<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EXEMPLE I.
Composition chimique de l'acier :
EMI3.4
C 0,18%; Mn 0,26%; Si 1,2%; Cr 1,8%; Mo 0, ' ,, V 0, 5.
EMI3.5
à- 13 ... 130 kg par mm2 (charge de rupture) c- 0,2 = 110 kg par mm2 ( limite élastique)
HB = 360 (dureté)
Rupture fragile.
EMI3.8
A 20 C.- @ B = 110 kg par mm2 (charge de rupture)
EMI3.9
,- 0,2 = 92 kg par mm2 (limite élastique)
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
DUALUMIN).

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to earth steels and alloys, more particularly to types of ferrous alloys having, when in equilibrium, a ferritic, ferrito-pearlitic or pearlitic structure.
Alloys of these types can be classified into two different groups, on the one hand, the group of ferrous alloys having a low content of constituents other than iron (so-called low-grade steels) and, on the other hand, the group of high-grade ferrous alloys. The main elements of the last group are chromium and / or molybdenum.
As examples of steels belonging to the first group, the following alloys, which are well known in the art, can be listed.

The alloys listed have one drawback which is common to all. In fact, it is not possible, by any known heat treatment, to obtain the optimum properties, especially as regards the creep resistance, without at the same time determining, on the one hand, an increase in the resistance. to deformation, that is to say to obtain a hardness so high that they become difficult to machine, and, on the other hand, to present a marked bragility.
For this reason, it has been found, in most cases, to be content with a resistance much lower than the maximum creep resistance possible.
Even if the hardness (resistance to deformation) is lowered, by a suitable and well-chosen heat treatment up to an admissible value, being satisfied with a creep resistance at the same time reduced, the alloys in question all the same having a poor aptitude (brittleness) to thermal and mechanical stresses of long duration.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by modifying the chemical composition of the types of alloys considered without resulting therefrom other drawbacks such as, for example, a reduced resistance to scale or, in a way. general, decreased resistance to corrosion.
The method, 'object of the invention, which makes it possible to achieve the intended object consists basically in adding to all the alloys, belonging to the types indicated above by way of example, elements belonging to the group of elements which have the property of forming or stabilizing the gamma structure, for example Cu and Co. The content of these elements can be up to 5%.
In most cases, a content of 0.1% of elements from the group capable of forming the gamma structure, such as Cu and / or 06 - is sufficient to completely avoid the appearance of brittleness, especially if the alloy contains Ni. If nickel is present, care must be taken that its content does not exceed 5% since high Ni contents decrease the resistance to scale and corrosion in the alloys in question which do not have an austenitic structure. By bringing the addition of Co and / or Cu up to 1.5%, a good result is obtained in most cases, even if Ni is not present.
Higher levels of Co Cu and others apply only in cases where
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
wants to compensate for the brittleness or hardness produced by other measurements or to neutralize the unfavorable influence of high contents of the elements of the group which forms or stabilizes the alpha structure.
Thus, as it follows from the above, very low additions of Co, and / or Cu effectively lower the tendency to brittleness and, in practically all the cases examined, a content of between 0.1 and
EMI3.1
0.5% cl and / or Co (Ni less than 0.3%) was sufficient. An additional addition of elements stabilizing or forming the alpha structure such as Si, Cr, ¯'P, Ti, etc. requires an increase in the contents of Clo, Cu and possibly Ni to compensate for the appearance of brittleness, By variations

Another factor of variation of the elongation coefficients

and strizction for a given alloy consists in carrying out a heat treatment, so as to obtain bainite (intermediate structure) in the basic structure, as shown in Swedish patent application No. 7489/1948 relating to the transformation of steels of the present invention in the field of intermediate structure or bainite. It is also possible to eliminate the brittleness determined by the transformation in the bainite range by adding Cu and / or Co, optionally accompanied by Ni.
The following examples are given to show more precisely the influence of the chemical composition on the properties of steels according to the present invention during heat treatments.
EXAMPLE I.
Chemical composition of steel:

(In the present application, the term “striction” is understood to mean the contraction measured over the section and not over the diameter).
EMI3.7
After an addition of 0.15% of Geo or Ou or of Co + Cu = 0.15%, the steel exhibited the following properties:
EMI3.8
A 20 C.- @ B = 110 kg per mm2 (breaking load)
EMI3.9
, - 0.2 = 92 kg per mm2 (elastic limit)
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
HB = 300 (hardness) with greater elongation at break.
Creep tests with rupture, at 600 C and under a load of 28 kg / mm2: Rupture after 500 hours: ductile rupture elongation at rupture of 5% and necking of 12%.
After an additional addition of Co, Cu and Ni so that the alloy contains: 0.15% Cu + 015% Co + 0.15% Ni, the following values were obtained: At 20 C.-
9 B = 85 kg per mm2 (breaking load)
0.2 = 76 kg per mm2 (elastic limit)
HB 250 (Hardness) with ductile fracture.
Creep tests with rupture, at 600 C and under a load of 28 kg per mm2: Rupture after 650 hours: ductile rupture, elongation of 15% and necking of 60%.
- Further additions of Co + Or therefore determine an increase in elongation and necking at the same time as a decrease in creep resistance and hardness.
The resistance to scale in all the cases mentioned above was 100%.

