<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Manufacture of folding boxes.
The present invention relates to a method and a machine for continuously manufacturing folding boxes from a web of paper which advances in a continuous motion. The method of the invention differs from the methods known heretofore in the first place in that a forming element first penetrates a part of the web of paper at a shallow depth into a folding chamber. U shape, then a portion of the paper strip containing this part is detached from the strip, and the forming element penetrates this portion into the folding chamber to the depth corresponding to that of the box which '' it is desired, then the protruding portions on both sides of the bending chamber are clamped against each other and glued or welded at the same time,
then the vertical portion thus formed on each side is folded back
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
laterally and comes to rest on the box thus formed, which together with the forming element exits from the folding chamber, then is detached from this element or drawn from it.
The machine which is used for the application of the new manufacturing process is characterized in principle by several bending chambers which receive a continuous circular movement with bending and welding jaws controlled at the rate of operations, and by a number of elements of formation equal to that of the folding chambers, which rotate at the same rate as the chambers following a circumference concentric with that of the chambers, and always enter and exit the same folding chamber.
According to a preferred embodiment, the folding chambers are arranged on the periphery of a circular wheel, called the wheel of the folding chambers, and the forming elements are each arranged on an axis inclined at 45 on the worm. - ticale, which can oscillate, 180 from the operating position to the extraction position on a rotating support, said support wheel. The support wheel also comprises knife supports movable in the vertical direction and serving to detach from the paper web the portion of paper to be introduced into the corresponding folding chamber.
The number and distribution of the knives are chosen so that there is always a knife between two contiguous folding chambers. All the knives are actuated by a command and the same applies to the two movements of the forming elements, that is to say of the oscillation movement and of the entry and exit movement. For the oscillation movement and for the entry and exit movement of the training elements there are respective controls which control the corresponding movements of all the training elements. This control can be mechanical, electrical,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
hydraulic or combined.
According to the invention, the control is mechanical and is carried out by means of cams. Three cams preferably arranged concentrically are provided for this purpose, one of which controls the oscillation movement of the forming elements, the second the entry and exit movement and the third the movement of the knives. . All the cams are covered by the support wheel, which preferably is in the form of a casing or cap.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the folding chambers and the support wheel are integral and can rotate around a common fixed column.
The machine constructed according to the invention makes it possible to manufacture 160 boxes per minute, without risk of disturbing its operation. It operates in a fully automatic manner and requires little supervision.
Further details of the invention will become apparent from the description given below of an exemplary embodiment shown schematically in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 shows partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section the upper part of the machine which comprises the wheels of the folding and support chambers, FIG. 2 is a schematic plan view of the wheels of the folding and supporting chambers, FIG. 3 is a schematic perspective view of part of the folding chamber wheel with the paper web arriving there and several finished boxes to be fed by a conveyor belt, FIGS. 4 to 7 schematically represent the various gluing or welding operations and the folding of the edges of the folding boxes, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
fig.
8 is a plan view of part of the wheel of the folding chambers with a device limiting the cutting length of the paper web.
The machine shown by way of example comprises a frame (not shown) and a fixed column 1 on which a so-called support wheel 2 is rotatably mounted, being actuated in a known manner (not shown) and secured to a wheel 3 known as the folding chambers arranged above it. The wheel of the folding chambers 3 has on its periphery several uniformly distributed folding chambers 4, sixteen in number in the exemplary embodiment shown.
Forming elements 5 equal in number to that of the folding chambers enter in a manner described in detail later in the folding chambers at the time of forming the folding boxes and exit once these boxes have been formed.
The machine is constructed so as to always make the same forming element cooperate with the same bending chamber 4. As a result, adjusting members of the two elements allow them to cooperate with the necessary precision.
Each forming element 5 is mounted on a support 6 which ends at the bottom with a journal 7 of circular section, rotatably mounted in the support wheel 2 in a position inclined at 45 relative to the vertical axis of rotation 1.
