<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a tire rim, of new construction, as well as to the method of manufacturing this rim.
It particularly relates to a one-piece rim suitable for tubeless tires and a novel method for forming the rim from an annular strip.
Tubeless tires are starting to become widespread and therefore modifications and changes have to be made to current rims, especially multi-part rims for trucks, in order to adapt them to tubeless tires. The essential condition of a rim which is to be used with a tubeless tire is to be waterproof when the tire is mounted on the rim. This presents many problems in the case of conventional multipart rims for trucks, and a one-piece rim is a solution to these problems.
A one-piece rim, to be commercially successful, must be able to be interchangeable with the multi-part rims currently in use so that a truck driver can replace the entire tire and wheel assembly. inner tube used until now by a tubeless tire, without having to buy new wheels. The present invention provides a one-piece rim with a rim mounting surface interchangeable with the usual guttering edge of known rims. An object of the invention is therefore to provide a rim which can be used with tubeless tires. air, and interchanged with current rims.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rim the manufacture of which is economical and the cost price relatively low.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new process for manufacturing rims.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sealed rim without separate sealing elements.
Other objects and advantages will emerge from the remainder of the description.

In the present invention, an annular strip is first formed from a flat steel strip by winding it into a ring and welding the butt ends in the usual way. This annular band is then shaped by a series of shaping and rolling operations to obtain a rim having bead seats and flanges retained on each edge and a surface used for mounting the rim, on the inner periphery and close to the rim. 'one of the edges. The rim is formed such that the pressurized air contained in a tire mounted on the rim cannot escape through any part of the rim.
Hot rolled high draw steel about 3/16 inch thick (4.7 mm) is satisfactory for making rims by this process.
The rim 1, shown in FIG. 1, comprises devices for mounting the beads 2 and 3 along its edges. The bead mounting devices include bead seats 4 and 5 for receiving the inner periphery of the beads of the tire (not shown) when mounted on the rim and flanges retaining the beads 6 and 7, having the shape of rolled edges 8 and 9 extending radially outward from the outer axial edges of the bead seats. The middle part 10 of the rim is of smaller diameter than the bead seats 4 and 5 and has along one edge a part 11 extending radially inward and serving to mount the rim on the wheel.
Part 11 has the same profile as the guttering edge of a conventional multi-part rim, so that the rim 1 of the present invention can be mounted Interchangeably with a conventional multi-part rim. The mounting part 11 is formed of a part 12 inclined radially and inwards, extending axially and outwardly towards the edge from the middle part 10 and of a part 13 extending radially towards the edge. 'outside which joins at 14 the edge of the wound flange 6 retaining the bead. A practically closed cavity is thus formed between the bead mounting device 2 and the rim mounting device 11.
At this point, the part 13 of the mounting device 11 bears at 14 against the inner face of the outer axial peripheral edge of the bead seat 4 to prevent sagging of the bead seat 4. The inner edge of the bead seat 4 is supported by a part 15 extending substantially radially inwardly from the bead seat to the inner part 10 of the rim and by a part 17 which in the preferred form of the invention extends axially over a short distance distance inward and in contact with the inner part 10. The part 17 can be omitted, if desired, so as to rest the end of the part 15 against the periphery of the inner part 10 of the rim.
In the drawings, a sheet metal blank 18 is wound up and butt welded at 19 to form an annular strip 20 of the desired diameter, following the usual rim manufacturing process. It is essential that the weld 19 be airtight to avoid losses of air pressure through the weld when a tire is fitted to the rim, and the weld must also be ductile so that it does not rupture. during rim shaping.
In the first shaping operation, the annular band 20 is placed on a Lower die 21 mounted on a Lower platen 22 of a high pressure platen press. The upper die 23, mounted on the upper plate 24 of the press, has a cavity 25 in the shape of an inverted U. By bringing the upper plate 24 and the plate closer
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lower water 22, the strip 20 contacts the inner periphery of the U-shaped cavity 25, which folds it first outward and then to the opposite edge of the strip, as can be seen in the figure. fig. 5.
To keep the folded part 30 of the strip parallel to the strip
20, a guide device 27 rises to assume the position shown in FIG. 4, when the tape is placed in the press. As the upper plate 24 approaches the lower plate 22 during the first shaping operation, the guide device 27 is simultaneously lowered so that the end 28 of the folded-down portion of the strip contacts the shoulder 29. of the guide, so that the end 28 cannot move inwardly, towards the strip 20. At the end of this operation, the guide device descends into the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 4, and the strip 20 provided with a U-shaped edge is withdrawn from the press.
