<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

QUIET STEEL CAST PARTS MANUFACTURING PROCESS. IN PARTICULAR
IN STRONGLY ALLOYED STEEL, AND SCORIE-PRODUCING COMPOSITION FOR THE
EXECUTION OF THE PROCESS.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing blocks and other parts of calmed steel, particularly of high alloy steel, in which after casting the molten steel into a cast form, for example a shell, the surface free of the mass of steel not yet solidified is covered with a layer of slag-producing agents and in which an electric current is maintained between the mass of steel and at least one electrode, the lower end of which is immersed in the slag producing agent above the metal surface,
the current developing sufficient power and being maintained for a time long enough that an amount of molten metal remains in the upper part of the casting until the core area of the casting has solidified.
In the process of the invention, the aim of which is to make better use of the casting metal used by reducing or eliminating the settling and segregation in the upper part of the casting, the composition of the slag-producing agent is very important.
The slag must cover the surface of the metal well at the operating temperature, determine an efficient transmission of heat, developed in the arc, to the metal below, and equalize the temperature differences of the various parts of the surface of the bath. In addition, the slag should be chemically neutral at the operating temperature, so that the analysis of the treated metal is not changed to an unacceptable extent. The slag must not have any tendency to produce blisters, porosities, slag inclusions or other defects in the treated part of the casting.
The present invention is based on the discovery that certain species of slag-producing compositions with aluminum oxide
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
as main constituent, meet the conditions indicated above particularly well. The new process according to the invention is therefore characterized in that, as slag-producing agent, a composition contains 35 to 65% of aluminum oxide, 20 to 55% of calcium fluoride and 6 to 20% of oxide. magnesium. The invention also includes the composition given per se.
As impurities it is necessary to consider among others water (free or combined) and 1-carbon dioxide (united to alkaline earth oxide). A particular advantage of the slag-producing agent according to the invention, however, lies in the fact that it is relatively insensitive to moderate contents of these impurities. In some cases, when using a slag-producing mixture containing about 8% H2O + CO2, a satisfactory result can still be obtained. In order to avoid the danger of blistering or pore formation in the upper part of the casting, however, a maximum tolerable content of about 4% H20 + CO2 is preferably prescribed.
Other unwanted impurities are iron oxide and manganese oxide. The total content of these oxides (FeO + MnO) should not be greater than 2411 - and preferably less than 1%.
The slag-producing composition according to the invention may, besides the constituents given above, also contain calcium oxide or silica (SiO2) or both at the same time, the content of each of these two constituents not may not be higher than 10%. As a general rule, the silica content should not be greater than 5%. These two materials allow some adjustment of the physical properties of the slag. However, in certain cases, these additional materials and more particularly the silica can give the slag an undesirable oxidizing character.
In the manufacture of steel castings which contain relatively high contents of base materials readily oxidizable at high temperature, for example carbon and chromium, it is generally preferred to use the slag producing compositions of the invention which do not contain calcium oxide and silica or only in the form of impurities.
As a typical example of a slag-producing composition according to the invention, the following can be given:
Calcined bauxite 50%
Fluor spar 40%
Calcined magnesite 10%
This composition gives remarkable results in the manufacture of castings of steels with a high chromium content, for example chromium steel with 13% chromium or austenitic chromium nickel steel.
The composition according to the invention advantageously has the form of a granular mixture of the constituents mentioned. It is, however, possible to melt together in advance two or more components (possibly all of the components) into a slag, which is cooled and crushed or granulated.
If appropriate, the slag-producing agent according to the invention may also contain other materials than those already mentioned, for example titanium dioxide. The total amount of these additional materials should not exceed 5%.
The method of the invention can be carried out with direct current as well as with alternating current. The arc electrode may, as is known per se, consist, for example, of a water-cooled copper or tungsten electrode, or of a carbon or graphite electrode.
In addition, the invention can be applied with particular advantage to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
known processes in which the casting is constructed gradually by introducing filler metal into the heated zone continuously or in stages, in particular by melting one or more fusible electrodes or by introducing granular metal or by pieces in the slag or metal bath in the vicinity of the electrode or electrodes.
Processes of this kind are described in US patents? 2,191,479 and 2,370,467.