Each journal 7 contains inside a push rod 8 movable in the direction of the axis. The movement along the axis of the push rod 8 is transmitted to the support 6 and consequently to the forming element 5, which consequently enters the corresponding bending chamber 4 during the up and down movement of the push rod. thrust 8. The aforementioned movement of the push rod 8 is caused by a cam 9 mounted concentrically with respect to the rotation column 1. The movement along the axis of the push rod 8 is transmitted to the support 6 and pa.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
following the training element 2 by interposed elbow levers (not shown).
But it can also be transmitted by toothed wheels or hydraulically.
The lower end of the rotational journal 7 comprises a bevel wheel 10 in engagement with a toothed sector 11 coupled via a rotational axis 12 with a lever 13 which carries a roller 14 which rolls on the periphery of a cam 12 arranged concentrically with respect to the rotation column 1 and to the cam 9. During this movement, the rotation journal 7 rotates around its longitudinal axis in its bearing under the action of the toothed sector 11 and the wheel conical 10 so as to bring the forming element 5, once out of the bending chamber 4, into the position A shown in dotted lines on the pin 1. The forming element has thus oscillated at an angle of 180.
This oscillating movement is shown in fig. 1 with the dotted arrows 16, 17 and 18 and brings up the training element ¯5. below the strip of paper which arrives in a continuous movement. The web of paper can therefore be fed into the machine at the point where the forming elements oscillate, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The oscillating movement described above can of course be caused in a way other than by cams and toothed wheels. It is important, however, that the forming elements 5 oscillate about an axis inclined at 45 from the vertical, preferably at an angle of 180 from their operating position, so as to deviate thereby. of the path followed by the strip of paper 19 to be introduced into the machine and to be taken out with the machine limits box.
The support wheel 2 also contains several vertically movable knives 20. Their number is chosen so as to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
clamp a knife between two neighboring folding chambers. Each knife 20 is disposed on a rod 21. The corresponding rod, movable vertically, is guided in the support wheel 2 and is coupled with a lever with two arms 22 rotatably mounted in the support wheel 2 and comprising at one at its ends a roller 23 which rolls on a cam 24 arranged concentrically with respect to the rotation column 1 and to the two cams 9 and 15.
The various knives 20 thus arranged receive an upward and downward movement while the support wheel 2 rotates along the portion of the cam on which the roller rolls and consequently detaches from the strip of paper 19 a portion of suitable length. . The knives can of course be actuated and arranged in a manner other than that shown and described.
So-called folding and welding jaws correspond to the various folding chambers 4 of the wheel of the folding chambers; that is, to each bending chamber 4. correspond two pairs of respective jaws 25 and 26 arranged above and below the support wheel. We see on the machine of fig.1 only one of the upper jaws and one of the lower jaws of each pair of jaws of a bending chamber. These respective pairs of jaws 25 and 26 are actuated by arms 27, 28. The arms 28 correspond to the pairs of jaws disposed below the wheel of the folding chambers and the arms 27 to those which are above.
There are a number of arms 27,28 equal to that of the pairs of jaws 25,26 The arms 27,28 are applied by the intermediary of rollers 29,30 against the periphery of the corresponding cams 31,32 The two cams are integral with the fixed rotating column 1. A third cam 33 arranged above these two cams serves to control the clamping movement of one of the upper jaws of each pair 25 in the direction of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
support wheel 3. For this purpose, a rotary lever 34 corresponds to each pair of upper macho: '33 25 and carries at one of its ends a roller 35 which rolls on the cam 33. This lever 34 is resiliently mounted by a spring 36 relative to the arm 27 and can rotate with it.
It exerts a thrust on the end 37 of the arm 27 and consequently according to the control position of the cam 33 on the upper jaw of the corresponding pair of jaws 25 in the direction of the wheel of the folding chambers 3.
The boxes are made in the following way with the machine described above:
The strip of paper 19, which arrives approximately tangentially on the wheel of the folding chambers, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, is first pushed a certain distance from its end by a forming element 2 to a shallow depth into the corresponding folding chamber 4. To match the length of the portion to be peeled off from the paper web to that determined by the pressure exerted on the web, the depth to which the paper web is pushed into the folding chamber at the beginning is limited by a pusher 38 which further serves as an extractor from the box.
