<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The object of the invention is above all to improve the maneuverability and the general performance of an airplane while simplifying the control devices. Its purpose is, more particularly, to allow an airplane to fly normally and to land with a very low angle of incidence, or substantially equal to zero, of its wing.
In what follows, the expression “horizontal tail unit” will be used to designate the part of the tail unit capable of giving rise to forces exerted in the vertical plane of symmetry of the airplane, whether this part presents or not a dihedral, even pronounced as in the case of so-called “butterfly” tailings.
The invention consists, in general, in having recourse to means for adjusting the lift, established along the trailing edge of the wing to replace the aft elevator.
More specifically, the object of the invention is an airplane provided with means for adjusting the lift extending, in substance, over the entire length of the trailing edge of the wing, from one end of the wing. wing to the other, with a maneuvering member controlled by the pilot, to actuate said adjustment means, as well as a horizontal tail unit which is not moved by this maneuvering member and which occupies such a position, while being Proportioned in such a way with respect to the wing, that the neutral point of the airplane is behind the midpoint of the chord of the wing instead of being in front of this point as before. The means for adjusting the lift may consist of flaps hinged to the trailing edge of the wing and movable up and down in order to vary the lift.
These means may, however, also be constituted by means suitable for emitting propellant jets through a long and narrow nozzle which extends along the trailing edge of the wing and which is provided with means suitable for deflecting the jets. up or down in order to vary the lift. It is also possible to use a combination of such a jet device and articulated shutters, all as described in Belgian patent N 527,857 by the Applicant.
Preferably, the flaps or the thruster jets or the combination of all the flaps and jets can be moved, either up or down, along the whole wing, or down, one step. side of the longitudinal axis of the airplane, and in the opposite direction, on the other side of said longitudinal axis, to replace the elevator rudder and to reproduce the effect of the flaps and ailerons.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in schematic perspective, an aircraft constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 shows, on a larger scale and in cross section along the chord II-II fig. 1, the trailing edge of the wing.
Figs. 3 and 4 show, on a larger scale and in perspective, the controls of the airplane.
The aircraft shown in fig. 1 comprises the fuselage 1, the wings 2 and the horizontal stabilizer 3, as well as the usual rudder 3a.
Means for adjusting the lift comprising the wing flaps 4, described more particularly with the aid of FIG. 2, extend along the full span of the trailing bores of the wings, essentially from end to end of these.
Point X is the midpoint of the chord, i.e. the center of the surface of the 2 wings and point C is the neutral point, i.e. the aerodynamic center of 1 set of the airplane, point where the resultant of the censal thrust acts on the whole airplane due to its incidence.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The surface of the horizontal stabilizer and its position relative to the wings are such that point C is behind point X instead of being placed in front of this point as before. Suitable proportions between the area of the horizontal tail, and the distance from the center of this tail to point C are such that said point C is only at a reduced distance behind point, X, for example at 55 % of the wing chord from the leading edge of the wing. For this purpose, the volume of the horizontal tail unit, i.e. the product of its area and the aforesaid distance, is approximately twice as large as the volume of the horizontal tail unit. an airplane built as usual and to which the invention is not applied.
The airplane is propelled by jets delivered by jet engines housed in the wings 2. In FIG. 1, part of the wing is torn off to show an engine 5 delivering a jet through a nozzle 6, the shape of which progressively evolves towards the rear so that the nozzle ends in a narrow opening. The nozzles of all engines are combined together to form a narrow discharge opening which substantially extends the full length of the trailing edge. The engines suck in air through intake openings in the leading edge of each wing 2.
In longitudinal section, the nozzle .6 has the shape shown in fig 2 and the tube delivers through an opening 6a which is located above the hinged wing flap 4 which can be moved angularly around the nozzle. axis of its pivot.
The assembly formed by the engines, the nozzles and the wing flaps can be constituted as explained in the prior Belgian patent N 527,857 which is discussed above. The flaps 4 may have a small width, in the direction of the rope, of about 2 to 5% of the total length of said rope.
According to one variant and in the case where the means for adjusting the lift consist solely of articulated wing flaps, with the aim of being able to give these flaps the small width indicated above, said flaps are preferably arranged so as to be able to cooperate with a slot occupying a location similar to that of FIG. 6a along the trailing edge for expelling or sucking air passing over the upper face of the flaps to achieve boundary layer control. As explained in the aforesaid prior patent, the jet follows the upper face of the shutter and is deflected when the shutter is raised or lowered.
With such an airplane, normal flight takes place with an incidence of the wings 2 approximately equal to zero, the lift being produced by the effect of the jet or other means regulating the lift. The wing flaps or deflectors of the jet then occupy their normal position as shown in fig. 2, position for which the upward force exerted on the wings during normal cruising flight is substantially equal to the weight of the aircraft.
