the gas must always + - flow through the grid from top to bottom due to its high dust content, so that the layer of granules can act as a filter and the chain grid itself remains clean. The gas guiding provided in known installations requires a complicated construction of the gas guiding hub, as well as a special consumption of energy, in order to overcome the losses of additional charges. Sometimes it is even necessary to provide several wind tunnels.
In order to obtain identical results, however without the costs mentioned and without having to accept the resulting losses, it is possible to use another process. The latter consists of loading the fresh granules on the chain grid and unloading them in the form of dried granules, then these same granules pass through the following fresh granules through the device through which the hot gases from the oven pass from the top downwards, into the furnace itself and are introduced into the latter under the ton of pre-calcined granules. Two layers of granules are therefore always placed one on top of the other and the burnt gases are sucked only once through said layers. The process according to the invention can be implemented in one direction or else in the opposite direction.
In the first case, the layers of material are arranged directly one on top of the other, which is achieved by the fact that the granules. dried; after their unloading from the chain grate, are immediately piled on the following fresh granules and are separated from them after their second run of the device, in order to be then brought to the oven.
When it comes to hot treatment plants working with chain screens for granules, it is known to divide the layer disposed on the grid when it leaves the latter in order to bring the separated part back to the installation of preparation of the raw material, however here it is still a homogeneous mixture of granules, which has the disadvantage that essential constituent parts of the prepared granules always return again to the granulation device, which obviously reduces the plant performance.
The device for carrying out the method according to the invention is clearly distinguished from that described above owing to the fact that two layers of granules, separated from one another and undergoing a different treatment, are moved on the grid to chain.

In development of the invention, the layer of granules 04-03-r'e can first be conducted on a separator device in order to eliminate the broken and fine parts, the latter can then be returned to the granulation device, while the granules which pass over the sieve are brought back to pass the device a second time. Therefore it is possible

z -2e precalculate flawless granules and bring them to the actual cJhoi1'ation oven.
When the process according to the invention is implemented in the opposite direction, the fresh granules are loaded onto the lower strand of the chain grid, then, in a second phase, they are loaded onto the upper strand of said grid and are fed. in the calcination oven. The simplest unloading of the dried granules from the lower strand of the chain grid is achieved by dropping the said granules into a collecting device which brings the granules to an elevating conveyor. To allow the granules to fall, the lower strand must be guided on an intermediate reversing roller so that the folded end of the lower strand can adopt.

The two layers move on the upper strand of the chain grate in the direction of the main furnace and are traversed during this time by the burnt gases from said furnace, possibly mixed with the fresh gas.
While the cooled gases are drawn in through the openings 19, the gas-treated granules arrive at the reversing roller 8 and are separated here by the adjustable chute 20 into pre-treated, finished granules.
