On filtre ensuite
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a process making it possible to obtain valuable and novel carboxylamide derivatives of azo dyes, said process being characterized in that one reacts with mono-amino-pyrenes free of aquasolubilizing groups of carboxylic acid halides which are free from water-solubilizing groups and have the formula
EMI1.1
in which R represents an aromatic residue of the benzene or naphthalene series, R aromatic residues of the benzene or naphthalene series in which the azo groups are located in position 1,4 with respect to each other, R a naphthalene residue in which the azo group, the hydroxyl and the chloride group of carboxylic acid are located in position 1,2,
3 relative to 11 each other, and n represents an integer with a value at most equal to 20
In the present process, starting materials free of water-solubilizing groups such as sulfonic groups, sulfonamide groups and -COOH groups should be used. '
As the final component, a 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid is used which, if desired, may be substituted in the benzene ring free of carboxylic groups, for example by a halogen atom, an alkoxy group or an alkyl group. however advantageously uses, thanks to its easy accessibility, unsubstituted 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid.
The azocarboxylic acids obtained are treated with agents capable of transforming the carboxylic acids into their halides, for example into their chlorides or their bromides, thus in particular with phosphorus halides such as phosphorus pentabromide or phosphorus trichloride or pentachloride. of phosphorus, with oxyhalides of phosphorus and preferably with thionyleo chloride
The treatment with acid halogenating agents of this kind is advantageously carried out in indifferent organic solvents, such as chlorobenzenes, for example mono- or dichlorobenzene, toluene, xylene or nitrobenzene.
When preparing the carboxylic acid halides, it is generally advantageous to first dry the azo compounds prepared in aqueous medium or to free them in water by azeotropic boiling in an organic solvent. This azoetropic drying can, if it be done, desires, 'to be carried out directly before the treatment with the acid halogenating agents.
The new dyes obtained by the present process correspond to the general formula

in which R, R2, R and n have the meaning indicated and "Pyr" represents a Pyrenean residue. They constitute precious pigments of blue to burgundy color which are characterized by a particularly high coloring intensity and which are remarkably suitable for dyeing decomposed polyvinyls, for example to be incorporated by rolling into polyvinyl sheets, and they are characterized by a particularly good solidity to light and migration and, in addition, by temperature stability and solvent fastness.
It is also valuable for what is called pigment printing, that is to say for printing processes which consist in fixing the pigments, using suitable adhesives such as casein, substances curable synthetics, including urea- or melamine-formaldehyde condensation products, solutions or emulsions of polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate, or other emulsions (for example oil-in-water emulsions or water-in-oil emulsions), on a substrate, in particular on a textile fiber, but also on other flat objects such as paper (for example wallpapers) or glass fiber fabrics. pigments obtained according to the present process can also render good services for other purposes of use,
for example in finely divided form for dyeing rayon and viscose, or for dyeing cellulose ethers and esters or superpolyamides or superpolyurethanes in the spinning mass, as well as for the preparation of varnishes tinted or varnish formers, solutions and products of acetylcellulose, nitrocellulose, natural or synthetic resins, such as polymerization or condensation resins, for example aminoplasts, phenolplasts, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyacryl, rubber, casein, silicones and silicone resins. They can also be used with advantage in the preparation of colored pencils, cosmetic preparations or laminated plates.
Preparations containing such pigments in finely divided form can be obtained, in a manner known per se, by intensive mechanical treatment, for example on rolling mills or in suitable kneading apparatus. medium permitting the dispersive and intensive treatment depending on the intended purpose, for example by using for obtaining dispersible aqueous preparations the residual sulphite cellulose liquor or salts of naphthylmethane-disulphonic acid and, for 'obtaining rayon-acetate spinning preparations, acetylcellulose mixed with little solvent.
Owing to the particularly favorable physical form in which the products are, most of the time, obtained according to the present invention, and owing to their chemical indifference and their good light fastness, these products can normally be easily distributed. in the masses or preparations of the kind indicated, and this advantageously in an instant, because these masses and preparations do not yet have their final shape. The measures necessary to give the shape, for example, spinning, pressing, hardening, casting, bonding, and the like, can then also be carried out without others in the presence of the present pigments, without hindering possible chemical reactions of the substratum such as, for example, other polymerizations, condensations, etc.
The invention is described in more detail in the non-limiting examples which follow. In these examples, and unless otherwise indicated, the parts and percentages are by weight and the temperatures are indicated in degrees centigrade.

