IMPROVEMENTS TO SCREWS WITH HOLES PERPENDICULAR TO THE AXIS.
The present invention relates to screws the head of which is pierced with holes perpendicular to the axis of the screw for the introduction of a spindle serving as a key for tightening or unscrewing the screw. These screws, called Hamburg screws, bed screws or cabinet screws, are expensive to manufacture by the usual process, which requires drilling the spindle holes of the screw head with a drill bit by skilled labor. The object of the invention is to reduce the cost of manufacturing these screws.
According to the invention, the head of the screw is made of a flat metal blank in which is drilled or cut with a press, on two perpendicular diameters, two pairs of holes or notches, and which is then stamped in the shape of a bucket in the walls of which the previously drilled holes or notches are made vis-à-vis in pairs, perpendicular to the axis.
The stamped head can be in one piece with the threaded rod of the screw, or else be attached to it, by riveting or welding for example.
In addition to the saving in labor and tools resulting from the drilling of the holes or cutting the notches with the press, the invention also ensures a saving of metal in the manufacture and of transport costs of the completed screws, because the deep-drawn screw heads are hollow.
The appended drawing shows by way of example two embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows in elevation a screw blank according to the invention.
Fig 2 is a plan view, and
Fig. 3 shows, partly in section, the completed screw.
Figs. 4 and 5 represent variants, parts in section.
To manufacture the screw according to Figs. 1 to 3, we repress a

kind of rivet 1 with a large diameter flat head 2 in which the two pairs of holes 3 and 4 are drilled with a press before stamping the head 2 in the form of a cup as shown in Figo 3. In the completed screw head , the holes 3 are made vis-à-vis and the holes 4 also, which allows the introduction of a spindle in two diameters perpendicular to the axis of the screw.
In the variant according to FIG. 4, the stamped head 2a in which notches 3a, 4a are cut with the press, is attached by riveting at 5 on the rod 1a of the visa According to FIG. 5, the head 2b is welded at 6 on a flange 7 of the screw rod 1b.
Other variants are obviously possible without departing from the invention.
CLAIMS.
