Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing polychrome plastic articles, such as household or other trays, signage or signage panels, advertising media, decorative coverings, etc.

   According to the usual processes for using plastics, by molding with polymerization, articles of this type are generally obtained only in one color.

  To give them a decoration, they must be tinted on the surface which represents a long and expensive work, the patterns remaining external and subject to deterioration by shocks, friction or any other cause
The object of the method according to the invention is to make it possible to obtain, in a convenient and rapid manner, such decorative effects which are unalterable.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   This process is characterized in that the designs with which the article is to be decorated are printed on a fibrous sheet permeable to the plastic material, this sheet bearing the prints is placed on a support layer which is covered with another layer of plastic material before hot compression to obtain polymerization.

   The fibrous sheet receiving the designs or decorations by printing can be an unsized blotting-type paper or, better, a usual fabric made from plant or artificial fibers. Preferably, a loose mesh fabric is used, which may be unfinished. In particular, a fabric of artificial fibers, such as rayon or the like, is suitable.

   The sheet thus formed is placed on the support layer, which can be a layer of plastic material or a layer of glass fiber. It is then covered with another layer of plastic. The whole is then subjected to polymerization. During this operation, the flowable plastic material impregnates the fibrous sheet and even passes through it to form one body with the support layer by entangling the decorated sheet. The drawings thereof, visible by transparency, are protected against any external action.

   For the application of the process, it is possible to use various plastics from the range of thermoplastics.

  However, the best results are obtained with resins of the polyester type. Such resins lend themselves well to joining the support layer with the layer subsequently affixed and with the decorated interlayer sheet, so as to constitute an indefinitely stable unit of good rigidity.

   By this process, the most varied decorative patterns are obtained without having to modify the conditions of processing of the plastic material and without special tools being necessary. This tooling consists of the presses

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   @ customary designed to ensure hot molding, at polymerization temperatures.

   The variety of designs and colors depends exclusively on the impressions of the fibrous interlayer sheet, these impressions being made separately and beforehand outside the actual manufacturing cycle of the articles to be produced.

   In other words, sheets of unsized paper or loose fabric with or without a finish are printed with a number of selected designs, in substantial quantities and at low cost. These sheets are stored so that they can only be used as and when required, entering the cycle of continuous undifferentiated manufacturing, and yet giving articles with different designs, which allows economical production. This method is significantly more economical than the individual coloring of articles after manufacture thereof.

   In carrying out the process, in order to provide the finished article with the luster and the quality of the printed designs, it is important to prevent air or vapor bubbles from being trapped in the resin, in particular in the resin. contact of the incorporated fibrous sheet. For this purpose, a fibrous sheet devoid of moisture is used and, if necessary, it is dried before its application to the resin support layer.

   On the other hand, it is sometimes advantageous to apply to the support layer, before laying the fibrous sheet provided with prints, a light layer of raw resin. This application can be carried out with a spray gun or with a brush. It is then on the raw resin layer that the fibrous sheet is placed which is impregnated with resin before receiving the upper coating layer.

   In order to give consistency to the article thus produced, it is often advantageous to provide reinforcing elements in the plastics support layer, of any suitable material. In particular, this reinforcement is produced by means of fiber

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 of glass suitably distributed in the mass of the support layer
The process makes it possible to obtain, at low cost, household items, such as trays, having numerous designs and achieving various decorative effects. It is applicable to the mass production of signage or advertising panels, light, unalterable, advantageously replacing the usual panels in painted or enamelled sheet.

   These various articles can, in addition to the decorative element incorporated, receive on the surface by molding or otherwise, various conformations, achieving complementary decorative or aesthetic effects. It is also possible to incorporate into the coating layer, locally or over its entire surface, accessory elements, in particular small glass balls giving original reflection effects.
