<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
'La baguette consiste en deux parties :une âme 1 et un enrobage qui est composé de deux couches 2 et 3. Il pourrait cependant y avoir plusieurs enrobages ou qu'un enrobage unique.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
C max 0,10 %
Si max 0,10 %
Mn max 0,5 %
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

It has long been known that rods packed with flux can be used for soldering. For example, in normal arc welding, tubular electrodes are used in the core of which substances are introduced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
determined whose main purpose is to obtain metallurgical reactions in the weld. These substances introduced into the core of the electrodes consist mainly of pulverulent substances such as alloy powders which serve to alloy the solder material and which, moreover, act in the direction of improving the weldability by alternating current.
It is also known practice to coat the surface of the solder or filler rod with a thin layer of copper.
Such layers are generally very thin and are only intended to protect the filler rod against rusting and to facilitate the passage of the solder current between the current lead and the rod.
Recently it has also been proposed to use filler rods for arc welding in a protective atmosphere having the shape of a cable, the wire being in the middle of the cable having a chemical composition different from that of the wires surrounding this central wire. Such electrodes are mainly used for welding non-ferrous metals. The object of this arrangement of the wires is that it is possible to obtain in the insert weld alloys which are only with difficulty or even not at all workable into a homogeneous rod.
In the arc welding of steel under a protective atmosphere with a melting electrode, certain difficulties arise because the surface tension of the material of the melted rod is relatively high. This. results in the passage of molten material from the electrode to the base material in the form of relatively large drops. This phenomenon leads, in an arc welding, to an instability of the aro, which on the one hand complicates the work and on the other hand.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
makes it impossible to use alternating current.
In order to obtain a better passage of the drops, for example, in arc welding in a protective atmosphere, low percentages of oxygen are added to the shielding gas. The results thus obtained are not entirely satisfactory given that the oxygen contained in the shielding gas causes certain metallurgical reactions which can have a detrimental influence on the quality of the weld. By the combustion of carbon and the production of carbon dioxide, pores can be formed in the weld bead. The carbon content of the rod must therefore be very low and the added oxygen content must to a large extent be adjusted to the quality of the steel to be welded.
The present invention aims to remedy all these drawbacks. It relates to a rod for welding metals in a protective atmosphere, in particular for welding steel. This strip is made up of two parts, ie a metal core and at least one metal coating. It is characterized in that one of the parts comprises at least one addition to lower the surface tension of this part and the other part at least one addition to improve the metallurgical properties of the weld, so as to avoid transformation. chemical between these additions.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, a longitudinal section through an embodiment of the stick according to the invention.
The rod consists of two parts: a core 1 and a coating which is composed of two layers 2 and 3. However, there could be several coatings or only a single coating.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The diameter of the core has a suitable dimension of 3 / 10th to 8 / 10th of the total diameter.
One of said parts comprises an additional agent for lowering the surface tension, for example, iron oxide, so that the melting takes place much more evenly and in small drops. In addition, it is advantageously possible to dispense with adding oxygen to the shielding gas. Low carbon carbon steel contains enough iron oxide in itself that it can suitably form one of the parts of the rod directly.
The other part comprises an additional agent for improving the metallurgical properties of the weld, for example, a determined content of silicon and manganese.
It emerges from the foregoing that by introducing the two additional agents into different parts of the rod, it is possible to prevent, at least for the most part, a reaction of these components with each other. Thus each of these additional agents leads to the desired effect and it is possible to obtain a weld of irreproachable quality and without pores. Moreover, by using such a rod one can produce a stable arc which is constant in both directions of the current.
For the welding of steel with an electrode melting continuously under a shielding gas, the following arrangement of the core and the cover has been found to be satisfactory:
The core, which in this case has the additional agent for reducing the surface tension, can be made of a carbon steel with:
C max 0.10%
If max 0.10%
Mn max 0.5%
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Good results have been obtained with a same containing 0.05% carbon, 0.010% silicon and 0.36% manganese.
In this last composition of the core, good results have been obtained for welding in a protective atmosphere using the following coating which contains the additional agent improving the welding properties:
C 0.11%
If 1.1%
Mn 1.6%
With a rod thus placed, the following composition, given by way of example, of the deposited weld was obtained:
C 0.08%
Si 0.45%
Mn 0.95% In the two cases mentioned above, the core may also contain small amounts of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, titanium, zirconium, aluminum, copper, wolframe, vanadium, niobium or tantalum.
The content of the metals mentioned is advantageously at most 1% in the core.
In a rod which, for example, consists of a core and only a coating, the following composition of the coating material has been found to be good in the rule, for welding in a protective atmosphere of carbon steel or steel. 'structural steel with a low content of alloyed elements, this material comprising in this case the additional agent for improving the welding properties:
C 0.5-0.20%
Si 0.6-2%
Mn 0.5-2.5%
If it is desired to obtain in the solder material greater contents of silicon or other elements, it is advisable to add two or more coatings on the core, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
first coating mainly comprising the required manganese content while the other coatings include the necessary silicon content as well as possibly still other alloying elements.
In principle, any alloying element can still be added to the coatings formed on the core without there being any significant changes in the melting process.
The rod can, however, also be produced in such a way that the core contains certain alloying elements while one of the coatings consists of a carbon steel with maximum content of carbon, silicon and manganese according to the chemical composition. mentioned above for the soul. This arrangement has certain advantages above all for thin welding rods.
