<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
18.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Method and device for shaping gear teeth or the like".
The present invention relates to the shaping of gear teeth, shaft keys or similar parts of similar workpieces, by a method and apparatus of the kind wherein the shaping is performed by a rotating grinding tool. or milling having a helical periphery
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and where the workpiece is rotated, during the shaping operation, at the speed that it would have had due to the engagement of the workpiece with a tangent screw of the same pitch as the tool .
One of the disadvantages of the methods previously employed for the aforementioned purposes, has been the need to provide a complex mechanism to allow the wear of the tool to be uniformly distributed over the entire axial length of the tool, which remedies the localization. wear and tear.
The object of the present invention is to enable the desired distribution of tool wear to take place in a simplified manner.
The invention consists of a method of the aforesaid kind, in which the relative advance movement of the workpiece and the tool is effected in a direction inclined on the axis of rotation of the workpiece , and wherein the axis of rotation of the tool is inclined to the direction of the feed movement and is substantially normal to the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
The invention also comprises a method according to the preceding paragraph, in which the device intended to impart the rotary movement to the workpiece comprises a pair of mutually meshed gear members, one of which is capable of sliding relative to the other.
Further, the invention includes a machine substantially as described below, for performing
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the operations defined above.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a section in front elevation of a machine according to the invention, for grinding the teeth of a single spur gear.
Fig. 2 is a section in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan.
Reference is now made to the drawings.
The machine comprises a frame 1, a guide 2 intended to carry a horizontally movable slide 3, the latter being moved along the guide by a suitable mechanism (not shown). The bench comprises or carries a bracket 4 on which is provided a vertical guide 5 which carries a slide 6 on which is mounted an electric motor 7 intended to turn the helical grinding wheel 8 fixed to one end of the rotary shaft 9 of the engine. Any suitable device (not shown) is combined with the guide 5 to raise and lower the slide 6.
On the slide 3 is mounted a -shaft 10 to which is fixed the workpiece 11, the shaft 10 being carried at one end by a bearing 12 and, at the other end, by a tailstock 13. The shaft 10 can be connected by a clutch 14 to a shaft 15 which is preferably surrounded by a friction brake 16 intended to damp transient fluctuations in the movements of the shaft, and this shaft is connected by a train of 17 speed change gears to another shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
18.
In the particular arrangement shown, the shaft 9 of the motor is disposed at an angle of .80 on the longitudinal center line of the slide 3, the axis of the workpiece shaft 10 being disposed normally to the axis of tree 9.
Shaft 15 is coaxial with shaft 10 and shaft 18 is parallel to shaft 15.
In the machine bed is mounted a long gear 19 with helical teeth, carried by a shaft 20.
Its axis is parallel to the longitudinal center line of the guide 2 and, in the present example, its teeth are inclined at 10 on its axis. A corresponding helical pinion 21 engages with this pinion; Pinion 21 is carried by a shaft 22 from the slide 3, the shaft 22 being connected to the aforementioned shaft 18 by a pair of bevel gears 23.
The wheel 19 is actuated by an electric motor 24 via a tangent worm reduction train 25 and a gear train 26. Preferably, a flywheel 27 is combined with said tangent worm gear. to minimize transient fluctuations in motion.
The motors 7 and 24 are AC synchronous motors and, to prevent the relative movements of their rotors, the latter are coupled by coaxial shafts 28, 29, a clutch 30 and bevel gears 31, 32.
In short, the mode of action of the machine is such
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that, as a result of the linear movement of the slide 3, the entire length of the workpiece is dependent on the action of the grinding wheel and, due to the inclination of the axis of the workpiece on the direction of movement of the slide, the workpiece has a component of movement parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel, the magnitude of this component being such as to cause the workpiece to move across any the axial length of the grinding wheel, which ensures uniform wear over the entire length of the grinding wheel propeller.
The kinematics of the operation of the machine will now be explained in more detail.
Suppose that the grinding wheel is replaced by an identically similar tangent screw and that there is a finished workpiece, mounted in position, but which is not linked to one of the associated gears as it was. said, the slide 3 being stationary. It is evident that when the tangent screw turns, a corresponding rotation is imparted to the workpiece. Suppose now that the tangent screw is held stationary and that a linear motion is given to the workpiece.
It is also evident that this movement will give rise to a rotary movement of the workpiece, this movement being called compensatory rotation. It follows that, if the tangent screw is rotated and the workpiece simultaneously receives linear motion relative to the tangent screw, the workpiece not only receives the above-mentioned rotational motion, but also the compensatory rotary motion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
For the purposes of the invention, it is required that, during the linear movements of the slide 3, the workpiece not only receives the normal rotary movement that it would receive (when stationary) from a corresponding tangent screw. grinding wheel, but also the aforementioned compensatory rotary motion, and this last requirement is satisfied by the inclination of the teeth of the helical pinion 19.
Another requirement, which must be satisfied, is that the same machine be able to work workpieces of different diameters. It is obvious that the speed of rotation which can be communicated to the workpiece by a tangent screw depends on the diameter of the workpiece. It is also evident that the compensatory movement which must be imparted to all the workpieces must be inversely proportional to their diameters, when expressed in degrees of rotation, and uniform in the case of peripheral speeds. Accordingly, it is necessary to provide that the rotational speed of the workpiece to be processed by the grinding wheel can be changed in a manner appropriate to the diameter of the workpiece.
This requirement is met by combining the gears 19, 21, a gear train 19, and another gear change gear 17, intended to transmit the movement of the gear 19 to the shaft 10.
Although, in the foregoing, the description has been limited to a machine intended for grinding
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
gears, it is understood that the invention is applicable in a substantially similar manner to a machine for milling gear teeth by a rotary milling tool, or what is called a screw milling cutter, with teeth. cutters arranged helically.
Further, the invention is not limited to a method and a device for processing gear teeth, since it can also be applied to shaping shaft keys, or to perform other similar grinding operations. or milling using a grinding wheel or helical milling tool.
