<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

It has already been proposed and used in mines of metal props in several parts, of various profiles and among others of gutter profile. In this case, most of the time the punch and the barrel both have a gutter profile and they are put under tension, while they are engaged with each other inside a lock surrounding them. two pieces of the prop, and this by means of a longitudinal wedging piece, which can be driven by the punch until it stops against a stop. As soon as this is the case, the prop loses its flexibility and becomes rigid.
Gutter profile props of this kind have the disadvantage that the tensile force of the lock is determined by the force with which the punch drives the longitudinal wedging piece.
In addition, the frictional force in the lock is exerted, in the most favorable case, on three surfaces of the punch, when the profile of the latter is "U" shaped with a web and two side wings.
We can overcome these shortcomings of gutter props by observing that a gutter profile offers a better possibility of putting under tension than by means of a longitudinal wedging piece or similar member, if the profile is given in internal gutter (most often that of the punch) a wedge-shaped section by an inclination of the wings on the Orne, in other words a divergent section profile. It is then possible to take advantage of this wedge shape of the section of the profile for the tensioning without the need for a longitudinal wedging piece.
According to the invention to put under tension the inner element of the strut against the outer element, a tension wedge is directed transversely to the longitudinal axis of the strut and is applied by its oblique lateral facings. against the inner surfaces of the inner profile flanges. The frictional force, which ensures the resistance of the prop to its load, is then exerted on the respectively internal and external surfaces of the two wings of the profile, consequently on four surfaces. Such friction on four surfaces is obtained without a longitudinal wedging piece, wedge or other similar member driven by the internal profile (punch).
Another notable advantage of the invention is that it is not necessary for the outer profile to have a gutter shape and for it to have a profile different from that of the inner profile. The outer profile can for example be tubular or box-shaped, because, unlike the old gutter profile props, according to the invention, or is not required to have a support of the inner profile against the outer profile to ensure the voltage. Depending on the shape and size of the outer profile compared to those of the inner profile, it may be advisable to interpose between the wings of the inner profile and the lock friction parts.
The appended drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the invention, namely: FIG. 1, a cross section of the prop through the lock; FIG. 2, a longitudinal section.
The punch 1 is a gutter profile with side wings 1a, 1b inclined towards each other in the form of a wedge. In the embodiment shown, the inner profile 1 is that of the punch. The barrel 2 can also have a gutter profile but, as mentioned, it can also have a tube or box profile and surround the inner profile 1 with more or less play. On the outer profile 2 of the stanchion

çon (barrel) is attached the lock belt 3, fixed for example by welding (Figure 2). The keyhole belt 3 therefore constitutes in a way the upper part of the outer element or barrel 2.
The internal contour of the keyhole belt 3 is, as can be seen in Figure 1, appropriate to the contour line of the internal profile 1 and its width in the region of the two wings la and lb thereof is strongly reinforced so that this belt is able to withstand the forces produced by the tensioning.
The lock tension 3 has an opening facing the opening of the gutter to receive a transverse wedge 4. This transverse wedge engages by its head in the gutter profile to be applied, when it is pushed in, by its wedge-shaped lateral faces, against the internal surfaces of the flanges 1a and 1b of the profile. So that the forces to be exerted from the outside on the wedge 4 for its driving in do not produce a torque around the longitudinal axis of the prop, the wedge 4 must be symmetrical in shape with respect to its longitudinal axis, such that the direction of the clamping force indicated by arrow 5 in Fig. 1 meets the longitudinal axis of the prop.
Between the wings 1a and 1b of the profile and the lock belt 3 are interposed friction liners 6, the outer surfaces 6a of which are usefully polished and greased to facilitate the insertion of the transverse corner 4. The internal surfaces 6b of the friction liners 6, on the contrary, remain raw or even are roughened in order to increase the friction and consequently the load-bearing force of the prop.
The sliding displacement of the friction liners 6 inside the lock 3 -is small, so that it is easy to construct the lock in closed form.
The vertical loads of the strut are transmitted by the sleeves and the transverse wedge 4 to the outer element of the strut or shaft.
It is recommended to give the cross corner such a slope, that it works without getting stuck on its own. To secure it in its tensioned position, a locking wedge 7 is provided which is pressed into an opening of the. corner 4 inside the lock belt 3 and which automatically adapts its position under the effect of gravity, when the transverse wedge 4 is pushed in.
When tightening the wedge 4, the latter presses from the inside against the wings 1a and 1b of the profile, which in turn transmit the tensioning pressure to the friction linings 6 and to the belt of the lock. The locking wedge 3 which slides by itself following this movement shoulders the transverse wedge 4,
To release the wedge 4 (caving in the prop), the auxiliary wedge 8 is used, which, in the same way as the locking wedge 7, engages in an opening in the transverse wedge 4 but outside the lock belt. A common elongated opening in corner 4 can be provided for the two corners 1 and 8.
When driving in the auxiliary wedge 8, it is necessary to have released the locking wedge 7. The wedge 8 determines the retraction of the transverse wedge 4. In its backward movement, the wedge 4 abuts by its stop surfaces 10 against an edge bead 11 of the wings 1a and 1b of the section and therefore positively drives the inner section in its retraction movement. The abutment surfaces 10 at corner 4 can be dispensed with .; if the corner slope of the profile of the inner part of the strut cannot by itself ensure jamming, in combination with the effect of the mentioned lubrication of the surfaces 6a.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The movement of withdrawal of the inner profile 1 is limited by stops 12 provided on the belt of lock 3. The wedge 4 may possibly have a shape such that its movement of withdrawal can continue again, once the tubes of edge of the fenders met the stops
12.
The auxiliary wedge ¯8 can be replaced by a wedge 9 interposed between the wedge 4 and the web of the gutter profile.
Optionally, in addition to the friction linings 6, it is also possible to place an intermediate piece between the inner element or punch 1 and the transverse corner 4.
