<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to improvements made to the manufacture of electric discharge devices, and more particularly to the assembly of electrodes.
In the industrial production of electric discharge lamps, especially receiving lamps, it is customary to isolate the various electrodes, and to maintain the desired spacing between them, by means of mica discs associated with the electrodes. ends of side rods or other extensions of the electrodes. In accordance with the present invention. the support of the electrodes is provided by a flexible tape wound around their ends. This structure offers notable advantages over the previous arrangements, particularly from the point of view of the automatic mounting of the electrodes.
It also allows better centering, by not requiring any auxiliary support, such as the lateral grid rods which tend to deform the field between the electrodes. The assembly according to the invention is simple, and particularly well suited to the mass production of electric discharge lamps, such as those commonly used in radio receivers
The invention will be clearly understood by referring to the following description and to the figures which accompany it, given by way of non-limiting exemplary embodiment.
Figure 1 is an elevational view, partially open, of an electric discharge device according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view showing part of the electrode assembly of the device of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a perspective view showing a preferred method of mounting the electrodes of the device of Figure 1.
To simplify the figure, a triode has been shown comprising a cathode sleeve 1, a grid 2 and a cylindrical anode 3. which admit the same axis. According to the invention, the three electrodes are held in position and isolated from each other by several layers of tape wound at each of their ends; thus obtains the buffers 4 and 5 which respectively separate the cathode from the grid, the grid from the anode. The insulating tape which constitutes the buffers has good electrical properties and does not contain any body which could be released during the manufacture of the lamp and cause some deterioration, in particular, of the cathodeo It should not either - once the lamp is finished , release gas in appreciable quantity.
The chosen insulating substance can be, for example, sheet asbestos containing a small proportion of bentonite, or a flexible mica.flexible sheet prepared from thin strips.
As it appears in Figure 1, all the electrodes are supported in the casing 6 using, on the one hand, conductors 7. 8 and 9, having a certain rigidity and connected respectively to the grid, to the cathode and the anode, on the other hand, of some of the lead wires 10. The ends of the heating filament 11 are also connected to two separate lead wires.
FIG. 3 shows the cathode cylinder 1 mounted on a rotary mandrel 12. Winding of the insulating tape in the vicinity of the ends of the cathode is effected by the rotation of the mandrel. At the start of the operation, the end of the tape is fixed on the cathode sleeve by gluing it or by inserting it into a slot provided for this purpose. As shown in Figure 3, the grid is formed by a perforated rectangular plate. A process for making the grids, known under the name of "electroforming". is particularly indicated here. It consists in photographing the design of the grid on a surface covered with an insulating coating, in developing this coating and in reproducing the grid by electrolytic deposition on the developed surface.
As it appears in the figure. the grid 15 is placed on the tape 13 and 14. at the desired time, determining
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
thus the number of thicknesses of tape wound around the cathode, and, consequently, the distance between cathode and grid. The grid has a width slightly less than the circumference of the pads 4, so that once wrapped around them, its edges are sufficiently distant to allow the tape to pass. It is thus possible to continue the winding without being hampered by the adjacent edges of the grid. As a variant, two small notches 16 can be provided in the grid for the passage of the tape.
It is also possible to give the grid a width somewhat greater than the circumference of the buffers so that its edges overlap slightly. Although the grid no longer has the shape of a perfect cylinder, this arrangement offers an advantage: the certainty that the electrons heading towards the anode will not escape control by the grid at any point. The tape is then continued to be wound until the thickness of the plug 5 corresponds to the desired grid-anode distance, then the anode is mounted, which also has the shape of a rectangular plate; its superimposed edges are spot welded in order to maintain the whole structure. The two edges can be joined in a protruding weld, as shown at 17 in Figure 1.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, mentioned by way of example, the electric discharge device comprises a cathode sleeve with an external diameter of 1.15 mm. a grid of 6 mm in circumference and an anode of 12 mm in circumference. We use two strips of 10 cm long and 0.75 mm wide of a tape formed of clay and asbestos.
5 layers of tape are wound between the cathode and the grid and 10 between the grid and the anode; a cathode-grid distance of 0.25 mm and a grid-anode distance of 0.50 mm are thus obtained. The grid has the same thickness as the tape, i.e. 0.05 mm. This similarity is not essential. Obviously, the thinner the ribbon, the less the cross section of the grid cylinder differs from the perfect circle.
In the above description, we have considered cylindrical electrodes, but the internal electrode of the assembly may have an oval or even rectangular section. In that case. it is possible to give the next electrode a section approximating more or less to the circular section by suitably choosing the starting point for the winding of the ribbon.
On the other hand, the invention is in no way limited to triodes but applies whatever the number of electrodes. It is also possible to remove one of the pads at one end if the insulation is of sufficient width relative to the length of the electrodes to provide the desired support.