As can be seen in fig. 6, the U-shaped edge 30 of the web is then placed on a lower die 31 mounted on the lower platen 32 of a similar platen press. This press can be the same as for the first bundling operation, but preferably another press is used so as not to have to change the dies for the different operations. The upper die 33 mounted on the upper plate 34, as it moves towards the Lower plate 32, contacts the end of the strip 20 and deforms the U-shaped part 30 against the die 31 to form the part 11 used for mounting the rim on the wheel from the U part 30 of the strip.
The remaining portion of the U-shaped edge 30 of the strip is shaped to angularly approach the outer periphery of the strip 20.
As can be seen from the freezes. 7 and 8, the deformed part of the strip is then placed on a lower die 35 mounted on the lower plate of a press (not shown) which takes the strip by the edge comprising the inclined part 12 of the part 11 serving to mount the rim. Upper dies 36 and 37, mounted on the upper plate 38 of the press attack the opposite sides of the shaped part of the strip, while the upper plate approaches the lower plate, to shape the bead mounting device 2 therein and rim mounting surface 11.
In order to form the bead mounting device 3 at the opposite edge of the strip, it is necessary to bring this edge approximately to the diameter required for the seat 5 of the bead by means of a conical expansion die 39, viewed in position. dilated in fig. 9, and comprising similar sections 40 and an expansion cone 41 mounted on the upper platen 42 of a platen press. The periphery: The interior of the part 11 serving to mount the rim is centered on the die 43 mounted on the lower plate 44 of the press.
As the press closes, the cone 41 presses the sections 40 outward to expand the portion of the strip 45 near the opposite side edge of the strip. The cone is then withdrawn and the sections 40 return to their Initial position.
On pin 10 the annular band is placed between shaping rollers 46 and 47. Pressure is applied to bring the rollers closer together and rotated according to a method known in the manufacture of rims to form. an inverted U-shaped portion 48, along the outer edge of the expanded portion. '
In fig. 11, shaping rollers 49 and 50 act in a similar manner to bend the outer leg 51 of the U-shaped portion 48 inwardly, so as to bring it substantially into contact with the web.
The rim 1 is now completely shaped but must in most cases be dimensioned to obtain a rim whose dimensions are within the prescribed tolerances.
The rim can be made to size by one of the methods known in the manufacture of rims. For example, after completing the second
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
rolling operation, the rim can be slightly expanded, then contracted to the desired size, or these operations can be reversed, first contraction then expansion to the desired size. It is also possible that contraction or expansion alone will result in a rim of the desired size.
In a variant of the invention, shown in FIG. 12, the inner part 10 of the rim and the contiguous part 17 have a corresponding boss 52. The boss 52 can be formed by one of the rolling operations shown in FIGS. 10 or 11 by making the desired modifications to the rollers. The boss 52 is a simple means of avoiding any relative movement between the part 10 of the rim and the bead seat 4.
Another means of preventing relative movement between the part 10 of the rim and the bead seat 4 is shown in FIG. 13 where the parts are spot welded at 53 at intervals on the periphery or adhesively welded at 54, also at intervals. In either welding operation, care must be taken not to make the metal porous at the weld point.
In the variant of the invention shown in FIG. 14, the part 17 extending along the part 10 of the rim is omitted.
The end of part 15 can be tack welded at Intervals as at 55 on the periphery so that the bead seat 4 cannot move relative to part 10 of the rim. When making this modified form of rim, one of the shaping operations can be eliminated, reducing the number of operations required to manufacture the rim. The U-shaped edge 30 of the rim is formed as in fig. 8 during the second shaping operation, which eliminates the shaping operation shown in the figures. 6 and 7. Part 11 for mounting the rim is substantially formed and the bead mounting device 2 is partially formed during the second shaping operation. The device 2 for mounting the bead is completed during the rolling operations.
.. Preferably, a valve (not shown) is applied in a sealed manner on the radial part 13 of the mounting surface of the rim.
A valve at this point is easily accessible and provides a convenient means of inflating the tire, with pressurized air passing through the valve into the cavity or chamber formed between the bead mounting device 2 and the rim mounting device 11. , then by the seal between parts 10 and 17 in the inner tube formed by the rim and the tire mounted on it, to inflate the tire. A valve can be applied to the inner part 10 of the rim if desired.
Certain embodiments have been well described by way of illustration, but numerous changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
