D'autres objets de détails structuraux de l'invention ressorti- ront de la description suivante, en référence aux dessins ci-annexés, dans lesquels : - la figure 1 est une vue latérale d'un mécanisme à accouplement de commande d'un ruban, cette vue étant brisée de façon à montrer en coupe la relation des diverses parties du mécanisme; - la figure 2 est une coupe verticale suivant la ligne 2-2 de la figure 1, cette vue montrant la position relative de l'engrenage de reh- versement de marche de l'accouplement ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
sqment t- marche soit excité.. ' . .. ' èlt::" '"\'i ,1 ;1;' ;
-.:'
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a mechanism for controlling the progress of a recording or recorded material, for example in the form of a magnetic tape, and, in particular, to such a mechanism of the magnetic coupling type. , particularly suitable for use in controlling the progress of a magnetic recording employed in a high speed electronic computer.
In computers of the type in question, by way of example, the data to be reproduced is explored from two hundred and forty (or more) punched data cards per minute and is encoded by the inter - through a suitable converter, for its entry onto a magnetic tape by a recording head at a pulse density of one hundred and twenty articles per inch. The articles are grouped in spaced cells each comprising one hundred and twenty articles and six such cells form a section of seven hundred and twenty articles, which constitutes the minimum information or unit of data accepted by the computer.
The data recorded on the tape is subjected to a number of comparison and verification tests, which require back and forth movement of the tape, in order to read the data from each cell a certain number of times. In the various verification operations, the ribbon must be started, stopped and made to move in the opposite direction to its direction of advance, while after verification it must be returned to the place where the next cell data must be recorded, as described in patent application no. 432,087 filed June 12, 1956.
The present invention relates to a tape drive coupling device for a recording advancement mechanism, which can be magnetically conditioned for the purpose of tightly controlling the movement of a drive member to the tape. forward and backward.
The invention also relates to a compact structure with, .-. A minimum number of parts and a minimum amount of movement between the parts, when changing direction, so that the driven organ is positively. trained with as little wasted movement as possible.
Another subject of the invention is the arrangement of the conditioning means relative to one another, so that, during braking and driving in the opposite direction, the inertia of the number of parts to be win is kept to a minimum so that the driven member can quickly and accurately be turned on, off and reversed in motion so as to space data on a driven tape.
Other objects of structural details of the invention will emerge from the following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: - Figure 1 is a side view of a coupling mechanism for controlling a tape , this view being broken up so as to show in section the relation of the various parts of the mechanism; FIG. 2 is a vertical section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1, this view showing the relative position of the gear reversal of the coupling;

Referring in detail to the drawings, 10 denotes an electric motor suitably mounted, and providing a continuous drive of a cantilevered shaft 11 extending through an opening 12 in one end of the shaft. a coupling frame 130 The latter comprises spaced T-elements 14 and 15 on arms 16 of which are mounted, casing, the supports 17 and 18 of bearings 19 and 21 intended to support a secondary shaft 22 on the ends opposite which are wedged the pinion 23 and the toothed wheel 24. The pinion 23 is driven, by means of a free pinion 26, by a control pinion 27, the teeth of which are formed at one end of a sleeve 28 fixed by a pin 29 to the shaft 11.
The free gear 26 is mounted so as to be able to rotate freely on a cantilevered shaft 21 extending from the support 17 and the control is transmitted, by the auxiliary shaft 22 and the gear 24, to the gear. reverse gear 32, which will be discussed below: The sleeve 28 has, at its end opposite the pinion 27, a housing 33 intended to receive a compression spring 34, which bears against one of the plates a pair of bridging plates 36 and 37 (FIG. 3) arranged on opposite sides of a floating control transfer disc 38, this disc having on its periphery, from place to place, notches 39 intended for receive the laterally projecting tongues 41 of said plates,
which are perpendicular to each other, the plates and the disk each having a concentric opening in axial alignment with the shaft 11 of the motor.
The plate 36 is fixed to the recessed end of the socket 28, while the plate 37 is fixed to the hub of a frame 42 provided with a flange, so as to present a face part 430 The hub is fixed by pins 44, arranged like the strings of a bow, to the tubular part 46 of a coupling member 47 for driving forward, this member being mounted so as to be able to slide in a lining 48 provided in the The bore of an annular housing 49 fixed to a clamp 51 formed in the frame 130 The housing contains a coil 53 intended to form, when energized, an electromagnetic device referred to hereinafter as a control magnet or 'forward training, this magnet serving to attract the armature 42,
so as to bring the coupling member 47 into engagement with a coupling disc 53 via the annular friction blades 54, two sets of such blades being provided and being used as coverings for the. coupling element 47 and disc 53. Spring 34 maintains slight pressure on the coupling, but this pressure is not sufficient to bring the armature into contact with the magnet or to transmit the pressure. force for driving element 47 to disc 53. The spring takes up any lost movement possibly existing in the parts of the mechanism, so that the coupling immediately comes into action when the magnet is energized. The armature, which rotates with the socket 46, does not at any time come into contact with the control or forward drive magnet 52.
