<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

CONTINUOUS OPERATION AND RECOVERY OVEN FOR THE TREATMENT OF
MATERIALS AND OBJECTS.
The object of the invention is to establish a continuous furnace which makes it possible to carry out, under very economical conditions, the treatment of materials and bbjetso
The furnace according to the invention consists essentially of a tunnel, rectilinear or not, the outer wall of which is suitably thermally insulated and which comprises an inner chamber intended to be traversed by the goods to be treated and separated from the outer wall by a free space. surrounding said chamber on at least two opposite faces, which free space is divided transversely into individual sections communicating with the interior of the chamber by two opposite faces thereof, means being provided for creating a forced circulation of fluid through each of these sections and the corresponding part of said chamber,
as well as means for conditioning (for example heating or cooling) the fluid during the circulation in at least a certain number of these sections, while a circulation of fluid is also created in the longitudinal direction of the furnace, in countercurrent by relative to the direction of movement of the objects to be processed.
Also according to the invention, said chamber is formed by a succession of individual sections provided with individual means for circulating fluid and optionally with means for heating or other conditioning thereof, in such a way that the construction of a furnace can s '' to be carried out very quickly by assembling the desired number of individual sections established in advance, the insulating coating being able to be applied in advance to the various sections, or, if preferred, to be applied to all the sections after their assembly.
Other features and advantages of the invention will result from the description of an exemplary embodiment, given below with reference to the appended schematic drawings, in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>

Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken respectively along line III-III and line IV-IV of FIG. 1;
Fig. 5 is a partial view in longitudinal section of an alternative construction of the furnace;
Figs. 6 and 7 show two construction variants in cross section;
Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of another embodiment of the oven '
Fig. 9 is a view at the end of this end, and
Fig, 10 is a partial view in longitudinal section of another variant.
The treatment chamber of the tunnel kiln comprises a number of elementary chambers 1, each formed of a tubular box of rectangular section or of any other suitable shape, this box comprising two opposite solid walls 2, connected by a wall. perforated 3 and a solid wall 4 with central opening 5. These four walls can be made of sheet metal and are fixed, for example by welding, to the end walls 6 of the box, which have the shape of a frame and constitute the abutment and assembly faces of the various boxes. These are closed on the outside by an envelope 7, delimiting with the walls 2, 3, 4, a free space 8 surrounding the chamber 1, for the circulation of fluid which can be created by a turbine 9, actuated by a shaft 10.
The shafts 10 can be ordered individually, in groups or all simultaneously.
The increase or decrease in the transverse circulation speed of the fluid can thus be varied at will to increase or decrease the intensity of the heat exchange between the fluid and the treated materials, thanks to the variation in the displacement speed of this fluid in contact with these materials.
At the ends of the furnace, one can optionally provide two small compartments 11, 12, into which open ducts 13, 14 connected respectively to the suction 15 and delivery 16 ducts of a turbine 17. The chambers 11, 12 have respectively. .'an inlet opening 18 and an outlet opening 19 for goods, for example bottles 20, which are moved through the oven by a perforated conveyor belt 21, controlled by means not shown. The openings 18, 19 can be closed by any suitable doors or curtains.
The insulating liner 22 can be applied in advance to the boxes, or be applied on site, during the assembly of the furnace. In the latter case, the walls 6 must not protrude outside the casing 7.
During the treatment process, the material should generally be heated gradually to reach the treatment temperature, then be held at approximately that temperature for the desired time, and finally be cooled. According to the invention, this heating is obtained by heating the circulating fluid in the treatment zone, for example by means of electric resistors 23 arranged in the space 8 of the boxes forming the central part of the furnace. In order to avoid harmful eddies of fluid in the space 8, the corners thereof may be rounded, while it is also advantageous to have a central deflector 24 on the bottom of this space.
In addition, the circulation of fluid in the longitudinal direction cools the products in the cooling zone (three boxes on the right hand side in the example illustrated) and recovers the calories given up by these products, to transport them to the treatment zone and then to the progressive heating zone (three boxes on the left hand
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in the drawing). This results in a serious energy saving.
At the point where the cooling of the products is to begin, the longitudinal circulation fluid, which is colder than the products in the cooling zone, must be brought to a temperature exceeding that of the products which it will subsequently encounter. To this end, this fluid can, for example, be extracted at the end of the cooling zone, by a duct 34 which contains heating means (not shown) and which reintroduces the fluid into a subsequent compartment of the furnace.