The useful equivalent of the elevator control is obtained by moving the flaps 4 at the same time, either downwards from their normal position in order to increase the lifting force, or upwards from the normal position with a view to reducing lift, these lift control means then playing the role of elevator rudder. For lateral or transverse control, the equivalent of aileron control is obtained by moving the flaps 4 differentially, that is to say by lifting them on one side of the fuselage 1 and lowering them from the on the other side of it, together with the usual control by the rudder 3a.
During take-off and landing, the flaps 4 can be lowered very considerably, as with ordinary landing flaps, although their behavior is obviously very different since the increase in the lift coefficient n ' is not accompanied by an appreciable increase in the drag coefficient of pro

wire.
Thus all the control surfaces of the movement of the airplane are, in substance, carried out by deflecting the jet using the flaps 4, by acting on the control member of the engine power and by maneuvering the control rudder. direction 3a, the latter being the only other control surface which must. must be provided, The control surfaces of the airplane can be simplified accordingly, The horizontal stabilizer serves only as a stabilizer and, if necessary, also for centering or load distribution; to this end, sa'position angular can be made adjustable in block by pivoting.
The shutter 4 is actuated by the connecting rod 9 acting on the crank 8 (fig. 2) o As can be seen in fig. 3, the actuator, actuated by the pilot, may be the ordinary joystick 10 so arranged that it can be moved as a unit to raise or lower the flaps 4 and the jets together, and 'it can be moved angularly, using the handlebars or steering wheel 11, to actuate the shutters differentially
4. To simplify FIG. 3 which is only a diagram, only the part of the control mechanism which actuates the shutters 4 has been shown, the other components being described later with the aid of FIG. 4.
In fig. 3 the broom handle 10 can rotate in a tubular casing 12 which carries lateral supports 12a which can rotate around pivots 13, the lower end of the broom handle being fixed on the lever 14 to which the connecting rods 15 are connected. The movement of the joystick in the direction of arrow I, with a view to inclining the joystick relative to the pivots 13, gives rise to traction on the two connecting rods 15 which drive the two connecting rods 9 and the two cranks 8 to lower both shutters. When the handlebar or flywheel 11 is rotated around the axis of the joystick 10, the lever 14 is moved around this axis, which drives the groups of connecting rods 15 and 9 in opposite directions.
The connecting rods 15 can act by means of the usual common hydraulic servo-mechanisms 16 by being connected to levers 17 which are articulated, in the usual manner, to the rods 18 of distributors and to extensions of the connecting rods 9. .
In order that it can be used when necessary, for example in the event of a failure of the jet engines 5, or so that it can be used for stable flight at supersonic speed, the rear horizontal tail unit 3 comprises the usual elevator rudder 3b or is preferably made to be orientable as a whole, so as to be able to be angularly shifted by the ordinary control. For this purpose, and as shown in fig. 4, a yoke 19, supported by the pivots 13, is connected by the triangle 20, preferably directly, to the control rod 22 of the elevator or, according to a variant, by means of a servo. mechanism 21 analogous to that described above.
Lateral projections 12b, provided on the casing 12, carry the pivots 23 of a yoke 24 connected, by a rod 25, to a hydraulic lock 26, the axis of the pivots 23 being in alignment. with the ends of the lever 14 connected to the connecting rods 15. It will be seen that the members 19 to 26 are omitted in FIG. 3 and shown separately in fig. 4 to simplify the fig 3 and, for the same reason, the members 8, 8 and 16, 17, 18 are omitted in figo4. When the elevators of the horizontal stabilizer are adjusted in position when they are locked, the joystick 10 acts on the flaps 4 as described above, the pivots 13 being fixed.
A change in operation can be obtained after having given the flaps 4 a desired position, by immobilizing them with the aid of the latch 26 and releasing the elevator.
The pivots 23 are then fixed and the joystick acts by rotating around these pivots to actuate the control 20-22 of the elevator instead of acting on the control 15-9 of the flaps. Thus, for example, for a flight at supersonic speeds, the joystick acts on the elevator in the usual way for the elevator but it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
continues to differentially control the flaps 4 by the command 15-9 in order to obtain an equivalent of the aileron control, as explained above.
When the elevator is again immobilized in its fixed position for flights at a subsonic speed, the change in operation may occur again to return to the situation in which the broomstick is not acting on the elevator. the elevator but can actuate the flaps 4. The horizontal stabilizer can then still remain adjustable for centering, for example by being articulated to a support which is angularly adjustable.
The airplane which is the object of the invention is different from an airplane of the type of those called "flying wing", in which the equivalent of the horizontal tail is formed by extensions, oriented in part. towards the rear, from the tips of the wings, these extensions carrying elevators established at the trailing edge and movable differentially so as to be able to also serve as ailerons, these elevator rudders, unlike what occurs for wing lift regulators established in accordance with the invention, being only located on these extensions and not extending along the entire edge of the wing proper where most of the lift is produced.
