<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
La figo 4 montre une réalisation analogue dans le cas où l'appa- reil de mesure est constitué par un ampèremètre 3" monté en série sur le cir- cuit d'utilisation principale Les contacts 17,17a, et 17', 17'a sont inversés par rapport à la disposition de la figo 3, c'est-à-dire qu'ils sont normalement fermés;
ils sont d'autre part montés en série dans le circuit principal alimen- tant l'enroulement de 19 ampéremètreo Le circuit 14 comprenant l'enroulement 6 du relais de coupure est alors monté en dérivation sur le circuit principal dans des conditions tout à fait analogues de l'exemple de la fige 2. Pour la po- sition normale de l'aiguille 18, le courant traverse les contacts et l'ampére- mètre;

IMPROVEMENTS IN PROCEDURES AND DEVICES FOR PROTECTING MEASURING INSTRUMENTS AND ELECTRIC CIRCUITS IN GENERAL AGAINST ACCIDENTAL ANOMALIES OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CURRENTS THROUGH THEM.
Most of the electrical measuring instruments include an indication system made up of moving elements, such as a needle or a frame of great mechanical fragility, and auxiliary circuits such as shunts, series resistors made up of resistors. precision that cannot withstand overloads significantly greater than their normal load.
In particular, devices with multiple sensitivity can be subjected, as a result of false operations, to overloads reaching values such as to almost instantaneously lead to the deterioration of both the mobile element by mechanical force and of the circuits by heat. cleared
The same danger exists for instruments with high sensitivities, connected in circuits comprising a source capable of supplying at times an intense current.
Finally,
some devices intended for direct current measurements must not under any circumstances be traversed by alternating components liable to overlap with direct current.
There are known protection systems intended to interrupt the flow of current when it reaches a value such that it risks damaging the instrumenta in which the control device (constituted for example by a cut-off relay operating when the current is too intense) is mounted in series on the same circuit that is to be protected.These devices have the disadvantage of having the protection device constantly traversed by the main current and of introducing an additional resistance in this circuit. On the other hand, these devices lack consistency.
According to the invention, the cut-off relay, which is mounted in a so-called safety circuit, separate from the measurement or use circuit, ¯ is normally traversed by a zero or negligible current o The operation of this safety circuit is controlled by a component, separate from the cut-off relay,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
chosen so as to operate for an anomaly of very variable nature and of well-determined value o This safety device can itself, depending on the nature of the anomaly, be mounted either in series or in parallel with the main circuit o
Moreover, it is desirable to use as control means devices very sensitive to voltage variations to be controlled.
But on the other hand, care must be taken that these control means are not damaged by strong overvoltages.
A rectifier system such as a dry rectifier constitutes a device very sensitive to voltage variations; in fact, a dry rectifier is liable to react to voltage variations of the order of one volt.
But the reaction time of this device, i.e. the time in which it operates, is relatively slow. Hence, the use of dry rectifiers is desirable from the point of view of sensitivity, but undesirable because of its slow. reaction time, because dry rectifiers can be damaged by overvoltages before they have had time to react.
On the other hand, discharge tubes such as neon tubes have a very fast reaction time but are relatively insensitive to voltage variations o By combining a device with high sensitivity and slow reaction time with a device with lower sensitivity and fast reaction time, it is possible to obtain the advantages of both devices, while neutralizing their disadvantages.
The invention therefore relates to the combination of these two devices, the advantages of which prove that it is not a simple juxtaposition.
The use of a capacitor also simultaneously protects circuits to which the means of the invention are applied against direct current if an instrument intended to operate on alternating current is connected by mistake to a direct current source.
The following tables show the effect of the combined and complementary action of the control means according to the invention.

The accompanying drawing shows schematically some examples of embodiment of the invention.
Figs 1 and 2 show the case of a circuit supplying an electrical device of absolutely any kind that one wishes to protect, respectively against overvoltages (figo 1) and against overcurrents (figo 2.).
Figures 3 and 4 show a particular case in which the component (mounted in the main circuit) that one wishes to protect more particularly, is a measuring device; voltmeter (figo 3) to be protected against overvoltages-ammeter (figo 4) To protect against overcurrent.
Figo 5 shows a variant applicable to any measuring device, the safety circuit being completely independent of the supply circuit.
Figo 6 represents the complete protection of a circuit by the combination of the electrical means shown in figs 1 and 2.
The circuit to be protected is supplied from two current sources 1 and 2 ° 1 'and 2' have been shown the starting point of the use circuit in which the electrical device that is to be protected is placed, this member consisting for example of an electric motor 30
Upstream of the terminals 1 ', 2', for example on the section of conductor 1-le is mounted a contact 4, normally closed and capable of opening under Inaction of a cut-off relay 5 when the current of the desired intensity passes through the winding 6 of its electromagnet 7. In the example shown the contact 4 is subjected to the inaction of a spring 8 normally tending to cause the cut, that is to say the displacement of the contact in the direction of the arrow.
This contact 4 is on the other hand integral with a finger 9 suspended
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ceptible to come into place below a lug 10 integral with an armature They oscillating around a fixed point 12. It is immediately seen that the passage of current in the winding 6 will have the effect of attracting the armature II in the punctuated position for which the finger 9 is released from the lug 10, which allows the action of the spring 80 A pusher 13 enables the contact 4 to be closed again when normal conditions are re-established.
Of course, this relay system is absolutely arbitrary and the one which has just been described was chosen only as an example.
