<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The transmission of a rotational force can be done by various devices. In particular, transmissions are known in which the motor shaft drives, following a rotational movement, a first rotating part such as an ordinary pulley, a grooved pulley, a toothed wheel, etc. with which a means cooperates. hose, belt, chain or other which drives a second rotating part, of the same kind as the first, mounted on the receiving shaft.
For this type of transmission, in order to have several different angular speeds on the receiving shaft, it is known to make use of so-called stepped or stepped pulleys, fixed on the shaft; in this case, the distance between the axes of the motor shaft and the receiving shaft is constant and a step of one pulley is constantly opposite the corresponding step of the other pulley, the passage of the means
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
flexible from one step to another producing the speed change.
Transmissions are also known comprising a single driving toothed wheel and several receiving toothed wheels placed side by side, the passage of the drive chain from one receiving toothed wheel to another is obtained by lateral traction on the slack end of the chain, subjected to a tensioner roller.
In general, known transmission systems comprising a flexible drive means cooperating with stepped pulleys give only a number of speeds limited to the number of stages of one of these; furthermore, in some types the flexible means is subjected to a certain force perpendicular to the direction of its movement which causes harmful transverse bending.
The present invention relates to a transmission device in which a drive element made up of several parts of different diameters drives, by flexible means, a receiver element also made up of several parts of different diameters and characterized in that one or the another of said motor and receiver elements can be moved laterally so that any of the parts which constitute it can be brought into the plane of any of the parts constituting the other element and in which the drive means acts.
In other words, according to the invention, one of the motor or receiver elements is mounted on the shaft which carries it so as to be movable under the action of any command so that any part of an element can be combined. with a party
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
one of the other so that these two parts and the flexible drive means always act in a common plane perpendicular to the motor and receiver shafts. The distance between the axes can be constant in which case it is necessary to have recourse to tensioners flexible means or else it can be variable, one of the axes then being movable parallel to itself.
An important part of the present invention relates to an engine support specially provided for the practical application of the transmission device.
According to one particular feature, the support comprises a 'fixed frame carrying a console, provided with a mobile support table for the engine, and tiltably mounted with respect to a pivot shaft so as to create a permanent torque of variable value. according to the positions of the motor but balanced for each of these by an elastic system such as a spring, the action of which, variable in the same way, is regulated by a control; the motor support shelf or base slides on the console, along the pivot shaft.
In an advantageous embodiment, the console ends with a foot to which is articulated a connecting rod to a screw rod cooperating with a sleeve on which the elastic system acts.
The present invention will be more easily understood from the following description of the appended drawings which show, by way of illustration only, one mode of application of the invention.

The rod 13 is screwed into the pipe 118 which can be rotated by acting on the handwheel I4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Thanks to the device which has just been described, the shelf 6 is sliding and tilting; it serves as a mounting base for the motor shown schematically at 2, the shaft of which is carrying the pulley 15 consisting of four grooves of different diameters.
By moving laterally the shelf 6, by the rotation of the lever 8, it is possible to bring any groove of this pulley 15 of the motor shaft in the plane of any groove of the stepped pulley partially shown at 16 (figures 3 and 4) and fixed on the receiving shaft; by way of example, in FIG. 3, the two grooves of small diameters are in correspondence; in figure 4 the groove of minimum diameter belonging to the driving pulley 15 is in the plane of that of maximum diameter on the receiving pulley 16.
The grooves of suitable diameters being in the same plane, the flexible drive means 17 are placed in this plane.
By Figures 1 and 2 we see that the shelf 6, the console 5 and the motor 2 create, whatever their position thirst, a torque; this variable moment is taken up by the feet 5c and transmitted by the connecting rods 9 and the arms 10 to the socket 11 to be balanced at any time by the action, also variable, of the spring 12 which can be compressed or decompressed by a minimal force on the steering wheel 14.
In the position shown in Figure 1, the torque is maximum and the spring is compressed to the maximum, the shelf being fully lowered; in figure 2, on the contrary, the torque is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
minimum and the spring 12 is compressed to the minimum. When, after having turned the lever 8, any step of the pulley 15 has been brought into possible cooperation with any appropriate gazdin of the pulley 16, the shelf 6 is fixed in position by a wedging locking system of the type known in operating lever 18; the correct tension of the flexible element 17 brought to the corresponding steps is obtained by acting on the handwheel 14.
Among the advantages of the device described one can mention the large number of possible speeds, easily obtained by the displacement of the motor which makes it possible to place any step of the driving pulley in the plane of any step of the receiving pulley. Thus, in the en which has just been described, since the driving pulley and the receiving pulley each have four steps, it is possible to obtain sixteen angular speeds; if one had six steps and the other four, we would have twenty-four speeds; furthermore, owing to the fact that the torque of the motor of the console and of the tablet is constantly balanced, only a minimal effort is then required to cause the tilting.
