<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to the preparation of alkyl derivatives of metals
It has already been proposed to prepare tetraalkyl derivatives of lithium aluminum by reacting lithium aluminum hydride with ethylene or a monosubstituted ethylene such as propylene.
But it has been found that lithium aluminum hydride at a high purity state does not react or reacts very slowly with ethylene or mono-substituted lino ethylene to form tetraalkyl derivatives of lithium aluminum at temperatures below temperature. decomposition of lithium aluminum hydride
It has also been found that this reaction and other similar reactions using other complex hydrides proceed rapidly giving good yields of a complex alkyl when the reaction is carried out in the presence of an aluminum halide or of another Friedel-type catalyst
Craft such as zinc chloride and ferric chloride.
According to the present invention, in a process for the preparation of a complex alkyl, a complex hydride of aluminum and an alkali metal is reacted at an elevated temperature and in the practical absence of moisture and oxygen. with one or more olefins containing not more than 12 carbon atoms and corresponding to the general formula R.CH:CH2 where R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group, in the presence of a catalyst of the Friedel-Craft type, defined further.
In the present specification, the terms "complex alkyl" or "complex hydride" refer to an alkyl of a hydride in which the alkyl groups or the hydrogen atoms are combined with aluminum and an alkali metal. -
The complex hydrides of aluminum and lithium or sodium are particularly suitable for the process of the invention. It is preferred to use a complex hydride of aluminum and lithium.
The Friedel-Craft type catalyst cannot determine undesirable decomposition of the complex hydride. For example, hydrofluoric acid is not a suitable catalyst in the process of the invention.
Particularly suitable catalysts are aluminum halides; aluminum alkyl halides; zinc chloride and ferric chloride. Without being limited to a theory of the mechanism of the reaction, the Friedel-Craft catalyst is believed to exert its catalytic effect through an intermediate compound probably formed by reaction between the catalyst and the complex hydride.
If only one olefin as defined above is used in the process of the invention, a complex alkyl is obtained in which the alkyl groups are identical while with two or more olefins defined above. , the complex alkyl may contain different alkyl groups
In carrying out the process of the invention, the reagents should be substantially free from moisture and moisture and air should be excluded from the apparatus to avoid undesirable decomposition of hydride or moisture. complex alkyl.
It is also desirable to use an excess of olefin relative to the amount theoretically required to react with the complex hydride, so that the complex hydride will react completely and isolation of the complex alkyl. in practically pure form is easier.
The temperature at which the reaction is carried out is preferably not less than about 5000 so that the reaction rate is.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
reasonably fast and cannot exceed the temperature at which the complex hydride decomposes or at which loss of olefin from the complex alkyl occurs under the conditions of the reaction. For example. The tetrapropyl derivative of lithium and aluminum is stable up to 250 ° C. at atmospheric pressure, but in the presence of propylene, this derivative is stable at least up to 300 C. The tetraoctyl derivative of lithium and of aluminum is stable up to at least 250 C at atmospheric pressure.
It is best to carry out the reaction in the temperature range of 50-300 C.
If the olefin is liquid at the reaction temperature, the reaction can take place at atmospheric pressure. If the olefin is gaseous at the reaction temperature, the reaction should be carried out under elevated pressure and it has been found that a suitable pressure is that which the olefin develops at the selected temperature. However, higher pressures can be used.
Preferably, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an inert solvent such as paraffinic and alicyclic hydrocarbons. Examples of suitable solvents are n-octane, decalin and cyclohexane.
The amount of Friedel-Craft catalyst used can vary within wide limits, but should not be less than 0.1% by weight of the complex hydride used. It is preferred to employ about 5% to about 20% by weight of the complex hydride.
EXAMPLE 1.
2 g of lithium aluminum hydride, 0.1 g of aluminum chloride and 200 g of propylene are introduced into a one liter autoclave and heated at 120 ° C. for 3 hours. The reagents and the device are practically free of moisture and no air can enter the device. After cooling the reaction product and removing excess propylene, 10.4 g of the substantially pure tetrapropyl derivative of lithium aluminum is obtained in the form of colorless needle-like crystals. The yield based on 1 The lithium aluminum hydride reaches 96% of theoretical yield.
EXAMPLE 2.
10 g of lithium aluminum hydride, 0.5 g of aluminum chloride, about 100 g of propylene and 100 cm3 of cyclohexane are introduced into a one liter autoclave lined with glass and the mixture is heated to 120 C for 3 hours. After cooling, the cyclohexane is separated from the reaction product by vacuum distillation at a temperature not exceeding 50 C. The yield of the tetrapropyl derivative of lithium aluminum on the basis of lithium aluminum hydride reaches 64%. theoretical yield.
EXAMPLE 3.
2 g of lithium aluminum hydride with excess ethylene are heated in a glass-lined autoclave at 120 ° C. for 3 hours.
The tetraethyl derivative of lithium and aluminum is not obtained. The same result is obtained when the experiment is repeated in the presence of 20 cm3 of decalin as solvent.
EXAMPLE 4.
The following experiments were carried out to demonstrate the effect of catalyst and solvent on the reaction between aluminum aluminum hydride and ethylene.
In all the experiments the same quantities of re-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
active ingredients and the same reaction conditions. Thus, 2 g of lithium aluminum hydride and 0.02 g of catalyst are heated with an excess of ethylene in a glass-lined autoclave at 120 ° C. for 3 hours. In some experiments, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent, namely 20 cm3 of decalin. The results obtained are reproduced below. The tetraethyl derivative of lithium and aluminum is isolated as in Example 1 (no solvent) and in Example 2 (solvent).
