the operator from being unbalanced.
Other advantages and construction features will emerge from the description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an axial section of the upper part of the tool;
Figure la is an axial section of the lower part of the tool;
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a diagram of the ignition system
According to the present invention, the impact tool comprises a cylinder having at one of its ends one or more vents, and inside which there is a piston which is suitably connected to a working instrument such as a cutting tool.
A spring or similar resilient device acts on the piston so as to bias it towards the closed opposite end of the cylinder and to hold it normally at or near said opposite end. , intended for a suitable fuel, is carried by the tool and can be in the form of a vacuum cleaner or the like for gaseous fuels, or of an ejector or carburetor for liquid fuels, but in all cases the distributor can be provided customary adjustments to ensure the admission of an explosive charge into the cylinder, and to be associated with the valve for discharging waste gases from the cylinder in response to the return movement of the piston.
In addition, a suitable ignition device, such as a conventional spark plug, can also be provided at the 'closed' end of the cylinder, together with a suitable ignition cable and ignition switch. control operated manually or automatically.
To the piston or to the piston rod is attached a retaining device or other device intended to retract the piston against the action of the spring, from its position at the closed end of the cylinder to an intermediate position, and a device works in conjunction with the return device to actuate the fuel distributor so that as the piston moves from its normal position to its mid-position, it draws an explosive charge into the cylinder which is then drawn into the cylinder. can

vary according to the movement or displacement of the piston.
The ignition device can be actuated automatically or manually to detonate the charge, the piston then being forced towards the opposite end of the cylinder, thus causing the operation of the instrument connected to the piston or the piston rod.
At the end of the explosion cycle, the piston is returned by the spring and the waste gases are evacuated. In the case where, if preferred, the operation of the tool is controlled by a manually operated element, the construction and arrangement of the parts are such as the return device, the fuel dispenser and the control device. The ignition are successively actuated, the spring then becoming effective to return the piston to its normal position for the next cycle of operation.
The working instrument associated with the piston can be of any type requiring either a single shock, or successive shocks with a set time interval between each shock, or shocks of different intensity.
Therefore, the invention is not only useful for various cutting and shearing operations, but also as a hammer, nail set, tool, mater, etc., which usually require either a single shock or a directed blow. precisely, or successive shocks with a time interval set between each of them.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which shows a tool designed to be applied to pruning branches and the like, 1 denotes a cylinder having, near its lower or outer end, exhaust ports 2 and a closure 4 with a central orifice 5 and a series of peripherally spaced vents 6. The inner end of the cylinder is provided with a head 8 having a coaxial sleeve 10 extending towards the end. outside, and inside the cylinder 1 is a piston 11 provided with a rigid tubular piston rod 12, the outer end of which protrudes through the orifice 5.
On the head 8 is mounted a fuel distributor 14 which may be a conventional carburetor provided with a valve 15 which is normally kept closed by a small spring 16 having low coercive power, but which opens easily in response to the pressure. suction created by the movement of the piston 11 outwards. The carburetor 14 is connected by a pipe 17 to a fuel tank T connected on the outer side of the cylinder, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. A conventional spark plug 18 is carried by the head 8, and a valve 20. spring loaded, located between the spark plug and the carburetor, is held open by a swing arm 21 (Figures 1 and 2) when the piston is in its innermost position, as explained more fully below. -after.
One end of an operating lever 24 is pivotally mounted on a bracket 25 fixed to the internal end of cylinder 1, and the central part of this arm is arched to receive the sleeve 100 in the vicinity of its pivot connection, the lever 24 supports a resilient conductor 26, in the form of an inverted L (figure 1) carrying a contact 27 A clamp terminal 28 is connected to the conductor 26, and these parts are suitably isolated from the lever 24 .
