<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Methods and devices are known for bending tubes consisting in applying a punch of suitable shape against the region of the tube which is desired to be bent, which is held by stops, or even by a die intended to conform the. outer region of the obtained hanger. In some of these processes, the punch, especially in the case where a die is not used, must have a shape suitable for the tube and applying to the length of tube which is desired to be bent. Under these conditions, according to ''

diameter of the tubes, e'- l XGiva1iô l'iï .: yortw2ee cie the ü: ale of bending, which can reach lt0, it is necessary to use different punches. Such punches are quite expensive to manufacture.
In order to avoid the manufacture, in each particular case, of a special punch intended for the work to be performed, the present application relates to a universal punch, designed so as to allow the bending of tubes of different diameters, along radii. of different bends.
The so-called "universal punch II obj and the invention consists essentially of a frame in which grooves radiating from a common center are provided and in which a set of blades is engaged, which are easy to perform in series and notched to the desired profile, these blades coming to rest against the tube to ensure the bending. By varying the degree of depression of the blades in the grooves, the punch is adapted to the bending angle that l 'we want to give to the tube.
The following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings given by way of example, will give a better understanding of the way in which the invention can be carried out.
The fig.l shows in plan one of the grooved flanges -du punch.
Fig. 2 shows, in plan, the covering plates which are applied against the fiasses.
Figt3 represents a diametral section of the punch.
Fig.4 shows a plan of the mounted punch, in position to bend a tube.
The punch consists of an essentially

consisting of two flanges, such as a fig.1, in which grooves b1, b2 etc ..... radiating in a fan from a common center are formed, These flanges a are mounted as seen in fig. 3 on a common base c and, on either side of the flanges a, are applied covering parts d, e (fig. 2) which will prevent lateral sliding, out of the grooves b1, b2 etc ..., of the blades introduced into these grooves.
The assembly which has just been described, with the exception of the blades f, is used for a whole set of various bends ...
When it comes to bending a tube of determined diameter, a set of blades is made [bearing notches g, largely overhollowed in h, and adapted to the diameter of the tube to be treated 1. The execution of these blades f is relatively easy and economical, because it suffices to stack several of them and to indent them simultaneously, to obtain the set of blades necessary for the operation.
Depending on the radius and the angle of the final bend that one wishes to obtain, either for example 60, 90 or 1200 or any other value, the blades f are more or less sunk into the grooves b1, b2 for this purpose, we has, in the bottom of the grooves b, a set of wedges k1, k2, etc ... of suitable length, and which provide, as can be seen in fig. 3 and 4, * a support on the internal edge 1 of each blade f, so that it, depending on the bending radius to be obtained, comes out more or less from the groove 'b @
When the punch is mounted, the blades are
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
present as has been shown in FIG. 4L The tube i to be treated, which can be suitably heated, is. supported for example by two rollers m1, m2, integral with a fixed frame n.
The blades f from the center then come to rest against the tube 1 at the start, as shown in solid lines in the figure, then the punch is moved in the direction of arrow A, so as to cause the tube to bend. 1 held by pebbles m1, m2. For example, we obtain at the end of the race the. 90 ° bent position of the tube shown in phantom in Figure 4.
Preference is given, preferably on the edge of the blades f, to cleats o which project beyond the covering plate e, as can be seen in FIG. 4. In this way, after the bending operation, the blades f which have bent the tube and which could get stuck on the tube i, are held by the stops o, during the movement of the punch in the opposite direction of the arrow A , and, consequently, cannot come out of the grooves b1, b2, The punch is ready for the next operation, with another portion of tube, without having to replace the blades, ..
It goes without saying that modifications of detail could be made to the realization of this invention without departing from its scope, and that the spacing between the blades f may vary according to the nature of the metal treated.
