<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a device suitable for determining the propulsion of a bicycle or the like, replacing or, preferably, in addition to the normal crankset. This propulsion device can be applied to the rear wheel and, preferably, to the front wheel.
The device, which is the subject of the invention, comprises, essentially, a handlebar constituted by moving parts influenced in turn by the action of the cyclic pressure exerted on the handles of the handlebars of bicycles and the like. during use of the vehicle by the cyclist, means being provided for transforming these cyclical movements and transmitting them to a wheel of the vehicle.
In practice, one can have recourse to a handlebar provided with two organs mounted so as to be able to oscillate coaxially, each of these organs being provided with a projecting arm constituting the handle on which the hand bears part of the weight. of the cyclist; the cyclical movements performed by the cyclist are such that the two handles are pressed alternately in such a way that they alternately accomplish angular displacements around their common axis; the recall movements can optionally be produced by suitable antagonistic means.
Each of these two oscillating members is connected, by a transmission and means for transforming the movement, to a wheel of the vehicle.
The aforementioned transmission and transformation means may advantageously consist of joints connected, on the one hand, to said members and, on the other hand, to a device similar to a crankset in order to transform the reciprocating movement into rotational movement.
In practice, the two aforementioned oscillating members can optionally be produced in the form of sleeves aligned coaxially and oriented in opposite directions with respect to shafts originating on the moving assembly to which the handlebars are normally connected, these sleeves being provided with projecting handles, with respect to the axis of oxcillation, as well as levers which form part of said transmission. These protruding handles on the levers can be adjustable in length.
The invention will be better understood if reference is made to the description below, relating to the appended drawing which shows, by way of example, a possible embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 shows, in side view, a bicycle.
Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale, the front part of the bicycle fitted with the device forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 3 shows, on a slightly smaller scale and in plan along III-III fig. 2, the same plane device.
Fig. 4 shows, in section, one of the two oscillating members produced according to a variant, the section being made by the axis of oscillation.
The example shown includes a propulsion device connected to the front or steering wheel 1. For this purpose, the wheel 1 is mounted on a fork 2, the axis of which is housed in the steering sleeve 3 of the frame so as to constitute the mobile equipment on which the handlebars are normally mounted.
As a replacement for the conventional handlebars, a member 5 is provided on the fork axle 4 which has at each end an integral shaft 6; lesdeux shafts 6 are opposite and coaxial. In the variant shown in fig. 4 the member 5 has a bent shape different from that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
On the aforementioned shafts 6 are mounted sleeves 7, ball and / or roller or needle bearings 8 being suitably provided between the members 6 and 7; these sleeves are held in place, in the axial direction, for example by means of nuts and locknuts 9 which are
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
screw on the protruding, shouldered and threaded end of the shafts 6, as shown in the figures. On the ends of the sleeves 7 arise arms 7a bent backwards and provided with handles 10. Consequently, these handles can oscillate around the axis of the sleeves 7 and of the shafts 6, the oscillations taking place independently.
The arms 7a and, consequently, the handles 10, are constantly urged upwards by suitable opposing means, for example springs 11; against the action of these antagonistic means, during the alternating movements which he performs to press on the normal pedals of the bicycle, the cyclist has a tendency not only to move the handles cyclically up and down while alternately taking support on them- here, but also to remind them-up in unison with the springs. This effect is exploited by the device described in such a way that it produces an auxiliary propulsive movement by means of a transmission placed between said handles and a wheel, in the case considered the front wheel.
For this purpose, and according to the example shown, a transmission is provided which consists of a lever 12, integral with each of the sleeves 7 and able to move angularly and cyclically with the corresponding sleeve. On a frame 13 is mounted an axis 14 similar to that of a crankset, which moves in block with the fork 2. On this axis 14 is mounted a toothed plate 15 as well as a set of cranks 16, the outer radial ends of these cranks 16 are connected to the respective levers 12 by means of pins 17.
Antagonist springs 18, the action of which is added to that of the springs 11 (it can even replace the action of these springs. It) ensures the rotation of the wheel 15, the return of the handles 10 to the high position. , and, in the absence of any external stresses, the return of the two handles in a uniform angular position. Thanks to the joints 12, 16 and 17 we obtain, from the oscillations of the sleeves 7, a rotation of the axis 14 and, consequently, of the plate 15. By means of a chain 19 the movement of the plate 15 is transmitted to the pinion 20 integral with the wheel 1 of the bicycle or the like, the pinion 20 being advantageously constituted by a pinion. freewheel.
By acting alternately on the two handles under the effect of the weight of his body, the cyclist thus exploits the thrust exerted on the handle to produce the oscillation of the sleeves 7 and, consequently, to obtain the propulsion at the same time. 'using wheel 1; the return movement can also be accelerated by the return effect obtained by hand. This propulsion is therefore carried out without making the slightest modification to the physiological movement of pedaling and even with a certain ease of assisting it, precisely by the fact that the handles 10 yield elastically.
If one does not want to take advantage of this auxiliary propulsion device, it is possible to provide means suitable for ensuring the locking of the sleeves on the shafts 6 so as to form a rigid structure similar to that of a handlebar. ordinary.
The arrangement of the oscillating members may be different from that shown, consisting essentially of the sleeves 7; moreover, it is also possible to provide a different arrangement of the transmission, with or without appropriate articulations, as well as with or without chain transmission; for example, it is not excluded to directly combine the movement of the sleeves with a member such as a differential or the like capable of effecting movements such as to require only a single transmission to the wheel.
The handle levers and those of the joints can be suitably made with the possibility of longitudinal adjustment.
It is therefore understood that the drawing only shows a schematic embodiment of the invention, given by way of example only, since

many variants and modifications can be envisaged without, however, departing from the scope of the invention.
