En outre, dans cette exécution connue des cylindres de laminoirs à froid, l'usage dans l'exploration prescrit de varier à l'intérieur des limites indiquées les teneurs en chrome suivant le diamètre de la table du cylindre;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
<tb> 0,75 <SEP> - <SEP> 1,30 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> carbone
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb> 0,10 <SEP> - <SEP> 0,6 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> manganèse
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb> 1,2 <SEP> - <SEP> 2,5 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> chrome
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb>
<tb> 0,05 <SEP> - <SEP> 0,25 <SEP> % <SEP> de <SEP> vanadium
<tb>

The main difficulty in the execution of cold rolling mill rolls lies in the quenching, since the gripping means must be water in order to obtain the necessary hardness, although chromium steels of this type are mainly part of the group of oil hardeners (see Rapatz "The noble steels" 1951, page 504). Therefore, for these relatively valuable tools, there is a risk of scrap quenching. With regard to temperature quench to be used, the literature indicates, among other things, the following:
In Houdremont "Science of Special Steel" 1936., page 204 it is said that the quenching of chromium steels for cold rolling mill rolls should be carried out in water at a temperature of 760-800.
In Houdremont '' Manual of the science of special steels "1943, page 653, it is stated that the hardening temperature for a chromium steel containing vanadium must be 830-850. The hardening of the chromium steels mentioned above , until now generally carried out at temperatures varying between 790-840 It is also possible to carry out a surface hardening with a torch or an induction hardening,
In addition, in this known embodiment of cold rolling mill rolls, it is customary in exploration to vary the chromium contents within the limits indicated according to the diameter of the roll table;
in this case the quenching power must increase in proportion to the increase in the chromium content (see ZVDI 1939, page 269 ff). The quenching temperature can also be varied, correspondingly, between 760 = 8509; After the thirtieth the steel is subject to an income of about 100 - 200 GB
In contrast to current practice and opinion, it has now been found that it is possible to deviate from the temperatures of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
quenching used until now and that it was possible to quench rolls of cold rolling mills, made with steels containing approximately:
EMI2.1
<tb> 0.75 <SEP> - <SEP> 1.30 <SEP>% <SEP> of <SEP> carbon

at quenching temperatures of 900 to 1050 C in flowing water; these steels then being immediately tempered Such steels may also contain, in addition to or instead of: vanadium, 0.10-0.50% molybdenum .
In cylinders hardened in the operation at 950, according to the invention, and having a diameter of 275 mm, respectively 450 mm, no defect could be observed. Examination of such a cylinder revealed for a Rockwell hardness of 66 to 60, a quenching depth of 26.5 mm or 17 mm (see drawing), while the corresponding cylinders of the current steel composition and quenched according to the current method at 840, do not exhibit a quenching depth of only 7 - 10 mm. This quenching was carried out after constant heating up to the quenching temperature. However, it is also possible to cause only the surface layer to harden at the high quenching temperature ,
while the inside of the cylinder remains cooler, i.e. at or even below the current quench temperature.
However, can the process be changed? so that the cylinder is heated, before quenching, first to very high temperatures, for example, from 1000 to 1050 C, then the temperature in the furnace is lowered to the quenching temperature from 900 to 9800, for example 9500, and that only then one proceeds to the seizure in moving water and the subsequent income.
In addition to cold rolling mill rolls, the invention can also be used for hardened, split backing roll coats, and the like. In the case of surface quenching, both quenching and quenching may be used. torch than induction hardening.
