<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Pick-up arms for phonographic devices, record players, etc.
The present invention relates to a pick-up arm for phonographs, record players and other devices of the same kind, the reading member of which is brought into contact with and / or mechanically disengaged from the disc to another recording medium. .
As is well known, in apparatus of this type, the reading member of the phonographic arm is carried by the free end of this arm and the latter in its entirety receives a lowering or raising movement around it. a horizontal axis situated near the end opposite to that carrying the reading member in order to bring the latter into contact with the disc to be played or to move it away from it.
In some cases, it may be beneficial to

codify the conditions of inertia of the arm a view in particular of improving the resistance of the arm to both vertical and lateral impacts and the aim of the invention is to produce an arm which, while meeting this concern , ensures at the same time a decrease in the energy necessary to move the reading organ from the non-hearing position to that of hearing and vice versa and to maintain it in each of these positions.
To this end, the arm which is the subject of the invention is essentially distinguished in that the reading member is mounted so as to be able to pivot about a horizontal axis located near the free end of the arm and carried by this arm. and in that the pivoting of this member is controlled by the control mechanism of the apparatus by means of a rocking lever which extends inside the arm and which at its end opposite to the member of reading is subjected to the action of an organ being in relation with this mechanism.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from two exemplary embodiments which will be explained below with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the arm in the non-hearing position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to figure
1 with the arm in the hearing position.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view intended to show the cooperation of the arm with the 00 novel mechanisms. of. In this view, some parts have been torn off.
Figure 4 relates to a variant.
In the accompanying drawings, there is shown at 1 the rotary plate and at 2 the fixed base plate.
The horizontal movements of the phonographic arm 3 are controlled by a sleeve 4 which rotates in a sleeve 5 integral with the base plate 2 and which receives its insert.

dragging by means of a lever 6 located under the fixed plate 2 and carrying a tenon 7 which enters a groove 8 formed in a toothed wheel 9 engaged with a pinion 10 fixed on a shaft forming part of the mechanism.
According to the invention, the cartridge 11 or other reading member carrying the needle or the sapphire 12 is mounted so as to be able to pivot about a horizontal axis 13 passing through the phonographic arm 3 near its free end and its pivoting. is controlled by a rod or by a lever 14 which extends inside the phonographic arm 3, is articulated at 131 on the cartridge and can receive a tilting movement about an axis 15 carried by the arm 3.
On the other hand, a rod 16 extends vertically in the sleeve 4 and can slide under the control of a cam 17 formed on the wheel 9. At its upper end, it can act on a tab 18 formed by the lever 14. .
A spring 19 is fixed on the one hand to the cartridge 11 and on the other hand to the arm 3.
In Figure 1, the various members are shown in the rest position: the lever 14 rests on the rod 16 and is in a substantially horizontal position while the cartridge 11 is kept raised.
To bring the reading member into contact with the disc at the start of the hearing, the rod 16 performs a sliding movement from top to bottom which releases the lever 14 and allows it to swing in the direction. arrow F (fig.l) around the axis 15 and allows the cartridge 11 to pivot under the action of gravity and / or the spring 19 so that the needle 12 comes into contact with the disc to

play (fig. 2).
At the end of the hearing, the cam 17 lifts the rod 16 and the latter rotates the lever 14 in the direction of the arrow F, (fig. 2) so that the cartridge is raised in the 3.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
position of Figure 1 and is held by the lever 14 resting on the rod 16.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 4, the tilting of the cartridge 11 is controlled by the intervention of a part 20 which forms part of the mechanism, which can pivot around an axis 21 and which is designed in such a way. to cause various movements such as starting the engine, centering the disc, etc.
This device is the subject of a patent application filed at the same time as this one.
In the example shown, the part 20 is provided with a ramp 25 arranged in such a manner that when it is brought into contact with the rod 16, the latter slides downwards and causes the tilting of the rod 14 in the direction of arrow F (fig. 4) and releases the cartridge. As shown in Figure 4, this. The cartridge may carry a projection 22 provided with a lug 23 on which the lever 14 supports / supports.
It will be understood that when the lever 14 is tilted in the direction of arrow F, the cartridge can tilt at 13 so that the sapphire 12 comes into contact with the record to be played, possibly being assisted, in this tilting by the spring 19.
At the end of the hearing, the ramp 25 slides the rod 16 from bottom to top, which causes the lever 14 to swing which acts on the cartridge to raise it.
The device described has the particular feature that the pivot axis 13 of the reading member can be provided in a position such that the force of inertia opposing the vertical movements of this reading member is as high as pos. - sible and that the resistance to vertical impacts is thus more considerable than in arms of the known type.
.The arm 3 will advantageously be made from ma-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
denies that its weight is as small as possible and for this purpose it may be in the form of a simple angle iron, for example with a U-profile in a light metal in which the lever 14 can be housed, which improves the resistance of the arm to impacts lateral.
The above considerations show that an arm designed under these conditions is particularly suitable for use in the case of a mechanically controlled record player mounted on a vehicle.
Another essential advantage is that the maneuvers to bring the reading member into contact position and to disengage it only require a reduced expenditure of energy easily supplied by the motor normally provided for driving the rotary table. tif.
In addition, the moving masses being reduced, the movements can take place at an accelerated rate.
