EMI4.11
auto-lubrifice .dans un dispositif Ghermoplastique injectable.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Day.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to a nozzle for a syringe, and more particularly to a nozzle for a syringe which is self-lubricating.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a nozzle for a syringe, which is self-lubricating. Another object of the invention is to provide a nozzle for a syringe constructed of an extrudable thermoplastic material to which one has. mixed a quantity of mineral oil sufficient to have a continuous exudation. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device

molded thermoplastic having a self-lubricating outer surface. Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view of a removable injector bag equipped with the self-lubricating nozzle according to the invention.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a removable injector bag constructed of a flexible, transparent plastic material, such as polyvinylchloride. The portion of the bag 10 which contains the liquid is a closed envelope, of rectangular shape designated by the reference numeral 11. This envelope 11 is filled with a suitable injection fluid, such as a phosphate solution. The envelope 11 is provided with a segment of flexible plastic tube 12 communicating with the interior and fixed to the bag, for example by heat-sealing.
-'- '' Fluid escape from the casing 11 through the tube 12 is controlled by a ball stop valve 13 mounted in the tube 12 inside the casing 11.
The loose end of tube 12 is provided with a nozzle 14 which is constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. When the nozzle 14 is not working, it is carried in a notch or groove 15 provided in the casing 11.
To construct the nozzle 14, a resinous substance such as polyvinyl chloride is mixed with an appropriate amount of mineral oil, the

ingredients while they are U1.léJ.il6fjs, an extrusion of the i-mixture, the extruded rod of the y-tils or "pellets" is processed and then an injection molding method is used to form the Guyere 1. .
Heretofore, one of the processes used has been to add a small amount of mineral oil to a resinous mixture to form a lubricant to aid extrusion and

molding. By adding a significantly larger amount ,. It has been found that mineral oil forms a lubricant for the outer surface of the molded device and continues to do so, despite continuous removal of the lubricant from the surface, for example by wiping it off.
A formula used for the manufacture of the self-lubricating nozzle according to the present invention is shown in Table I below:

The above formula is applied in the first case on the basis of parts by weight of the various ingredients employed. In the field of molded plastics a formula is conventionally written on the basis of 100 parts of resin.
It should be noted that the limits of mineral oil used,
EMI4.10
10 to 20 parts, or about 9 to $ 5, are appreciably larger than those previously employed in the lubricant retort in the process. For such a lubricant composition marl, mineral oil would only be added from about a quarter part to two parts based on 100 parts of the resin. To produce a self-lubricant, it is necessary that a sufficient amount be incorporated so that the mineral oil "bleeds" considerably on standing.
About 10 parts are required to give a visible bleeding and this should be considered the minimum amount to be employed in order to form an outer surface.
EMI4.11
self-lubricating. in an injectable thermoplastic device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The. upper limit of the amount of mineral oil to be incorporated is set by the maximum amount of oil that can be incorporated into the formula without the mixing being slippery enough so that it does not occur. It has been found that this amount is about 20 parts of mineral oil per 100 parts by weight of resin.
The actual manufacturing process for preparing the self-lubricating syringe nozzle 14 described above involves the following steps: first the resin is introduced into a mixer such as the J.H. Day ribbon mixer. Then all the ingredients except mineral oil are mixed in a boiler heated to about 150-200 F. These ingredients are then pumped or slowly poured into the blender while the Mixing continues to be made. The ingredients in the blender continue to be heated to approximately 180-200 F. While mixing continues, the required amount of mineral oil is added and the temperature of the mixed ingredients is reduced to approximately 100-120 F.
The completed mixture as described above is then conveyed to a single screw extruder and the oily mixture is fed into the extruder by alternately filling the hopper opening with the angel and then forcing it into the extruder. by means of a wooden piston. The slippery state of the mixture prevents it from entering the extruder in the conventional manner used with dry grain mixes. The plastic material exits the extruder through a single opening
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
¯ in the form of a rod. However, multiple openings can also be employed.
The rod is then made into "pellets" in a Ball and Jewell mill and the pellets are then sent to an injection molding machine where they are molded in the form of the syringe nozzles described above.
The foregoing description has been given only for the clarity and understanding of the invention, and one should not infer unnecessary limitations on the scope of the invention.
