<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
150g de phénol cristallisé
50g de sulfate de cuivre
20g d'orangé 2 (orangé de ss-naphtol)
1g de rhodamine
36 litres d'eau .
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Method and device for manufacturing pencils
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a method and a device for the manufacture of pencils by spinning or extrusion of a plastic mass consisting of wood flour added with a binder, coating a lead made in advance or preferably. . threaded in one and the same operation as the envelope which surrounds it.
It has already been proposed to make the envelopes of the pencils using synthetic shredded masses constituted by a fibrous plant material in the state of fine division, added with binders such as an adhesive, a synthetic resin, casein or similar materials, The present invention relates firstly to the preparation of a synthetic mass of this kind based on wood fiber and casein and which has particularly favorable properties for the manufacture of pencils
In the manufacture of pencils comprising envelopes made of a plastic mass, this mass is generally extruded together with the lead through suitably placed nozzles and the finished raw pencil is then dried and hardened, for example by heat.
Such a mass must satisfy certain conditions, it must be easy to spin and be able to harden quickly enough to form a homogeneous mass and firmly attached to the lead; it must also have an appearance and properties approaching as much as possible, in particular as regards hardness, to those of the best natural woods used for the manufacture, pencil envelopes, for example cedar wood.
In the case where a coarse lead or a coarse mass is used for the spinning of the mines, it is further important in the manufacture of pencils according to the process. above, that the forman envelope mass exhibits a
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sufficient permeability for the impregnation of the raw pencil lead extruded with suitable oils or with molten waxes without the impregnating agents being of course capable of dissolving or of softening the mass forming the envelope.
All the conditions listed above are satisfied by the process forming the object of the present invention and characterized by the fact that it consists in preparing a mass of synthetic wood constituted by wood fibers in a state of aivision. extremely fine, and by a binder formed by casein with the addition of borax, a higher fatty acid such as oleic acid, stearic acid or the like, with an emulsifier usually used for fatty acids, thus a preservative, in particular phenol and optionally copper sulphate, this mass further containing, if desired, dyes which impart to this mass, for example the coloring of natural wood.
In the case of using wood species poor in tannin, for example lime, the invention further provides for the addition of gallic acid.
By way of example, an embodiment of the method forming the subject of the invention has been described below and shown in the accompanying drawing, as well as a device for the manufacture of rods by simultaneous spinning in one. one and the same operation of the mine and the envelope.
FIG. 1 shows in axial elevation section a double die for the simultaneous extrusion of the mine and of the casing.
Figures 2 and 3 show cross-sections of this die, respectively along lines II-II and III-III of Figure 1 '.
Figures 4 to 6 are views corresponding to those of Figures 1 to 3 of an improved embodiment of the douole die.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
FIG. 7 shows in axial elevation section the entire machine intended for the manufacture of rods by extrusion and comprising a double die fed by a press.
The preparation of the plastic mass intended to form the pencil envelopes is carried out by mixing a suspension of casein in water by stirring and reheating at about 70 ° C. with borax, with the suitable dyes and with phnol until obtaining a clear solution; after this first operation, the other constituents are gradually introduced into this solution without further heating, after which the flour or the wood grain is kneaded by adding a suitable quantity of the solution until a moldable mass having substantially the same consistency of putty.
The use according to the invention of a weakly alkaline product such as borax facilitates the dissolution of the casein which combines in this form in a particularly intimate manner with the constituents of the wood.
Among the others, alkali bodies, borax has the advantage that the subsequent gelatinization of albumin takes place more slowly and more regularly and that the presence of an excess of borax already exerts a certain effect. It is also advantageous to add urea which can replace part of the borax to make the casein soluble.
The addition of a higher fatty acid derived from a fatty substance, and more especially from an oil, exerts a particularly favorable effect on the properties of the mass of synthetic wood thus obtained. This addition prevents too rapid drying of the mass, which avoids the production of internal stresses and deformations.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in the mass. This is particularly important when this mass is used for the manufacture of the envelopes of the rods because the slightest irregularities in the envelope adversely affect the good behavior and the centering of the lead.
In addition, the addition of a fatty acid improves the malleability of the mass and has the effect that the reduction in friction which results therefrom makes it possible to significantly reduce the extrusion pressure, this reduction being able to reach approximately. one third of the value of the pressure generally used.
Finally, the preservation effect exerted by phenol or by copper sulphate is particularly favorable to the stability of both albuminous materials and of wood. Thanks to the combination according to the invention of the various constituents of the mass to be extruded, it is possible to store this mass in the wet state and to keep it for a few days in a usable state without fear of premature hardening or attack. by microorganisms.