A second clamping terminal 30, carried by a bracket 31 fixed to cylinder 1, is connected to a fixed contact 32, the clamping terminal and the contact both being isolated from the console 310 A conductor connects the clamping terminal of the spark plug ignition 18 to the high voltage side of a Rhumkorff coil 33 with a vibrating contact, and other conductors connect clamp terminals 28 and 30 in series with the vibrating contact, on the low voltage side of the coil d Rhumkorff,

as shown in figure 4.
Lever 24 carries a stud 34 capable of engaging the underside of swing arm 21 as it approaches its return position (shown by solid lines in Figure 1) so that stud 34 oscillates the swing arm 21 in the dextrorsal direction to keep the valve 20 open, but when the lever 24 swings a few degrees in the dextrorsum direction, the pin 34 disengages from the swing arm 21 and allows the spring 35 to close the valve 20 , and when the lever 24 oscillates to its lowest position, the contact 27 engages with the contact 32 to close the circuit of the spark plug 18 so as to ignite the explosive charge in the cylinder.
In order to ensure easy handling of the lever 24, a projecting handle 36 is provided.
A return device 40 (Figure 1) is attached to piston 11, and its outer end protrudes through one of the vents 6 and has a V-shaped recess which provides a ratchet tooth 42.
One end of an L-shaped locking arm 44 pivots on the end of lever 24, and the other end of this arm extends inward toward the return device and has a tooth 45 which provides a pawl capable of coming into engagement with the ratchet tooth 42, the construction and the arrangement of the parts being such that a movement of the lever in the dextrorsum direction is capable of returning the piston 11 from its position. position of return to an intermediate or ignition position (represented by maximum lines in figure 1), but movement of the lever in the sinistrorsum direction has no effect on the piston.
On the outer end of the cylinder 1 are mounted spaced guides 48 (Figures 1 and 2) between which the lower part of the arm 44 slides, and a retaining pin 50, carried by these guides, protrudes through a slot 52 formed in the arm 44 to prevent the latter from accidentally swinging out of the operating position. The lower edge of the arm 44 below the slot 52 is recessed to provide a cam surface 54 capable of engaging a stud 55 mounted in one of a series of spaced aligned holes 56 formed. in guides 48.
As lever 24 swings in the dextrorsum direction, the recessed edge of arm 44 bears over stud 55 until it engages cam surface 54, with arm 44 then swinging outward a distance. sufficient to disengage the pawl 45 from the ratchet tooth 42, thus stopping further movement of the piston 11. By varying the position of the pin 55, the movement of the piston and hence the amount of explosive charge can be varied. sucked into the cylinder and the intensity of the shock produced by the explosion. A tension spring 58, one end of which is fixed to arm 44 and the other to a stud carried by cylinder 1, not only maintains the parts in the active position, but also causes a return movement. lever 24.
In the sleeve 10 and in the piston rod 12 is slidably mounted a pin or piston 60, one end of which projects outwardly beyond the sleeve and the other end extends beyond the cylinder. 1. A tubular housing 62, rigidly connected to sleeve 10, encloses the inner end of the spindle and provides a handle by which the tool is handled.
Attached to the inner end of the pin 60 is an adjustable washer carrying an elastic collar 64 which provides a buffer or stopper capable of engaging an annular shoulder 65 formed on the inner end of the housing 62, the through- ties being firmly fixed to the end of the spindle by locking nuts 660
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The inner end of a tubular housing 70 (Figure 1) is screwed into port 5, and its inner surface is precisely reamed or machined to provide a guide for the piston rod 12. link or stopper 72 is secured by a stud or other suitable fashion to pin 60, and is normally held in engagement with the end of the piston rod, as explained below.
The outer end of the housing 70 carries a guide pad 74 (Figure la) which slidably supports the outer end of the pin 600.
One end of a compression spring 76, wound around the pin 60, acts against the collar 72, and its other end acts against the guide pad'74, the spring 76 having just enough power to move the piston 11. to its innermost or return position.