As has already been said, the brittleness of steels having a bainite structure can be neutralized more exactly compensated by an addition of Cu and Co and by limited Ni contents. Conversely, the bainitic structure can be applied to reduce the elongation if the addition of elements which lower the brittleness is too great.
This does not mean that we can counterbalance the brittleness only by modifying the heat treatment, that is to say by developing a given quantity of bainite in the structure while maintaining the quality of the creep resistance, without necessary tenerus of Co Cu and possibly Ni are present. It is necessary that at least one of these elements be present in the composition of the steel to obtain the desired effect, that is to say the neutralization of the brittleness.
It can be said that the brittleness of heat-resistant pearlitic or ferritic steels is due to its precipitation in the crystal lattice. For this reason, it can be assumed, at least as a working hypothesis, that the reaction against the brittleness obtained by small additions of Co, Cu and optionally Ni, according to the invention, results from the elimination of precipitation at high temperatures.
At places of precipitation there occurs an increase in resistance to deformation or an increase in hardness or, in other words, the network exhibits a state of elastic internal stresses of the same kind as that experienced in light alloys which contain Cu (such as for example
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
DUALUMIN). The inventor has succeeded in demonstrating the existence of this phenomenon also in austenitic steels, according to Swedish patent application No. 4953/49. The phenomenon called in Germany "Aushârtung", in Sweden "Aterställber aldring" and in France "Structural hardening" is considered as a kind of aging which is characterized as follows.
After the first ordinary treatment, i.e. after heating to a high temperature followed by cooling in this case relatively slow cooling or in stages with isothermal transformation - very low resistance to deformation is obtained (a very small hardness). By an income, it can be increased to the desired values. With regard to pearlitic or ferrito-pearlitic steels, it is very difficult to observe this effect, because it is hidden in the phenomena due to the transformation of austenite. But in ferritic steels, it can be observed and studied without difficulty because there is no transformation of the austenite.
If we start from erlitic or ferrito-pearlitic steels and if we add to the composition of these steels elements which form or stabilize the alpha structure, particularly Si and Ti or Va, Ta, Nb, W and Mo in proportions such that the structure becomes predominantly or completely ferritic, the phenomenon of the state of internal elastic tensions appears clearly, as the following example shows:
A steel with the following chemical composition:
C Si Mn Cr Mo W V T Al 0.18 1.8 0.35 1.7 0.72 0.50 0.5 2.1 0.72 exhibits none; increase in hardness after application of all possible heat treatments, such as for example after heating between 840 and 1260 C and cooling at all possible speeds or in stages, or with an isothermal transformation, and no more after income.
Hardness obtained: HB = 160 - 180 If we add only 0.4% of Co + Or (+ Ni) the hardness varies according to the following table:

From this table, it emerges that the steel has, in the cooled state, a resistance to deformation which allows all possible machining work and only after tempering (which can naturally take place. during use) that the mechanical properties are changed. The values obtained correspond to the values of pearlitic or ferrito-pearlitic steels after ordinary heat treatment.
(Pearlitic steels have the lowest hardness after annealing or tempering). It is striking that the most favorable properties are obtained after heating to relatively low temperatures (980 C). Furthermore, after higher heating, a further increase in hardness occurs which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
must be due to a dissolution and precipitation of hard-soluble carbides present in the steel.
For the alloys according to the invention, there is the possibility of developing at will the maximum values of the resistance to deformation by varying the temperature and the duration of the tempering.
The steel which gave the results presented in the preceding table can reach the maximum value of hardness, namely: 370 HB by varying the tempering factors as follows:
Temperatures Time
550 C about 200 h
600 "50 h 650" 3 h
700 "40 minutes
750 "5 minutes
The ferritic steels in accordance with the invention have the following advantages:
1) Metallurgical fabrication is easy.
2) Heat treatment is easy.
3) Machining is possible in any way, before tempering.
4) By varying the chemical composition, it is possible to modify the internal voltages of the network, starting from very low values of resistance to deformation up to the highest possible values. It is thus possible to apply these steels for all construction purposes, either at room temperature or at elevated temperatures.
The high resistance to chemical attack and that to chilico-mechanical actions (corrosion, erosion and cavitation) allow their application to constructions exposed to chemical or chemical-mechanical attacks.
5) A steel which has an alpha structure (ferrite) due to elements which give the alpha structure, without the formation of carbides, and which do not take part in the formation of other carbides (such as for example Si), a such steel supports great tensions. Such a steel is advantageously applicable to constructions which are subjected to high loads.
6) No brittleness, no brittleness to impact, in particular.