In order to obtain rapid hardening and greater resistance to humidity of the finished product, it is advantageous to subject the mass after extrusion to the action of formaldehyde in the form of steam or a bath (for example of a solution having a concentration of 10%), this treatment giving rise to a partial condensation reaction of casein as well as phenol or urea with formaldehyde, with formation of a synthetic resin.
The proportions of the various constituents of the mass intended for the manufacture of the pencil cases can be, for example, the following:
20kg of wood flour or wood flower 5.5kg of casein
900g of borax
500 to 1.00g of oleic acid with the addition of
15 to 30g of emulsifier
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
150g of crystallized phenol
50g of copper sulphate
20g orange 2 (ss-naphthol orange)
1g of rhodamine
36 liters of water.
The invention also relates, as stated above, to a device for the simultaneous spinning of the lead and of the synthetic wood casing. It has already been proposed to make pencils of this kind by stretching the material used to make the casing through a thread concentric with a guide tube of a prefabricated lead or of a plastic mass intended for form the mine.
In these devices, the lead or the tube receiving the plastic mass intended to form the lead opens inside the interior chamber of the nozzle intended for the formation of the casing, so that the plastic mass under pressure intended for forming the envelope envelopes and carries with it the lead or the mass intended to form the latter. The result is that the plastic mass forming the envelope is brought into contact with the mine at a time when this mass has not yet reached its final section. This necessarily results in a deformation of the mass forming the mine, the section of the mine being narrowed and its position in the casing being off-center as a result of the pressure differences to which the two masses are subjected at their confluence in the nozzle.
We know that pencils with an off-center lead and an irregular section as well as a casing of variable density are unsaleable, for which the pencils produced until now by spinning plastic masses have not been able to enter current practice.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The process on which the device according to the invention is based for the manufacture of rods of this type by simultaneous extrusion of the casing and of the lead through a double die makes it possible to remedy all the above drawbacks and it is characterized by the milk that the mass intended to form the envelope is first compressed under a uniform pressure in all directions until it presents a section approximately equal to its final section and that it is then 're- stride around the mass forming the mine so as to be extruded together therewith forming a single strand.
,
By virtue of this procedure, feed pressures are obtained which are uniformly distributed over the entire section of the nozzle openings so that off-centering of the lead or a fragility of the casing caused by a non-density. , uniform of the material.
.
The mass of the envelope coats in a perfectly regular manner the mass forming the mine and is secured therewith under the action of pressure, giving rise to a compact object, so that any subsequent release of the mine , that is to say a slip thereof in use with respect to the envelope is eliminated with certainty.
The process according to the invention has the further advantage of making unnecessary any pre-molding of the material forming the lead and of allowing the raw rods to be obtained in a single operation. The raw product can then be processed. in the usual way by drying, cutting, sanding, screwing, etc. The process according to the invention makes it possible to use all the usual masses used in the manufacture of leads, in particular for pencils, graphite, the. 9 colored pencils and ink pencils.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
As shown in Figures 1 to 3, the device used for the simultaneous extrusion of the mine and the casing is constituted by a casing-casing '1 in which is introduced a nozzle 2 and a funnel or fi- lière 3. The nozzle 2 comprises an axial bore 4 intended for the passage of the mass forming the mine, as well as bores arranged in a circle concentric with the bore 4 and intended for the passage of the mass based on wood fiber.
The outlet openings of the bores 5 open into the cone 6 of the funnel 3 to which is connected the outlet channel 7, the section of which is greater than the central bore 4. As shown in FIG. 1, the central bore 4 leading the mass forming the mine - and the cone 6 bringing the mass of the casing out substantially at the same place in the outlet channel 7, of sorb that, the mass forming the casing is placed in the presence of the mass forming the mine after having been compressed by a uniform pressure to a section approximately equal to the final section.
When the mass'pâteuse forming the lead is pushed back through the bore 4 at the same time as the fibrous mass is pushed through the bores 5, these two masses exit together through the discharge channel 7 of the die 3, the mass forming the mine constituting the core of the fibrous mass which it completely envelops. The resulting rod is dried, sanded and painted, and can then be cut to form pencils of suitable length.
According to the improved embodiment of the device, shown in Figures 4 to 6, the reciprocal positions of the dies 2 and 3 can be adjusted extremely precisely in the axial direction. For this purpose, the outer casing-sleeve 1 is provided with a thread on which cap nuts 8, 9 are engaged making it possible to block the dies in the adjusted position, the nut 8
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
door for this purpose on a threaded ring 12 in which is engaged the nozzle 2, while the nut 9 is applied on an epquelement of the die 3. As in the case of the nozzle 4 has a central bore 10 receiving the mass intended to form the mine, this drilling being continued by an extrusion channel 4 of smaller diameter.