A second compression spring 78 surrounded the spring 76 and the collar 72 while being disposed at a distance from them, one of its ends acting directly against the end of the piston rod and its opposite end against the buffer 74, the spring 76 also having just sufficient power to cause the piston to return independently of the spring 76 in the event that the spindle is held in the forward position.
At the internal end of the housing 70 is fixed a protective sheath 80 (FIG. 1) which receives the return device; this sheath has a longitudinal slot 81 intended to receive the end of the arm 44. On the outer end of the housing 70 is mounted a J-shaped element 84 (figure la) having a guide slot 85 extending lengthwise. finally, which receives one of the edges of a knife C rigidly attached to the end of the spindle 60. The curved end 86 of the element 84 is also slit to receive the cutting edge of the knife, and this ex - end provides a work support similar to an anvil against which the knife acts.
As shown here, the end 86 supports or engages a branch B to be severed, but it is obvious that the particular size and shape of the support 86 is governed by the material on which the tool is working.
The following is a summary of how the impact tool works:
Assuming that stud 55 is properly seated to provide the desired displacement of the piston, the ignition system and carburetor are properly connected, and parts are arranged as shown by the solid lines. Figures 1 and 1a, with a branch B to be cut located in the support 86, a movement of the handle 36 in the dextrorsum direction causes the action of the locking arm 44 on the return device 40 so as to move the piston away from the head 8, the initial movement of the lever 24 causing the release of the pin 34 of the swing arm 21, so that the valve 20 closes under the influence of the spring 35.
As the piston 12 moves away from the head 8, it not only advances the spindle and knife relative to the work support 86, but it also draws an explosive mixture from the carburetor 14. , since the spring 16 is not strong enough to prevent the valve 15 from opening in response to the suction created by the piston.
As the piston approaches the intermediate or ignition position (substantially midway between the ends of the cylinder) the cam surface 54 engages the stud 55, thereby disengaging the pawl and ratchet connection 42, 45, and stopping further movement of the piston. At this moment, a pre-determined explosive charge has been drawn into the cylinder, and the valve 15 closes under the influence.

spring 16.
Further movement of handle 36 brings contacts 27 and 32 together, the explosive charge then being ignited and the piston forced downward, bringing pin 60 and knife C outwardly against the action. return spring 76 and 78 until pad 64 engages shoulder 65 which limits further movement of the spindle. When the piston reaches its position furthest from the head 8; the mass of the exploded charge is emptied through the orifices 2, and by releasing the handle 36 the lever 24 oscillates towards

The impact of the knife C on the branch B is usually sufficient to sever it, the springs 76 and 78 then operating to cause the return movement of the piston, the spindle and the knife. While valve 20 is now open, the waste gases are vented and all parts are returned to their original position for another cycle of operation.
In the event that the knife C fails to cut the branch B and gets stuck, the spring 78 salt performs the return movement of the piston, but the spring 76 cannot perform the return of the pin 60, in which case the collar 72 is kept out of the end of the piston, a distance equal to the displacement of the piston from its intermediate position However, all other parts are put in place for another cycle of operation, and by swinging the handle in the direction dextrorsum, a second explosion occurs from which the end of the piston rod strikes the collar 72 so as to complete the severing of the branch B, after which the return movement of all the parts is carried out as described above
Because, as shown here,
the book support 86 is attached to the housing 70, the recoil that would otherwise exist is minimized and, as a result, the operator is not unbalanced. Furthermore, not only does the elastic buffer 64 limit the travel of the spindle, but it only comes into operation after complete sectioning in order to absorb the shock. In this regard, it is observed that the pad 64 is adjustable on the end of the spindle, and by removing the housing 62 the correct adjustment can be quickly made so as to ensure efficient and uniform operation. Another feature of the invention resides in the fact that the adjustable stud 55 is provided which can be put in position at will to vary the displacement of the piston and, consequently, the intensity of the shock produced by the pin.
Naturally, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown and is capable of receiving various variants falling within the scope and spirit of the invention.
