Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   <Desc / Clms Page number 1>

   The present invention relates to an apparatus for extrusion of mas- tic and, more particularly, to cartridges intended to contain mastic or similar substances, very viscous, and aganecée to be placed in an extrusion gun; one of its aims is to provide an improved cartridge construction.

   According to the present invention, a cartridge for containing sealants or the like, very viscous, and arranged for use with an extrusion gun, comprises a hollow cylindrical body with open ends, adapted to contain the sealant, and a suscep - tible to slide longitudinally therein under the effect of the piston rod of the pistol, said plunger comprising a pair of members in the form of opposed cups, the bases of the members in the form of cups being adjacent to each other, said plunger constituting a sealing of one end of the body before its use as a plunger, to eject the viscous material.

   The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

   Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a cartridge according to the present invention.

   FIG. 2 is a longitudinal section, on a large scale, of the drum of an extrusion gun in which the cartridge of FIG. 1 is disposed.

   Reference is first made to Figure 1 of the drawings; a cartridge for containing mastic or the like, very viscous, arranged for use in an extrusion gun, comprises a hollow cylindrical body 1 made of cardboard, fiber or the like, as described in application filed that same day, under the same name, and capable of containing mastic or a similar, very viscous substance.

   The body is closed at one end by a cover 2, easily removable, and, at the other end, by a plunger 3. This plunger 3 has the shape of a pair of members 8 and 9, in the form of an opposing bowl. , the peripheral walls of which extend outwards and inwards respectively of the body 1. This plunger 3 can be made of cardboard and can, if desired, be waxed entirely or on a half, it is that is, the cup-shaped member 8 or the cup-shaped member 9 can be waxed. If the cylindrical cartridge 1, due to the method of its manufacture, is not exactly cylindrical, it is advantageous to leave the plunger 3 unwaxed so that, under pressure, it more easily adopts the internal shape of the cartridge 1.

   When it is desired to use the filled cartridge in an extrusion gun, the cartridge is inserted into the gun, or, as in the example shown, into the drum 4 (see FIG. 2), so that a disc 10, carried by the plunger rod 5 of the gun, engages with the plunger 3. The disc 10 sits inside the peripheral wall of the cup-shaped member 8. The removable cover 2 of the cartridge is removed 'and the nozzle 6 of the gun is screwed onto the end of the drum, so that the body 1 of the cartridge is firmly gripped between a base 7 of the inner surface of the drum and the inner surface of the nozzle 6.

   It is evident that when pressure is applied to the plunger rod 5 in the forward direction, the plunger 3 moves inwardly of the body 1, which causes the mastic to be extruded through the spout 6.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 3, being flexible, tends, under pressure, to expand and ensure that the sealant escapes only a small or no quantity backwards, between the plunger and the wall of the cartridge 1. plunger with double cup-shaped member, it is ensured: the self-alignment of the plunger in the cartridge and, moreover, any backward movement, due to the pressure exerted by the putty compressed in the cartridge, is thwarted by 1 cup-shaped member 8 facing rearward.

   The actuating device for applying pressure to the plunger rod 5 is not shown in FIG. 2, but it is understood that it may comprise a known device such as, for example, a mechanical mechanism with connecting rods and a hand actuated trigger or compressed air actuator. Alternatively, the cartridge may be employed in a slatted frame type gun in which the cartridge itself serves as the gun's sole drum , a nozzle being attached to the cartridge or connected to the handle portion of the gun by a suitable frame.