The wood fiber-based mass forming the envelope of the pencil is pushed back as before by bores 5 arranged regularly in a circle concentric with the bore 10. The die 3 has at the end of the conical funnel 6 a chamber of cylindrical pressure 11 in which the mass based on wood fiber which is guided along the elongated end of the nozzle 2, forms a tube receiving the mass forming the lead which is expelled through the channel 4 of the nozzle 2. After passing through the chamber 11, the outlet channel de'la die 3 narrows en'7 to the final diameter, the tube formed by the fibrous mass being uniformly applied to the central mine and leaving the. die 3 in the form of a continuous rod forming the raw crayop.
The plastic mass based on wood fiber, as well as the mass intended to form the mines are forced through the nozzle 2 by means of any suitable press possibly fitted with heating devices allowing the extrusion to be carried out. hot which is necessary for certain qualities of pencils,
FIG. 7 shows a particularly advantageous embodiment of the press serving to feed the double nozzle according to the invention,
This press comprises a body 23 on which are provided two Archimedes 'screws 24 and 25 having respectively a right pitch and a left-handed pitch the' 'body 23 being able to move axially on a fixed central core' 22 which the sup- door and which is provided with a central bore,; 21, The cylindrical support core 22 has threaded ends 26, 26 '
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
and radial bores 27, 27 'made in the vicinity of the threaded ends and opening into the central bore 21.
The thread 26 serves to receive a nozzle 28 for the formation of mines, while the thread 26 'receives, in the case where the lead is spun at the same time as the casing, a threaded plug 29 or a pressure gauge, and in the In the case of the manufacture of pencils using prefabricated leads, a feed hopper which can also be used in the case where a prefabricated lead has to be reinforced by adding a plastic mass. The group of radial holes 27 'ensures the arrival at the hole 21 of the pasty mass forming the lead, while the second group of radial holes
27 lubricates the inner rolling surface of the body; 13 of the screw, Due to its symmetrical construction, the support core 22 can be turned end to end.
At its end near the extrusion mouth
30, the body 23 of the screw press ends in a sec .. tion of a diameter equal to that of the screw, while on the contrary the body 23 has at its other end a. narrowing in which openings are made
31 through which the upset material enters the radial bores 27 '. In the center of body 23 of the press,. between the two, via 24 and 25, there is a drive device. The drive member 32, for example a pinion, a tangent wheel or a pulley, can be fitted onto the press body 23 and secured in rotation therewith by means of a key 33.
The drive member 32 is able to move axially by the ball bearings 34, 34 ', in the inner races of which the press body 23 is also fitted and which each support one of the linked halves. 35, 36 of the housing of the press, Each of the parts 35 36 of the housing comprises a supply pipe 37, 38 corresponding to the screws 24, 25, each of these pipes being

provided with an individual delivery device, for example a screw 39, 40 or a delivery piston.
on the front end of the part 35 of the casing is fixed the extrusion mouth 30 on which is screwed a cap nut 41 making it possible to adjust the gap to the socket 28 intended for the formation of the mine and 'ne the nozzle 42 guided in the mouth 30 and on which is applied the nut 41. The second part 36 to the housing is closed by a threaded plug 45 in which is (; en. tré the core-support 2d and against which is cubed the end of the body 23 with the press. The other end of the body
23 of the pressa is fitted to the flange of the extrusion mouth 30.
The core 2 is prevented from being replaced axially by the nozzle 26 and by the oouchon 29 or by the part of the press which is screwed into the legacy 26 '.
The nozzles 28 and 42 of the mouthpiece (the extrusion
30 'are interchangeable and can be adapted at cost to the shapes of the rods desired. The support core @ 2, the holes 21, 27, 27 'of which must be adapted to the diameter of the mine, is also interchangeable. Finally, the body 23 of the press can also be replaced by another whose screws 24,25 have a cross section. By making the body 23 of the press in two parts which can be coupled approximately in the median plane of the driving member 32, for example by means of claws, one obtains the possibility of reducing the number of spare screws.
Apart from these arrangements intended to adjust the dimensions of rods manufactured using this device, the press according to the invention makes it possible to control the discharge pressure values exactly in service and to adjust these pressures by modification of the flow rates of the delivery devices 39, 40 as well as by the adjustment of the cap nut 41 of the extrusion nozzle.
