<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The means, hitherto proposed for the removal of dirt from steel converters, i.e. known deposits, most often in the form of bridges, consisting mainly of steel and iron, consist of forming in the orifices of converters and gradually preventing operation, are generally not suitable in practice, due to the fact that it is generally not possible to wait until the converter has cooled down and that one cannot approach the hot converter, which spreads the radiation of a strong incandescence.
Thus, an attempt was made to lift the dirt by means of hydraulic plunger devices placed at the location of the converter head, which only succeeded after repeated tests and, for still other reasons, proved to be very disadvantageous. According to another method, the whole converter was tilted, by means of its rotating device against a bar directed diagonally on the dirt, in which case strong shaking occurred most often. and inadmissible stresses on the seat, as well as damage to the cover of the converter.
It has also been imagined to curl and drive away the dirt by means of a water-cooled cutting burner, the device being for - seen by a means of protection; metallic powder or other powdery materials were then blown in to provide a heat of oxidation and a higher burning rate.
However, such devices require barely bearable consumption, in particular of high-value cutting oxygen, if one wants to shut down with the burner and remove the dirt absolutely. 0-ballast why we were finally limited to making, at the burner, only notches in the dirt and removing the residues still present by means of the aforementioned rod and the tilting device of the converter. But the other drawbacks mentioned again arose and the converters required expensive repairs and downtime. All the means applied and the method implemented using these means proved to be complicated, and the work was long and expensive.
Thanks to the invention, the drawbacks which have hitherto arisen in removing dirt from converters are avoided in a simple and safe manner. According to the principle on which the invention is based, a percussion piston, which can be controlled by hand and actuated by any means, pushes in front of him in a cylinder a shock transmission rod provided with a shaped tool. in a suitable manner and thus pushes the tool against the cress, the latter or its various fragments being cut down, detached, raised or torn off, depending on the type of tool used.
In this way, it is possible to remove the grime from the converter or its divided fragments by means of the burner to be cut, for example by means of a long percussion tool, with compressed air, shaped according to the invention and controlled by hand, and this without difficulty and sparing the converter and its parts. In this case, the tool can be actuated pneumatically, by means of steam, by means of combustion gas or else by hydraulic means, electric means or by any other suitable means.
So that the device can be quickly placed in the working position on the converter platform, the device for stopping and activating the cylinder carrying the tool is movable in all the desired directions, thanks to a device gimbal, tilles, tags, or by means of any other suitable device. In addition, the cylinder carrying the tool is arranged, with a stop and actuation device movable in all directions, on a suitably guided carriage, which can move back and forth with respect to the converter, which carriage is itself located on another mobile carriage on rails, hooking onto the mushrooms of these and fixing in front of the converter by means of rail clamps of known construction,
or who is himself on some mobile lati or moved the

by means of a crane, this frame being able to be properly fixed in front of the converter.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment given by way of example of the intention. Figure 1 shows the longitudinal section of a percussion device, compressed air, shaped according to the invention, introduced into the opening of a converter, and Figure 2 is a Tme in elevation of this device, showing the handling of the latter, the position of the converter being modified.
The new type of apparatus consists essentially of the working cylinder 1, into which the percussion piston 2 is pushed, movable by any suitable actuating means, for example by means of compressed air, said piston 2 being, in this case, followed by a shock transmission rod 4, provided with a servo-piston 3, the rod whose read end is provided with a suitable shaping tool 5, which can be replaced by any other corresponding tool. to goal.
The movement of the percussion piston 2 is controlled, in the exemplary embodiment shown, by a control member 6, known per se and actuated by hand, thanks to which the supply of compressed air to the cylinder 1 can be adjusted. as well as its exit from said cylinder, to strike, with the desired impact force, the shock transmission rod 4, by the percussion piston 2 and to be able to withdraw the latter.
It is further characteristic for the apparatus that the percussion piston 2 can push the shock transmission rod 4 to an entire extent in front of it and, consequently, the tool 5 under the part of dirt in question, the latter being removed or different fragments of dirt that can be removed simply by violent shocks, without the position of the tool itself having to be changed, which ensures a fast working mode.
The working power having been provided, the shock transmission rod 4 can perform its return movement in the cylinder 1, thanks to its servo-piston 3, of 'IL-compressed air then being brought in front of it by a duct auxiliary 7, issuing into the anterior chamber of the cylinder, and the tool 5 can then be applied to the following fragment of dirt. For this purpose, compressed air is brought into the inlet and outlet duct 8 opening into the cantilever of cylinder 1, after which the shock transmission rod 4 advances again until the 'tool 5 presses forcefully against the dirt, while the percussion piston 2 returns to its starting position.,.