The longitudinal circulation of fluid can be carried out in a closed circuit, ùn any fluid purification system which can, if necessary, be interposed in the circuit, which can optionally be provided with a cooling system, in the event that the fluid exiting the furnace through conduits 13 would have a higher temperature than that desired for the fluid introduced through conduits 14. The fluid may consist of an atmosphere specially adapted to the kind of treatment to be performed, eg. an oxidizing, neutral or reducing atmosphere, disinfectant or sterilizing products, or products which react with the objects or materials to be treated or cooked.
The fluid can optionally, in whole or in part, be introduced and / or withdrawn at one or more points between the ends of the furnace. The fluid can also be regenerated or part of it removed and replaced with fresh fluid.
The furnace according to the invention allows great flexibility in the adjustment of the temperature, so as to be able to easily carry out any desired heating program in each particular case, in particular thanks to the possibility of adjusting the speed of circulation of the fluid in each individual box. , as well as that of the recovery fluid stream, and also thanks to the possibility of varying the intensity of the heating at will in the various boxes fitted with a heating system. The combined action of the fluid flows in the longitudinal direction and in the transverse direction can be adapted to the conditions existing in each particular case. It goes without saying that one can also act on the speed of movement of the goods through the furnace.
The length of the effective heating zone can be modified depending on the nature and dimensions of the goods to be treated. For example, the heating system of one or more boxes can be switched off, just as the heating intensity can be adjusted in each individual box.
It is also possible to use auxiliary means to act on the local temperature prevailing in certain parts of the oven. It is for example possible to inject cold fluid or a liquid whose evaporation absorbs heat into one or more boxes, or to arrange therein a heat exchanger in which a cold auxiliary fluid circulates.
Various modifications can be made to the construction described above, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus, for example, the circulation of heating fluid which is done from the bottom up through the boxes could take place from the bottom up. top to bottom, or horizontally, in all or some of the boxes. In the latter case, the horizontal walls would be solid, while one side wall would be perforated and the other would have the opening which must be located opposite the fan.
Figs. 5-7 show constructions in which a transverse sweep is produced. In fig. 6, the side walls 2 have at their base a continuous or discontinuous opening 25. The fluid produces a horizontal and vertical sweep.
In figo 7, the boxes are divided longitudinally by spaced partitions 26 leaving openings 27 facing the openings 25. The sweeping will be purely horizontal, the fluid rising through the space 28. The recovery fluid bringing the necessary calories to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
heating of objects tends to stand in the upper region of the box and hardly mixes with the transverse sweep. It tends to escape too hot, thus causing loss of heat through the end 18 of the oven. To avoid these losses, a slot 29 can be provided in the side walls 2, in order to obtain a certain suction of this fluid by the transverse circulation.
For the same purpose, light and flexible ribbons 30 (FIG. 5), for example made of thin metal, possibly ino: xidable or refractory, can be suspended from the ceiling, at the separation of certain successive boxes. These ribbons drag on the material or the objects without hindering advancement, and they force the recovery fluid to effectively participate in the transverse circulation and therefore in an efficient heat exchange in each box thus equipped.
Extra thin stainless steel ribbons can for example be used in an arch to anneal glass or to bake decorations on glass.
To force the longitudinal circulation of the recovery fluid and make it run lengthwise through the furnace, avoiding fluid losses to the outside of the furnace according to 14-15-17-16 of fig. 1, losses which are due to the aerodynamic or hydrodynamic resistance in the furnace and to the external short-circuit, a device such as shown in Figso 8-9 proves to be very effective.
A pressurized injection device uses kinetic energy to drive the recovery fluid in the longitudinal direction. This device can be produced, for example, by a pipe 31 capable of pivoting about the axis 32 and carrying a profiled slot 33 of adjustable width, the pipe 31 is supplied with pressurized fluid. The adjustment of the necessary quantity of recovery fluid can be done by adjusting the compression flow rate of the turbine or by the inclination of the slots 33.
Fig. 10 shows a variant in which the turbine 9 of each elementary chamber 1 sucks the fluid through a central opening and delivers it forwards and backwards against deflector walls 35 which becomes the fluid downwards at the front and at the rear of each elementary chamber 1. Deflectors 36 placed under the perforated strip 21 return the fluid upwards to the center of the chamber in question. The direction of the transverse circulation thus produced can optionally be reversed.
The turbines 9 can, if desired, be arranged under the chambers 1.
@ This arrangement according to FIG. 10 eliminates the fluid circulation spaces outside the side walls of the chambers 1, these walls then being able to directly receive the insulating lining.
It should be noted that the present invention can be applied to all devices or ovens such as: oven for cooking, annealing, treating, sterilizing, pasteurizing, whatever the applications.
