<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

This invention relates to cyclone hearths and a method for driving a cyclone hearth to produce heat.
The cyclone fireplace was originally intended to burn solid fuels in the form of coarse particles or in granular form, liable to produce slag.
In the normal operation of a cyclone furnace intended to burn such a fuel, the ground fuel, entrained in a preheated primary air stream constituting 15 to 25% of the total air required for combustion, is introduced tangentially into a burner approximately cylindrical at one end of the hearth and, to complete combustion, secondary air constituting 75 to 85%
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the total of the air from the eldest to combustion, is introduced tangentially to the circnferential wall of the cyclone hearth in the same direction of rotation as the primary air and the fuel.
the incoming primary fuel and iron reactor is ignited rapidly and the centrifugal action of the swirling current causes the deposit in the molten state on the firebox wall of ash particles released from the igniting fuel particles and the formation of a film or layer of molten slag on which the larger fuel particles are arrested and burned in place - The non-combustible ash constituting the residue is discharged and flows molten through a discharge outlet slag located in a lower part of the cyclone hearth and the gaseous products of combustion are discharged from the hearth chamber through a concentric gas outlet at the other end of the hearth.
Cyclone foci of this type are described in British Patent No. 598,141.
However, an advantage of this cyclone hearth is that it is eminently suitable for burning gaseous and liquid fuels and can burn these fuels at rates and with yields equal to those obtained by burning pulverized coal.
Heretofore, when a liquid fuel was sent to a cyclone furnace as an auxiliary fuel to assist an intermittent admission of solid fuel, the practice was to inject the liquid fuel through the ports of the dry air and. in the secondary air stream by means of a nozzle pipe extending longitudinally of the cyclone hearth. By such an arrangement the oil is caught up and atomized or atomized, by the secondary air at high speed.
The burner of liquid fuel being thus located and the quantities of primary and secondary air being proportioned so as to reduce the resistance of the current of air and gas to a minimum; when these proportions are approximately 85% of the total amount of combustion air
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
introduced into the cyclone hearth as secondary air and about 15% introduced as primary air, the pressure drop in the cyclone hearth at the maximum continuous rate still amounts to approximately 30 or 35 inches (76 to 88 cm) column of water, mainly as a result of the violent vortex produced in the cyclone hearth by the swirling current of secondary air.
The power required for the forced draft fan to overcome this resistance to air and gas flow greatly exceeds the corresponding resistance encountered in a conventional liquid fuel heated installation.
As a cyclone hearth plant arranged to burn either oil or coal may be called upon to burn oil for long periods of time, a reduction in the pressure drop across the hearth and the resulting economy of power. of the fan during periods of oil burning are matters of considerable importance.
The present invention includes the method of operating a cyclone hearth for heat production which comprises supplying a stream of fuel and primary air from one end of the cyclone hearth chamber such that the current revolves around the axis of this chamber as it moves towards the other end of it during the combustion of the fuel and to introduce secondary air at a high speed tangentially or roughly tangentially to the circumferential wall of the hearth chamber and in an area between the fuel inlet and the gas outlet of the hearth chamber, the fuel in the form of atomized fluid fuel being introduced in a proportion of 40 to 60 % of the Total amount of combustion air.
The successful invention comprises a cyclone hearth having a combustion chamber of pratifquemnt circular cross-section, delimited by circulation-cooled walls with an exposed internal refractory surface, devices for sending a swirling current of primary air to the chamber through
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
air inlet devices at one end of the chamber, an inside projecting neck forming a gas outlet surrounded by an annular pocket at the other end of the chamber and devices for introducing air secondary combustion air tangentially or substantially tangentially to the circumferential wall of the chamber,
the furnace heating device comprising a liquid atomizing burner arranged to supply a liquid fuel into the swirling primary air stream and to mix the fuel with this primary air stream.
The invention will be described below, by way of example with reference to the attached partially schematic drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a cyclone hearth disposed horizontally and of a lower part of an associated tubular steam generator for producing high pressure steam;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the cyclone hearth taken along line 2-2 of FIG. l; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the liquid fuel burner and the air regulating damper system taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
As shown, the cyclone hearth 10 is approximately circular in cross section and is arranged so that its longitudinal axis is substantially horizontal. The combustion chamber 12 of the hearth is formed of closely spaced tubes provided with lugs and covered with a layer of suitable refractory material, as is generally described in British Pat. No. 598,141 the secondary air intake device comprises a duct 16 connected to a suitable source of air. pressurized air and opening in a series of lucres. secondary air palced side by side 18 and disposed tangentially to the hearth chamber 12 along a major portion of the length thereof.
Secondary air lights 18 are
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
provided with registers operable to regulate the speed of the secondary air currents while maintaining the incoming air currents at all times substantially tangential to the wall of the hearth chamber.
The rear end of the cyclone hearth is partially closed by a vertical wall cooled by circulation of fluid
22, provided with a gas outlet 24 in the form of a re-entering neck
26 concentric with the axis of the hearth chamber. Below the gully 26, an outlet 28 for the slag is provided in the wall
22 for the discharge of molten slag when a solid fuel forming slag is burned in the hearth. The wall 22 is part of the circulating fluid cooling walls of an associated steam generator group 30, which is provided with a secondary combustion chamber 32 collecting the slag, a slag screen 34 and a chamber. gas cooling 36.
It is contemplated that only liquid fuel will be burnt in the cyclone hearth shown and a liquid fuel atomizer device 42 is mounted in a circular fuel inlet port 40 disposed concentrically at the front end of the firebox combustion chamber. A cover plate. circular ring 44 supports a central hub., not shown, through which passes a hollow spacer 46. Inside the latter is mounted a spray device 42 provided with a fuel supply device 48 to its outer end and a spray head 50 at its inner end on the fireplace side.
The spray head is preferably of a wide throw type with return flow, producing a conical jet of atomized liquid fuel, the axis of the jet being coaxial with the circular fuel inlet opening 40.
The primary air supply devices for the fuel sprayer comprise a duct 52 connected to a suitable source of pressurized air and covering in a casing 54 'which surrounds and is spaced from an air register 56. Primary Vair

his secondary air. the high speed of the air and of the fuel in ignition obliges the gases to follow a helical path towards the rear of the hearth where the direction of the gases is reversed before or they enter the concentric gas sortic 24] on this outlet 24., the gases pass into the.
chamber 32, and then through the slag screen 34 into the gas cooling chamber 36. The generated heating gases exit the upper end of the chamber 36 and come into contact with the convection-heated fluid heating tubes (not shown) of the vaneur generator
The primary air and secondary air currents are advantageously adjusted so as to give rise to? a minimum pressure drop in the cyclone hearth by using an optimum ratio between the primary air and the secondary combustion air.
Tests made with the cyclone hearth construction described. and various proportions between the primary air flow rates and the secondary combustion air flow rates at. the maximum fire rate established that the minimum air resistance in the cyclone hearth was obtained when the total quantity of air required for combustion was distributed to. approximately equally between the primary and secondary air supplied.
These tests indicated that the pressure drop in the cyclone hearth decreases to approximately half the resistance offered by the previous arrangement when adapting a primary air flow of 40% and a secondary air flow of 60. % and up to about a third of the resistance offered by the previous arrangement when adapting a primary air flow of 50% and a secondary air flow of 50%.
For 60% primary airflow and 40% secondary airflow there is an increase in resistance which, however, is still only about half the resistance encountered in the previous arrangement.
The cyclone hearth described is capable of burning liquid fuel over a wide range of loads with a low pressure drop in the cyclone hearth, with combustion
