<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Cranes that travel on rails generally have one or two flange wheels mounted to rotate in side members of the crane frame. For small-reach cranes, where the ratio of reach to gearing may be small, the direction of the crane frame moving on the track is not a problem. However, for large-reach cranes it is very often necessary to place a high value on the ratio of reach to wheelbase. A large value of this ratio has an adverse effect on the displacement of wheel wheel crane frames. A very serious disadvantage is that the crane frame and rails are subjected to great stress when the cranes leave
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
straight track or when the track gauge varies.
Another disadvantage is that the frictional force is very high and the wear of the flanges of the wheels and the rails is very pronounced. Under adverse conditions, the crane frame may twist, the rails may bend, and the crane may derail. It has been proposed to employ a steering means connected to a means indicating the angle of the crane frame and the track and adjusting the crane translation apparatus so that the speed of one or more drive wheels is changed and the chassis takes a special angular position with respect to the track.
The translation wheels have flanges which limit the lateral displacement of the crane frame, because the steering means is only able to bring it back to a defined angular position relative to the track, but is unable to adjust its position when the chassis has moved sideways from its normal position relative to the track.
,
The present invention relates to a crane moving on rails, comprising one or more motors connected to translational drive wheels, arranged in side members of the crane frame, means indicating the lateral displacement of a point located at the part. front of the crane frame with respect to the crane track and steering means, connected to said indicating means and regulating the speed of the driving wheels of one or both ends of the crane frame, according to said lateral displacement, The indicator means are guided by one of the track rails or by a separate guide rail. Indicator means are preferably disposed on both sides of the axis of the crane frame, perpendicular to the track.
The steering means, connected to the front indicator, only affects the speed of the driving wheels when the crane is in translation. The indicating means may consist of forks or rollers, movably disposed in the crane frame, on one of the track rails or on the separate guide rail,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
These forks or rollers follow the rail and indicate the lateral movement of a point of the chassis, located above them and actuate the steering means which influence the speed of the driving wheels As only the steering means connected to the front indicator means influence the speed of the driving wheel, the crane is provided with an automatic reversing means which connects the steering means to the translation device when the translation begins.
The reversing means may consist of a contactor connected to the translation control lever or to a relay connected to a circuit of the motor device.
To correct the position of the crane frame relative to the crane track by changing the speed of the traveling drive wheels, the traveling apparatus can be influenced in many different ways. The directing means may consist of a rheostat, the movable contact of which is connected to the indicating means.
This rheostat can influence the current sent to the translation motors of the travel device. When a track motor is connected to the drive wheels at both ends of the crane frame by opposing shafts, the rheostat influences the speed and direction of rotation of a correction motor operating a correction device disposed between the track motor. track and one of the drive wheels. According to the direction of rotation of said correction motor, the speed of the wheel located on the side of the track motor where the correction apparatus is located is reduced or increased. It is also possible to make use of electrically actuated clutches, actuated by the steering means and located between the track motor and the driving wheels of the crane.
When track motors are used, one of which is located at each end of the track frame, it is possible to modify the field current of one or both motors or to interrupt the current supplying one of the motors during short periods.
The cranes according to the invention comprise devices for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
safety device preventing the crane frame from derailing if the electric steering gear is disturbed. The wheels can be provided with flanges which do not normally come into contact with the sides of the rails. It is also possible to use horizontal rollers which do not normally come into contact with the rails and which serve the same purpose. These guide rollers can be very simple, because they rarely have to regain strength.
The result of the invention is that the lateral force acting on the rails and the wheels is very low and, therefore, the wear resistance of the sides of the rail and the flanges of the wheels is also very low. Long-reach cranes can have a very small wheelbase without the crane twisting. By adjusting the sight of the driving wheels with the help of the steering means, influenced only by the front indicating means, a stabilizer-suitable feedback mechanism is easily realized, so that the crane frame always takes up quickly, regardless of the direction of translation, a well-defined angular and lateral position relative to the rail which guides the indicator member. If a separate guide rail is used, an easily adjustable rail guides the translation of the crane frame.
It is not necessary to adjust the wheel rails with great precision, since small bends or small differences in spacing do not compromise the translation of the frame. In addition, it is possible to steer the crane frame in a slightly curved track.
The accompanying drawings show the invention applied to a crane mobile on overhead rails, that is to say to a traveling bridge.

separate for the driving wheels.
Figure 3 is a section on C-C of Figures 1 and 2, showing means for indicating the position of a point on the front of a bridge frame relative to a rail.
In Figure 1, there is shown a crane frame having two main side members 2, and carried by cross members 3 and 4. In each of the side members, there are two wheels 5 and 6 without flange and guide rollers 12 which do not are normally not in contact with the sides of the rails 20. The driving wheels 6 are connected to gears 7 of the bridge, according to figure 1; the two driving wheels 6 are connected to a common motor 9 arranged on a platform 11. Between the motor 9 and one of the wheels 6 is a corrective device 16, arranged on a platform 18. The corrective device is operated by a separate motor 17.
The opposite shafts 15 and 14, connected to the actuating motor 8, rotate with the same speed, but the shaft 15, disposed between the gear 7 and the correcting apparatus 16, has a speed of rotation which is greater. or less than the speed of rotation of the shaft 14, when the correction motor 17 is rotating. In the traveling crane according to FIG. 2, the wheels 6, arranged in the side members, are actuated by separate motors 8a and 8b, arranged on the platforms 10a and 10b. In one of the spars of the bridge, - are arranged indicating and steering means 19a and 19b, As shown in Figure 3, the indicating means comprises a shaft 33, sliding in the brackets 26, attached to the platform 21 of the lower side of the side member 2.
On this shaft, there are two disks 32 which can rotate around the shaft, but are axially stationary on the shaft. The discs 32 are arranged on either side of one of the track rails 20, which rail is then also used as a guide rail. In the bridge of figure 1, the rheostat influences the excitation current of the corrector motor 17. In the bridge of figure 2, the rheostat influences the excitation current
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
actuating motors 8a and 8b. The conductors 29a and 29b and 30a and 30b connect the rheostats to said motors.
The steering mechanism works as follows: when the side members, during the translation of the PNnt frame along the track, change their position relative to the rail 20, the discs 32 and the shaft 33 are moved sideways - ment in the appliques 26. As a result of this displacement of the shaft <33, the movable contacts 28 of the rheostats 27 are moved and the field current of the actuating motors 8a and 8b or the field current of the motor corrector 17 is influenced so as to increase or decrease the speed of the driving wheels of one or both of the side members. When the bridge moves in the direction of arrow A, the front indicator and director means 19a steer the bridge.
When the bridge moves in the direction of arrow B, the indicator and director means 19b are at the front and then provide the steering. Whatever the indicating and steering means 19a or 19b which is at the front of the chassis, it is connected to the field circuit of the motors by a member not shown. When the bridge changes its position relative to the track, the members 19a and 19b are actuated. When the bridge moves in the direction of arrow A and the front part of its right side member is on the right, the contact 28 of the rheostat 27 moves to the left relative to a resistance coil placed on the bracket 25. The drive motor or the correction motor is then influenced so that the drive wheel of the right side member turns faster or the drive wheel of the left side member turns more slowly.
By this process, the bridge frame is brought to assume the required angular and lateral position relative to the guide rail.
The invention is obviously not limited to the embodiment of the figures / and the speed of the driving wheels can also be modified in other ways. It is only important that the indicator and steering means located at the front of the crane frame influence
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
cent the speed of the driving wheels.
