<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a method and a device for drying grains and other fermentable substances enclosed in enclosed spaces such as silos, for example. We know in fact that in order to avoid the deterioration of the grains due to the action
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
microbial which appears in the presence of water it is necessary to remove the water which is in excess in 'these grains.
In accordance with the invention, the grains or products to be dried are stored in a closed cell and dry by a hot air circuit working in a closed circuit. The hot air charged with water vapor after its passage through the grain abandons this water vapor by condensation as it passes through a cooled chamber. The cooling of the cold room is obtained by simply circulating water at ordinary temperature. The cooled and dehydrated air is reheated and again draws through the products.
The invention is therefore characterized by dehydration of the grains or products to be dried carried out by a current of heated and pulsed air through the products. drying which then passes into a cooled chamber, by circulating cold water at ordinary temperature, where the water vapor contained in the air condenses, which is then reheated and pulsates again through the grains or products to be dried .
The device used to implement the process is coated by a fan which sucks the heated air in a hot chamber and delivers it to the base of the sealed cell which contains the grains, or other products to be dried, until at a certain distance from the hermetically closed cover, the air which has become charged with humidity by passing through the mass to be dried descends through a tube starting from the upper part of the cell and ending in a chamber cooled by a battery of finned tubes traversed by a current of water at a temperature of about 10 ° C to 15 ° C the air abandons its water vapor by condensation and returns to the heating chamber where it heats up and is sucked again by the fan.
The previous device is still characterized by a register
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
placed on the hot air delivery pipe and a damper placed on the descent pipe for the air charged with water vapor, the openings of which are connected and controlled by a thermostat placed in the hot chamber.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of the invention.
The cell containing the grain to be desiccated 1 consists of a silo 2 provided at its tapered base with the emptying hatch 3 of any known type; the cover has inspection manholes 4 or material descent 5 and 6 which are closed in a sealed manner.
At the bottom of the silo is arranged a perforated tube 7 which is connected through the bottom to the hot air delivery tube 8 by the fan 9 which sucks the air 4 through the hot chamber 11 through line 10. inside which is placed the combustion chamber 12 in which is mounted a gas or oil burner 13 of a known type. If the combustion gases are harmful to the grains or the material to be dried, they are evacuated into the open air through an evacuation pipe 14.
The hot air discharged through the holes of the tube 7 passes through the mass to be dried, becomes charged with humidity and leaves this mass at the upper part of the silo where a free space has been reserved for materials or grains to be dried. In this free space 15 is the perforated part 16 of a tube 17 which descends through the silo, the bottom of which it passes through to end in the cold room 18 in which is arranged a battery of finned tubes 19 which is traversed by a current of water coming either from a water distribution network or from a pumping station.
The hot air, passing through this coil, cools and gives up its water vapor by condensation. The cooled air is drawn in through line 20
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in the hot chamber 11 from where it resumes its circuit.
The condensation water leaves the cold room 19 through the pipe 21 and can be collected in a gauged tank, not shown.
A register 22 is mounted in the pipe 8 and another register 23 is mounted in the pipe 17. The openings of these registers are regulated and controlled by a thermostat 24 placed in the heating chamber 11. Control thermometers 25
26 27 are placed in the circuit to control the temperature of the air before entering the silo, at the outlet of the silo and at the exit of the cold room. A thermometer 28 placed at the top of the grain or of the materials to be dried makes it possible to control the temperature in the upper part of the products to be dried.
OPERATION After starting the fan -9, the operation is carried out in three phases:
1 heating phase of the circuit: the hot chamber is put into service, the cold chamber remaining at room temperature, that is to say that the cooling water is not run through the battery of tubes a aliettes%) drying phase as soon as it is noted that the grains or the Whole grains to be dried have taken a temperature of around 40 c while leaving the hot room to work, the cold room is put into service by opening the circulation circuit cooling water. The condensed water drains out of the cold room.
3 grain cooling phase: as soon as the drying is finished, the heating of the heating chamber is stopped and the cold chamber is left in service to allow the grain to return to ambient temperature.
It is recommended to gauge the condensed water leaving the cold room - to stop the heating operation as soon as it is estimated that the. quantity of water withdrawn corresponds to the rate of: desired drying.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Of course, all the apparatus can be provided for automatic operation by application of known methods.
The drying thus carried out at a sufficiently low temperature so as not to alter the baking qualities or the germination power of the grains or the qualities of the materials to be dried, is a progressive drying which avoids the brutal treatment of ordinary dryers.
All the elements of the device: fan, heating chamber, cold chamber, can advantageously be assembled on a mobile trolley in order to be able to treat several cells or,. silos successively with the same device.
It goes without saying that the shapes, details, raw materials and various arrangements may vary without departing from the scope of the present invention.