The forward control or drive disc 53 is pinned at 56 to the drive shaft 57, which is rotatably mounted in bearings 58 of an end wall of the. frame, the shaft being held in place by a retaining nut 59 and passing through a bearing closure plate 61 This shaft 57 carries at its outer end a capstan 62 having a cork surface or the like for advancing a tuban Te The latter is shown in phantom in the relative position it occupies with respect to a data reading and recording head 63 of the type shown in the aforementioned Belgian patent application.
The shaft 57 is supported by spaced sleeves 64 forming bearings for the sleeve 66 which is supported at one end in the paper 67 of a opening 68 provided with an outer rim serving as a support at one end of a. compression spring 69, the opposite end of which is supported on a ring
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
71 fixed in the clamp or clamping element 51.This spring will exert a slight pressure on the end of the bush 66, so as to keep the coupling plate 72 of the reverse gear not in engagement with the annular blades 73 arranged on the opposite face of the coupling plate 74 fixed by a pin 75 to the control or drive shaft 57.
Sleeve 66 is slidably supported in liner or liner 76 of the bore of a gait reversal control magnet 77; this magnet being mounted in a housing 80 and having a structure similar to that of the above-described magnet 52 for controlling the forward movement. To the socket 66 is fixed by pins 78 mounted in the manner of bowstrings, a frame 79 on the hub 81 of which the pinion 32 is fixed with a suitable mounting sleeve 82.
The reversing control magnet 77 is secured in a clamp or clamp 83 adjacent to a clamp or similar clamp 84, in which is held a limb 86 for a brake magnet. In the bore of this housing there is provided a liner or gasket 87 in which is mounted, in such a manner as to be able to turn, a sleeve part 88 having a shape such that it has at one end a coupling plate of. braking 89 supported on annular blades 91 on the opposite face of the coupling disc 74.
At the opposite end of the sleeve 88 is fixed by pins 92 forming cords (FIG. 4) the hub 93 of an armature 94 disposed opposite the coil 96 forming the braking magnet in the housing 86, the hub 93 having a housing 97 in which there is a compression spring 98 which bears against a cavalier coupling plate 99 fixed to the frame.
The spring takes up the lost movement possibly existing between the coupling plate 89 and the blades 91, but does not establish a drive connection between these elements, this drive being provided when the braking magnet 96 is energized. so as to attract the armature 94 towards it, the latter being at all times separated from the magnet and being free to turn. The plates 99 and 102 form a coupling similar to that shown in FIG. 3 and are provided with tabs 101 intended to penetrate into notches 103 of a central transfer disc 104, the structure and purpose of this arrangement being substantially the same as those of elements 36, 37 and 38 described above.
In operation of the coupling as a whole, when the tape T is to be driven forward, the forward movement control magnet 52 is energized and attracts the armature 42, so as to trans - carry out the control from the sleeve 28, through the transfer disc 38 and the sleeve 46, to part 53 and from there, through the shaft 57, to the capstano The transmission from or pinion 27, passing through free pinion 26, pinion 23, output shaft 22, pinion 24 and reversing pinion 32 is constant, but has no effect, unless the control magnet of the backward movement or reversal

Between the forward drive and reverse motion operations or for any stopping of the tape, the energization of the braking magnet 96 will have the effect of attracting the armature 94 and preventing, by through the sleeve 88 and the parts 39, the rotation of the coupling disc 74 and of the shaft 57 to which it is fixed by the pin 75. To reverse the direction of travel, tape, l The reversing magnet 77 is energized so as to attract its frame 79 and axially displace the bush 66, which has the effect of causing the coupling plate 74 'to be driven by the plate 72.
The reversing gears then rotate the shaft 57 in the opposite direction to that of the shaft 11, so that the crank is moved rearward. Stopping the tape during its movement
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
towards the rear is effected by energizing the braking magnet 96, as described above. When any one of the magnets is energized, the others are de-energized.
The combinations of transfer plates and floating discs act as adjustable drive connectors, and the various springs maintain the non-drive connections between the drive coupling elements, except at times when they are acting, under the control of the various armatures, of so as to drive the tape forwards and backwards or to stop its movement in either direction.
It is clear that the construction of the coupling has the particular effect of allowing very precise control of the movement of a ribbon in one or the other direction and of the stopping of this ribbon, in order to ensure c - Adequate registration and spacing perations. This effect is obtained by ensuring that a minimum movement can occur between the parts actuated by the various control magnets of the coupling operations and by providing a minimum of parts for the execution of the work.
Although the new fundamental features of the invention have been shown and described in their application to a specific type of coupling, it will be understood that various omissions, institutions and modifications may be made by those skilled in the art. form and details of the illustrated device and in its operations, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, as defined in the following claims.