According to the invention, the winding 6 of the relay is mounted on a conductor 14 branched from the main circuit and comprises one or more safety devices 15, 15a and 15b chosen so as not to let any current flow when the current of the main circuit is normal and, on the contrary, to allow the passage of a current to supply winding 6, when the current of the main circuit presents a determined anomaly.
These members 15, 15a, 1512 can be for example the following: - a discharge lamp 15 whose starting voltage is chosen exactly equal to the critical voltage of the main circuit, that is to say voltage for which the circuit main must be coupled to avoid damage to member 30 - member 15a is formed by a pair of dry rectifiers which has a high resistance for low voltages, which decreases considerably when the voltage increases, even by a small amount . Such a device, more sensitive than the discharge lamp 15, makes it possible to supply the winding 6 for overvoltages of the order of 1 volt. It will be observed that the use of two rectifiers in parallel, and reversed, allows the passage of current. two-way direct or alternating current.
- the member 15b is a capacitor intended to protect a DC device 3 in the event that it is accidentally connected to AC terminals 1-2. We know, in fact, that a capacitor opposes the passage of direct current, but does not allow the passage of alternating current. If the main circuit is connected to an alternating current, a current will therefore pass through coil 6 which will trigger the relay.
The mounting of lafigo 2 is provided for the protection of the main circuit and its electrical component 3 against overcurrents. A member 16 is then provided on the main circuit allowing the passage of the current when the intensity is normal and opposing the passage of the current when the intensity increased.The circuit 14 of the winding 6 is then connected in bypass on this member 160
It is therefore conceivable that when the intensity is normal, the current will pass directly through the safety device 16 and that a negligible quantity of current will pass through the winding 6, the latter offering greater resistance.
If, on the contrary, the intensity increases, the resistance of member 16 increases and a current of greater intensity will flow through winding 6, operating the relay.
This member 16 can be formed by a combination of dry rectifiers (two rectifiers or two sets of rectifiers) in series and of opposite polarity.
Figs 3 and 4 show a particular embodiment in the case where the member 3 to be protected consists of a measuring device 3 ', of which the winding has been schematically punctuated.
In this case, the safety member may be constituted by two pairs of contacts 17 - 17a and 17 '- 17' a actuated by the movable member of the device, for example by the needle 18 of the device 3 '. These contacts are mounted in series with the winding 6 of the relay in the circuit 14 mounted as above as a bypass on the main circuit.
In the example of FIG. 3, component 3 'is a voltmeter which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ra, therefore, mounted itself as a bypass on the user circuit
19 comprising any use devices shown schematically at 20. These two groups of contacts 17, 17a and 17 ', 17'a are normally open,
their closure being produced by the oscillation of Isolation 17 or 17 'under the action of the needle when the latter exceeds one or other of its normal extreme positions.
It is immediately seen that the closing of one or the other of these circuits will allow the passage of the current through the winding 6 and the tripping of the relay.
Fig. 4 shows a similar embodiment in the case where the measuring device consists of a 3 "ammeter mounted in series on the main use circuit. Contacts 17, 17a, and 17 ', 17'a are reversed with respect to the arrangement of figo 3, that is to say they are normally closed;
on the other hand, they are connected in series in the main circuit supplying the 19 amperemeter winding o Circuit 14 comprising the winding 6 of the cut-off relay is then connected as a shunt on the main circuit under completely similar conditions of the example of fig 2. For the normal position of the needle 18, the current flows through the contacts and the ammeter;
When the needle exceeds one or other of its extreme normal positions, it opens one or the other of the contacts by acting on one or the other of the parts 17, 17 '; the current then passes through winding 6, causing the relay to be energized and the circuit breaking.
The embodiment shown schematically in Fig. 5 shows a variant applicable to a device for checking the operating anomalies of any measuring device. The safety contacts actuated by the needle being arranged as in the case of figo 3, that is to say in the circuit of the winding 6 of the electromagnet, but this circuit is then completely independent of the circuit. main and has an auxiliary current source 21.
It will be observed that in the arrangements described above, the safety circuit does not normally receive any current or a current of very low value and that an anomaly of the main circuit has the effect of passing through this safety circuit, the whole of the main circuit current o This therefore results in a greater difference in the value of the current to which the safety circuit is subjected, respectively in normal operation and when the safety system is tripped, compared to known systems in which the safety circuit always receives full main current
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and shown which have been given simply by way of examples.
In particular, one or more of the devices shown schematically in the various figures and in particular the device of the freezes can be used in combination. 1 and 3 on the one hand, and 2 and 4 on the other.
On the other hand, the various elements 15 and 15a can be used simultaneously depending on the sensitivity of the measuring device.
It is also possible to combine, as shown in figo 6, the mounting of the safety devices in bypass on the main circuit (figs.
1 and 3) or the mounting of these safety devices in series on the main circuit (arrangement of Figs 2 and 4), the relay then comprising two windings connected respectively in two circuits 14 respectively arranged as on the freezes. 1 and 3 and / or as in figs 2 and 40 This provides simultaneous safety for overvoltages and overcurrents.
It will also be noted that one can use a system in which the safety member is constituted by contacts, even in the case where one does not seek to ensure more particularly the safety of a measuring device, the contacts of the type of contacts 17, 17apouvant to be closed, for example, by a thermal member of the type used in thermostats sensitive to temperature variations caused by variations in current intensity.
