<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to rims and more particularly to a method of manufacturing a hollow base rim in a single piece provided with mounting means forming an integral part.
The expansion of the use of tubeless tires on trucks and buses has spread the use of the hollow-base rim, on account of its reduced weight and its relatively easy - 'obtain an airtight seal between the tire and the rim. The hollow base rim has now been adopted in practice for vehicle wheels of widely used sizes. It is essential that a rim with a hollow base intended to replace a rim which can be dismantled in several parts, be interchangeable with the latter for mounting on the wheels of vehicles, in order to make it more acceptable to users. The economy of vehicle operation does not allow replacing both the wheels and the rims for tubeless tires.
Due to the requirement for interchangeability between hollow base rims and multi-part rims, the practice heretofore has been to attach one or more additional mounting parts to hollow base rims.
This process is not only expensive, but these attached mounting parts are liable to break or weaken prematurely. This increases the possible causes of rim breakage. It is highly desirable to provide a rim with a hollow base comprising a mounting surface which forms an integral part thereof. This being the object of the present invention, the objects of the present invention are: - to provide a method of manufacturing a rim with a hollow base, comprising a surface assembly which is an integral part of it; - To provide an economical and simple manufacturing process of such a rim; - To provide a rim manufacturing process which allows the critical dimensions of the rim to be checked.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the description given below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a section before the formation of the rim; Figure 2 is a section through the fully formed rim.
In the drawings, the rim base 1 is made from a sheet according to well-known conventional methods. The flat sheet is circled and welded to the appropriate diameter then brought by rolling to the profile shown in figure 1. The rim base 1, shown in figure 1, comprises bead seats 2 and 3, and flange cheeks. 'enue of beads 4 and 5 formed along the opposite edges of the base 1.
The shape and dimensions of the bead seats 2 and 3 and the retaining cheeks 4 and 5 are standardized according to the standards accepted in the janitor industry. The recessed middle part 6 between the bead traps 2 and 3 has a recess 7 connected to the recessed part by part 8 inclined inward o The recess 7 is formed along the edge of the rim intended to become the mounting edge
After this profiling of the rim base 1, it is calibrated with precision, paying particular attention to the bead seats 2 and 3 and to the retaining cheeks 4 and 5.
To give a rim base shown in Figure 1 the final profile shown in Figure 2, the contoured rim base 1 is placed on the female die section 9, which tightly supports a substantial portion of the inner periphery. of the profiled base 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The outer axial portion of the recess 7, the bead seat and the retaining cheek are not supported by the die section 9. The die section 9, can be attached to the lower platen of a platen press or die. a similar apparatus, so that the contoured part of the base can easily be fitted when the press is open.
As shown in the drawings, a male die section 10 is attached to the upper platen of the press. This die has a downwardly extending part 11 which attacks the inner periphery of the bead seat 2, and also has a groove 12 for receiving the edge of the retaining cheek 4. Part 11 of the die 10 follows the bottom. - inner riphery of the bead seat and thus maintains the dimensions of the bead seat at their predetermined value during the remainder of the forming operation.
Die sections 9 and 10, as shown in the drawings, are one piece elements, but each or both can be sectioned if desired. The particular construction of the dies will be determined by the particularities of the different rims that must be produced.
When the press is closed, the die 10 folds or pushes the recess 7 of the rim base 1 back on itself to form a fold 13 along the edge of the rim. When this is done, the curvature in the recess 7 comments at the inner or outer axial end of the inclined portion 8. The surface 13 corresponds to the gutter of the mounting edge of conventional multi-piece rims. Note that the folded part rests on the outer periphery of the recessed middle part 6, at 14, to form a rigid support for the mounting surface 13 of the rim as well as for the bead seat 2 by means of the rounded part. 15.
To precisely conform the rim mounting surface 13 using the die, the surface 16 of the die section 10 contacts the shoulder 17 of the die section 9 to provide a positive stop which limits closing die sections 9 and 10. After the rim has been formed, the upper die is removed by opening the press and the fully formed rim is separated from the die.
It is clear that the method described for forming a one-piece hollow-base rim having an integral rim mounting surface is a simple one-pass manufacturing process and includes means for precise dimensional control. rim reviews The critical dimensions are the diameters, contours of the retaining flanges and bead seats and the rim mounting surface. The inclined part 8 and the rounded part 13 form the mounting surface of the rim which can be compared to the mounting surface of a conventional multi-element rim. As the matrix positively matches each of these critical surfaces, these elements are not deformed in the -profiling operation.
Although certain embodiments and details of execution have been shown to illustrate the invention, it is clear that various changes and modifications can be made thereto without departing from its scope.