Thanks to the hand control device =, it is then possible to bring compressed air behind the percussion piston and thus again apply powerful strokes of the piston to the tram mission rod of shock 4 and thus after. For the return stroke of the percussion piston 2, for which a particular live force is not necessary and would be unnecessary, a quantity of air appreciably less than that which is necessary for the advance stroke is sufficient, if the latter is carried out with great energy.
So that the tool 5, during the return stroke, does not accidentally exit from a favorable position chosen once, it is then advantageously applied firmly against the dirt, as can be obtained without difficulty by the pressure of 'compressed air simultaneously charging the servo-piston 3. This is all the more of an advantage as the entire tool is thus pressed and additionally held at the same time from the front and its actuation by hand is significantly facilitated.
If, during the shock removal of the dirt fragments, a shock is given in the vacuum, the servo-piston 3 and; as a result, the percussion piston 2 is withdrawn, in the front part of the cylinder 1, by an air mattress and additional elastic elements of a known type, for example by Lelleville springs, rubber rings or the like. . This also happens with the percussion piston 2 during the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
return stroke in the posterior space of the cylinder. In addition, it is also already possible to send compressed air against the percussion piston which performs its return movement rapidly, when it has not yet reached its posterior dead center.
If necessary, the device can be cooled with compressed control air. In addition, it would also be possible, in particular cases, to provide for a particular cooling of the tool, for example by means of water. Apart from compressed air, one could still use, with a special conformation of the apparatus ,. steam, combustion gases or the like as control agents. However, the removal of dirt by pressure can also be done hydraulically, electrically or purely mechanically.
In this way, we have the possibility of removing the dirt or its various fragments, by impact, tangentially to the wall, simply to detach it by cutting or chiselling effect or even, without pronounced cutting effect, to detach or tear it off. directly from the wall by the effect of corners. Both by the choice of the tool and by the measurement of the force of the impact, an optimum adaptation to the particular conditions occurring can be provided for.
So that the apparatus can be easily brought into the working position ;, it is provided with a stop and actuation device, in which case, in the exemplary embodiment, the cylinder 1, mounted on a cardan device 1a is arranged on a carriage 9 molile on tracks. With this device, the device can be tilted sideways, by hand, without difficulty, by guiding it by means of a guide member 10, suitably shaped and provided with several handles for gripping it.
The vertical movement of the apparatus is however normally prevented by a vertical brake 11, spring loaded, so that the tool cannot reciprocate in the vertical plane as a result of the movements of the weight of the percussion piston. who works. This brake can be released by means of the pedal 12 by means of a rod 13, after which the device automatically drops forward, by the advance of the heavy percussion piston 2, with a little compressed air, and is lifted by the return of the percussion piston or can easily be lifted and lowered by hand to the corresponding intermediate position of the percussion piston, as long as tool 5 is free at the front and! not lean against the grime.
The spring loaded vertical brake 11 is adjustable and nevertheless still allows for safety reasons, for example when the converter 14 rotates in a planned manner during the engagement of the apparatus, a vertical movement if a force exerts a significant effect on the device. 'apparatus.
The gimbal suspension of the cylinder 1 is furthermore mounted on a device 15, consisting of another carriage, which can move forward or backward with respect to the converter 14 and which is suitably guided; this carriage can be moved mechanically in a known manner or be blocked in the working posivion. It carries counterweights, which can be arranged for example on both sides of the maneuvering station. By means of the carriage 15, the apparatus can be introduced into and out of the orifice of the converter 14 and it can thus further axially increase its working field. The mobile rail carriage 9 can be fixed in front of the converter 14 by means of rail clamps 16, of known construction, and be hung on the rail mushrooms 17.
The counter-shocks occurring on the device during the acceleration and delay of the percussion piston 2 can thus be taken up without difficulty, especially since the inertia resistance of the inert masses of the device with its device works against these stresses which occur for short periods of time. In the case of devices working hydraulically, mechanically or otherwise, with a slowly increasing power effect, the full back pressure will come into effect.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tion at the same level on the device itself and will thus make necessary an anchoring or a support of a corresponding force.
Thanks to the invention, it is possible to put the apparatus into operation quickly and without taking complicated measures for the anchoring to the converter or the like and to quickly and advantageously remove the broken dirt by means of a burner tool. cut, even when the gunk is still glowing and therefore has lower resistance. The converter 14 is then immediately ready for a new operation.
The suspension and actuation device described and shown constitutes only one example of an embodiment and it can be configured otherwise to meet other conditions, for example, in the case where there are no tracks on the converter platform.
