<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of a folding staircase for installation in vehicles, for example airplanes, in which the compartment intended for the crew, passengers or other persons is so high, when the airplane. or the equivalent is on the floor, that a staircase is necessary to conveniently access that compartment from the floor. The need for a folding staircase has been recognized in the case of airplanes landing at aerodromes or airports where no movable exterior stairs are available.
Another advantage of a folding staircase which can be accommodated in the aircraft, results from the considerable time saving achieved by allowing access to the aircraft and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to get out of it, in comparison with the case where a movable staircase must be brought to the plane whenever it is necessary. It is also desirable that the arrangement permit the connection of the operative link to the door of the aircraft fuselage, or the equivalent,
in such a way that the operations of opening the door and extending the stairs as well as those of removing the stairs in the folded state and closing the door are carried out automatically in the correct order.
According to the invention, the folding staircase comprises a set of stringers and steps arranged in articulated sections capable of being folded back by folding one over the other around suitably spaced transverse axes, a device for climbing the stringers of the interior section on fixed pivots in the cabin or the equivalent a set of connecting rods connecting the moving parts of the staircase, a device in the cabin or the equivalent to control this set of connecting rods such that during the pivoting movement of the interior stringers towards the exterior, this set of connecting rods is actuated to unfold the sections (and vice versa), and between the staircase and the door a connection such that the latter opens automatically when deployment,
that is to say the movement of the staircase towards the outside, is initiated and that it closes automatically when the movement of the staircase inward is finished.
The manner in which the invention may be put into practice is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings which show a folding staircase for the cabin of a passenger aircraft. Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing show respectively in perspective and in side elevation the staircase in its extended or extended position. Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the staircase in a partially folded position, Figure 4 is a fragmentary view on a larger scale of the side opposite to Figures 1 and 2, showing the mechanism by means of which the door is connected to the staircase and Figure 5 is a side elevation of the staircase

The staircase itself consists of the conventional links or uprights 15,15 and the steps or rungs 16,16, but it is divided transversely into three sections, namely, the inner section A, the middle section B and the head section C which are articulated to each other so that they can be folded by pivoting around the pivots 17 and 18. A folding ramp or dwarf compound 19 carried by balusters 20 which are articulated - to the stringers 15, is provided on each side of the staircase: as will be described below, each section A, B or C of the staircase constitutes an integral frame together with the parts of the associated ramp.
The interior section A of the staircase (that is to say the section which occupies the position at the top of the staircase when the latter is extended or extended) is hinged inside the cabin.

For this purpose, the inner ends of the stringers 15 of this inner section A are bent at 151 and an offset part of each section is articulated on a fixed pivot 21 located in the interior of the cabin just below it. bay 12 of the door. A hydraulic jack 22e25 is mounted in the cabin, preferably under the floor 111, the cylinder 22 of the jack being articulated at 24 to the frame 10 and the outer end of the plunger 2 being artîouldo at another point 25 at the bent part. 151 of the Interior section of the stringer 15.

At the other end of each lever 27 is articulated a rod 30 articulated at 31 to the second baluster 30 (the section A and at 32 to a reversal lever 33 which is articulated at 34 on the side of the stringer. the other end of the reversing lever 33 is connected by a connecting rod 35 to a fixed point 36 of the intermediate section B.
A tie rod 37 connects the connecting rod 35 to the second baluster 20 of section B at 38, an extension of the tie rod 37 being connected at 39 to a second reversing lever 40 which is hinged at 41 on the side of the stringer. The other end of the lever 40 is connected by a connecting rod 42 to a fixed part 43 of the outer section C and a short connecting rod 44 forms a pivoting connection between the connecting rod 42 and the baluster 20 of the section C at 45.
The arrangement is such that when the cylinder 22, 23 is actuated with the stairs in the retracted position, as shown in Figure 5, the plunger 23 pushes the inner sections A of the stringers 15 outwardly. rotating around the pivots 21. When the stringers rotate, the cam sliders 28 cooperate with the cam slides 29 to actuate the levers 27, which they rotate clockwise relative to in Figures 2 and 3, which has the effect of causing angular displacements in the same direction of the reversing levers 33 and 40 and of unfolding the staircase until it finally reaches the position shown in Figure 2 after passing successively through the positions shown in figure 4 and figure 3.
A reverse operation of the jacks 22,30 causes a reverse operation to remove the staircase in the folded position shown in Figure 5.
The ramps or handrails 19 are unfolded and folded synchronously with the operations of unfolding and folding the staircase. A pair of balusters of each section i.e. the second baluster of sections A and B and the balusters of section C are actuated by the systems of connecting rods and levers already described,
