<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The subject of the invention is a tool, made of suitable resistant materials, intended to facilitate and regularize the execution of mortar joints during the laying and masonry of hollow building blocks.
Generally speaking, hollow building blocks are made "blind", ie. that the openings do not completely pierce the blocks. These openings are therefore closed by a veil, of the same material as the block itself. The blocks are laid so that the obstructions are at the top. These fillings facilitate the installation of the mortar on the edges of the blocks. The mason can in fact act more freely because he does not have to worry about falling mortar in the openings, which would take place if they were not sealed.
However, these fillings have two major drawbacks. Indeed, these sails constitute a loss of material, because they do not contribute in any way to the solidity of the construction, and they involve the use of a not insignificant quantity of mortar, which is useless.
The object of the invented tool is to temporarily close off the block openings, and to ensure the installation of the mortar in a strictly regular and uniform layer, on the edges of the blocks which receive the static charges and ensure the solidity of the structure. construction.
For this purpose, the tool is formed of a frame encircling the upper edges of the block to be laid, and provided with boxes which fit together, or not, in the openings of said block, so as to close them, the height of the frame. and boxes above the upper face of the block being determined by the height of the spacers which connect the boxes to the frame itself. This height determines the thickness of the layer of mortar that the mason deposits in the cavities which remain free between the frame and the caissons.
The worker can therefore, thanks to this device, spread the mortar without any loss, as if the openings had been closed in the usual way during their manufacture. It is also ensured to spread the mortar in a layer of sufficient and regular thickness.
The tool is extremely light. It sits easily on the block, and removes just as easily. It therefore does not constitute a nuisance for the worker, quite the contrary, because the mason can entrust the installation of the mortar to a helper, and be satisfied with the adjustment of the block on its seat, and its junction with the neighboring blocks.
The tool may be provided with a device for enabling the block to be manipulated, i.e. lift it and put it on its base, before receiving the layer of mortar. An example of such a device will be given below.
Figure I shows in perspective a model of the tool for a hollow block with two openings. The frame is connected to the boxes c1 and c2 by spacers e whose height determines the thickness of the layer of mortar which will be deposited in the openings or cavities formed between the frame and the boxes. The m1 and m2 handles allow the placement and removal of the tool on the block, the upper edges of which are therefore coated with a uniform layer of mortar.
Figure II shows in plan, and in elevation along a section AB, a block with two openings provided with a tool similar to that of Figure I, but whose handles m1 and m2 have been replaced by a device allowing the manipulation of the block. This device consists of two side rods sliding in supports fixed to the frame and bent at right angles to the lower level of the block. Fig. It shows the rods T1 and T2 the supports .si and S2 the right angles D1 and D2 For the lifting of the block, the handles M1 and M2 are oriented so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the right angles slide under the block.
After laying the latter, and the layer of mortar, the handles are oriented so as to retract the right angle and allow the removal of the tool,
The lifting tool and lever devices shown in Figures I and II are only examples of the principles to which the patented tool meets. They are therefore illustrative and non-limiting, both in terms of shapes and dimensions of the blocks, and as regards the number, shape and arrangement of the openings with which said blocks are pierced. The frame itself may not encircle the block, but simply be placed on the upper face thereof, its interior and exterior dimensions being determined by the nature and thickness of the joint to be produced.
