<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to the treatment of steels or other metals or alloys with liquid aluminothermic mixtures accompanied by their slags.
Until now, when it was desired to introduce a liquid ferroalloy obtained by aluminothermy into a steel, it was necessary to separate the slag in order to prevent the steel thus produced from being loaded with alumina inclusions. and various oxides. To do this, it has been recommended to prepare the thermite mixture in a special cupola in the bottom of which is made an orifice. When the ferroalloy resulting from the reaction had separated from the production slag, the lower orifice was opened allowing the liquid metal to flow into a mixing bag.
Thus, the addition, to the cast iron or steel, of ferro-alloys at high temperature, separated beforehand from their manufacturing slag, which was considered to be a harmful element, either because of its abundance or its point of release. solidification too high.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the liquid addition of noble alloys, or ferro-alloys, in cast irons and steels.
Another object of the present invention is to obtain very simply a ferro-alloy or a pure metal, free of carbon, harmful elements, of gas, and an active and fluid slag at the temperature of the metal bath.
A third object of the invention is to obtain at will a ferro-alloy or a pure metal accompanied by a neutral or active slag.
The present invention relates to a process for treating steels or other metals or alloys, at casting temperature, with noble metals or alloys and their modified slags, obtained by an aluminothermic reaction.
It should be understood that the term "thermite" is used herein in a generic sense and does not necessarily imply the use of aluminum, as a reducing agent; any other substance can be used if it behaves under similar conditions and in particular if it gives rise to a strongly exothermic reaction by combination with another substance such as oxygen.
This process essentially consists in incorporating at the time of casting, in the cast iron or steels, at the same time as the liquid addition of the desired noble metal or alloy, the slag resulting from the thermite manufacture of said noble metal or alloy, the composition of said slag being modified by additions introduced at the time of preparation of the thermite load generating an exact amount of the noble metal or alloy to be added to the metals to be treated.
One of the characteristics of the invention consists in preparing separately the aluminothermic charges, which generate a well-defined quantity of pure metal, for example 1, 5 or 10 kg. The oxides or ores necessary for these charges are chosen as pure as possible, in the oxide richest in oxygen, in order to come as close as possible to the theoretical conditions of the thermochemical equation defining the reaction that is prepare.
For example, if it is desired to constitute a mixture which generates molybdenum, the reaction will be used:
Mo03 + 2 Al = A1203 + Mo + 217,600 Calories.
Another characteristic of the invention consists in completing the preparation of the feeds, by introducing quantities of additives calculated so that their melting absorbs the excess calories from the aluminothermic reaction, while carrying out an operation whose pro- duction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The product will be at a temperature very close to 2000 C. The additions can be, for example, constituted by calcium oxide (CaO), barium carbonate (BaC02) or any other material which one would wish to involve in the reaction product, in particular for the purposes of improving the meltability of the slag and giving it a de-phosphorous and desulfurizing action.
The fillers obtained in accordance with the invention generate a perfectly known quantity of pure metal, for example Mo, and of a defined slag, for example A1203 + Ca0, or more complex and of a nature not to be harmful to the steel or to the cast iron in which it will be incorporated.
However, there are cases where the oxides of the metals, which it is desired to obtain in the pure state, do not lend themselves so easily to the preparation of the charges. Some show clearly insufficient reactions, the heat balance may be too weakly positive and even negative. In this case, it is necessary, as far as possible, to have recourse to mixtures of oxides. The mixture should be established in such a way that one can have an excess of calories making it possible, under good conditions, to constitute a harmonious metal and slag unit. Thus, for example, for titanium oxide we will work according to the following equation: 3 Ti02 + 3 V205 + 14 Al = 7 A1203 + 3 Ti + 6 V + 752,000 Calories.
Insofar as the liquid thermite mixture resulting from this reaction will be at the temperature required for the addition to cast irons or steels, a certain number of calories will be available to melt additions, such as, for example, Ca0 and BaCO, or any other slag constituent whose action will be desirable to make it possible to obtain, with Ti and V, a fluid slag at the temperature of the steel or cast iron which will receive the addition. At will, this slag will be neutral or active.
The composition of fillers in accordance with the invention capable of generating given quantities of ferroalloys exhibiting a modified slag is given below by way of examples.
Mo03 + 2 A1 + Ca0 + Fe
Mo03 + 2 Al + Fe + C03Ba + CaO Mo03 + Fe203 + 4 Al + Ca0 + Ba0
For a ferro-vanadium generating load according to the equation: 3 V20 + 10 Al = 5 A1203 + 6 v + 622,000 Calories, depending on the calories available and taking into account the temperature sought for the addition to the 'steel or cast iron.
3 V205 + 10 Al + x CaO
3 V205 + 10 Al + x C03Ba
3 V205 + 10 Al + x Ca0 + y Ba0
The implementation of the charges according to the method according to the invention is carried out very simply. The procedure is as follows, in the vicinity of furnaces, cupola furnaces or converters.
In a reaction ladle suitably lined with refractory, the aluminothermic reaction is carried out a few moments before the metal which will receive the addition is poured. When the thermite reaction is terminated and the reaction product is completely liquid in the pit, the metal to be treated is poured into the ladle of the steelworks or foundry. As soon as a pocket bottom is formed during casting
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the metal, the contents of the reaction ladle are poured in such that the two liquids come into contact as closely as possible.
Thanks to the high temperature of the addition, the operating mode and the thermal mixing, the metal to be treated and the additions react perfectly.
Usually in the case of a feed addition, yields of more than .95% in V, Mo, Cr, and the like. In the case of purely deqxidizing or degassing additions, the combined action of

titanium, for example perfectly o: completed. p9J: 'the refining action of the' slag of the reaction, makes it possible to observe remarkable results of the deoxidizing, denitriding, desulfurizing and phosphorous action of the whole of the addition.