Example 1
By distilling off 50 parts by volume of the solvent, a mixture of 50.9 parts of the disazo dye carboxylic acid obtained by coupling diazotized 1-amino-2., 5-dichlorobenzene is completely dehydrated. with 1-amino-5-methyl-2-methoxybenzene, again diazotizing the amino-monoazo dye thus obtained and coupling it with 2,3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, and 500 parts by volume of chlorobenzene .We add to the cold mixture 0,
8 part by volume of dimethylformamide and 142 parts by volume of thionyl chloride, then heat for one hour at 130-140. Allowed to cool, the dye chloride precipitated in coarse crystalline needles separated by filtration, washed with a little cold chlorobenzene, then with petroleum ether, and vacuum dried at room temperature. The chloride is a dark crystalline powder with a golden bronze surface.
A mixture of 52.75 parts of this chloride, 22.8 parts of 3-aminopyrene, 1750 parts by volume of chlorobenzene and 8 parts by volume of pyridine is heated for 16 hours at 130-140. The pigment, which consists of small, curved, thin needles, is then hot filtered and purified by washing it with boiling chlorobenzene, boiling alcohol and boiling water. After drying under vacuum at 50- 60, the pigment is in the form of a purple powder, in soft grains, it is absolutely insoluble in boiling chlorobenzene or in boiling dimethylformamide, and dyes the polyvinyl chloride a very intense purple shade of very good resistance to migration and light.
If 1-amino-2,5-dimethylbenzene is used as the middle component of the starting dye instead of 1-amino-5-methyl-2-methoxy-benzene, then the procedure indicated a pigment dyeing a sheet of polyvinyl chloride to a shade of red-violet, having good lightfastness.
If 1-amino-2,5-diethoxybenzene is used as the middle component of the starting dye, then a pigment dyeing a polyvinyl chloride sheet to a blue shade is obtained which also has very good fastness properties. .
If one uses, in the second paragraph, instead of 3-amino-pyrene, 3-acetylamino-8-amino-pyrene, a pigment is obtained which colors the polyvinylchloride sheet in shades of one. purple pulling a little red.

A mixture of 15.1 parts of the dicarboxylic acid of disazoic dye which can be prepared by coupling 1-amino-2-chlorobenzene acid is heated for 15 minutes at 130-140. 5-carboxylic diazotized with 1-amino-2,5-dimethylbenzene, again diazotizing the amino-monoazo dye thus obtained and coupling it with 2,3-hydro-xynaphthoic acid, of 350 parts by volume of chlorobenzene, 2.4 parts by volume of dimethylformamide and 14.2 parts by volume of thionyleo chloride After cooling, the dye chloride consisting of small purple acicular druses is separated by filtration, washed with a little cold chlorobenzene, then with petroleum ether,
and dried in vacuo at room temperature.
15.8 parts of this chloride are heated for 16 hours at 130-140, mixed with 14.3 parts of 3-amino-pyrene, 5 parts by volume of pyridine and 400 parts by volume of chlorobenzene.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the poorly soluble pigment is hot and washed with boiling chlorobenzene, boiling alcohol and boiling water. When dried, it forms a purple powder, in soft grains, which is absolutely insoluble in chlorine. boiling obenzene or in boiling dimethyl formamide. The pigment dyes polyvinyl chloride in a very intense violet-red shade, with very good fastness to migration and to light.
The following table indicates other pigments which can be obtained, as shown in this example, by coupling the diazo compound of the amine indicated in column I with the mediating component indicated in column II, by diazotizing the amine. amino-azo dye thus obtained, by coupling it with 2,3-hydroxynaphthic acid and by reacting with 3-aminopyrene the chloride of the dicarboxylic acid of di s-azo dye which is then obtained. Column III indicates the shade of the dye obtained with the pigment on polyvinyl chloride.

Example 3
65 parts of polyvinyl chloride, 35 parts of dioctyl phthalate and 0.2 part of the dye obtained according to Example 1 are stirred together,
then process the whole for 7 minutes at 1400 on a calender with two rollers. A sheet colored in violet is obtained, with very good fastness to light and to migration.