A pusher 38 corresponding to each folding chamber 4 is elastically guided in the wheel of the folding chambers 3 and its movement along the axis can be adjusted by a stop 39 movable in a guide 40. The position of the stop 39 can be adjusted. by means of a rotating eccentric 41. '
The depth of penetration of the web of paper into the folding chambers is therefore first limited by the pusher 38. This depth of penetration is adjusted according to the effective length of the portion of paper which lies between the various knives, and the length of the portion of paper determined by the pressure exerted on the web is regulated by
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
there, the adjustment position of the stop 39 of the pusher 38, which thus penetrates more or less deeply into the bending chamber.
This adjustment can be carried out automatically by means of a known photoelectric control, and therefore the length of the portion of the detached paper is equal to that which results from the pressure.
After the paper has been pushed by the forming element into the folding chamber 4 to the desired depth, one of the knives 20 detaches it from the web of paper 19, so that between the knives is obtained which overlap. find on each side of the respective folding chamber 4. the desired length of paper. The movement of the knives is controlled by the cam 24 via the lever 22.
The paper is then pushed all the way by the forming element 5 into the folding chamber 4, undergoes the folding operation on the forming element 2., Is welded there and the sealing flaps are then folded down. on the box.
These folding, welding and folding operations are carried out as shown in fig. 4 to 7 as follows:
Fig. 4 shows the starting position of two bending and welding jaws 25 situated above the wheel of the bending chambers As can be seen, the two jaws 25 rest on the outer face of protruding portions 42. upward above the wheel of the folding chambers 3 of the paper folded in a U-shape by the forming elements 5. The folding jaws 25 approach each other and thus clamp together the portions 42, as shown in figure 5. Since these portions are covered on their faces directed towards one another with a layer of glue and that the jaws are heated, the portions 42 are glued or weld at the same time.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Then the two jaws 25 come to the left in the position of FIG. 6, thus folding to the left the vertical portion or folding flap thus formed and exerting pressure on the right jaw against the box
The right jaw 25 then returns to the right in the position of FIG. 4 and as the jaws 26 arranged below the wheel of the folding chambers 3 (and not shown in FIGS. 4 to 7) perform the same movements, the ,. folding box is finished.
These movements are controlled by the cams 31, 32 and 33.
Then the forming element 5 comes out of the folding chamber,
4 and the extractor 38 pushed forward by the spring which surrounds it, causes the box with the forming element 2 to come out and therefore prevents it from remaining in the folding chamber. Could-. the forming element rotates 180 and comes to position A in fig. 1 where the extractors 43..44. detach it from the nucleus, as indicated by positions B and C in fig. 1. To operate the extractors 43,44 the bearing surface of the rotary journal 7 comprises a profiled ring 45 which cooperates with a lifting pin 46 mounted in the supporta of the forming element 5 and movable along its axis.
This stud acts via a rotary pushing element 47 on a lifting stud 48 which, depending on its raised position, the extractor 43 above the forming element 5.
The thrust element 47 is fixed on a rotation axis 49 integral with the extractor 44 which is therefore also lifted by the lifting pin 46.
When the rotary journal ¯? oscillates and as a result the forming element 5 leaves its operating position and rotates 180 out of the reach of the paper web 19 and the machine, the lifting pin 46 slides on the profile ring 45, thus actuating the 'extractor. Once the slack
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
@ oscillation completed, that is to say in position A in fig. 1, the finished box is on the forming element 5 and the extractors 43,44 press against the box.
The same movement which causes the forming elements 5 to penetrate into the folding chambers 4 has the effect of bringing the forming element 2 into position B of FIG. 1, so that the extractors come behind the edge of the box and press laterally against the forming element.
Then the forming element 5 returns to the top in position C of FIG. 1 and the box comes off. The movements described above (positions A, B, C) are carried out sideways, always at the same point. However, the various positions are shown next to each other, to make the operation easier to understand.
The detached boxes arrive on a conveyor belt (fig. 3) which drives them to their destination point.
The operations described above are repeated continuously for each folding chamber and for each forming element.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown and described. The embodiments of the various operations can be varied in various ways, while remaining in accordance with the fundamental principle of the invention.
