PROCEDE ET DISPOSITIF POUR LA MISE EN OEUVRE DE PROCESSUS CHIMIQUES ET PHYSIQUES
A HAUTES TEMPERATURES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROCESSES
AT HIGH TEMPERATURES.
To carry out chemical and physical processes or transformations using high temperatures, until now generated the energy necessary to reach these high temperatures using an electric arc or a flame produced with input of 'oxygen. For this purpose, the material to be treated was introduced into the chamber of a furnace and its melting and possibly vaporization was caused, for example by means of one or more electric arcs.
More recently, rotary kiln installations have also been proposed in which the material to be treated, supplied axially from below, rises upwards along the walls under the effect of centrifugal force and then itself forms a thin layer. protective for the oven wall. The electric arcs bursting from electrodes introduced from the top direct the current on a thin annular layer of the material to be treated, in which it turns into heat as a result of the resistance of the cell. The solid and liquid constituents of the material to be treated to be treated are then retained against the wall by centrifugal force, while the gaseous products of the reaction escape through the surface of the layer due to their lower density.
However, such a working method has various drawbacks.
Research has shown that the material to be treated cannot, in this way, undergo uniform treatment in its entirety, so that there are differences between the products obtained. This results first of all from the fact that the use of three electrodes in itself generates an irregularity in the heating, and moreover from the fact that in the resistive layer itself the position of the preferential heating points is variable.
The invention, on the other hand, proceeds in a totally different way: Research has first of all made it possible to observe that it
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is important, in processes of this type, that all of the material to be treated is constantly subjected to the same determined treatment conditions, so that a treated product is obtained which is always the same.
To this end, it is necessary that, in addition to a completely uniform particle size distribution of the material to be treated, the latter is brought in from above in the form of a thin vein regulated with precision, symmetrically to the axis of the furnace, so that grains which are identically subjected to the influence of centrifugal force rise uniformly along the wall of the furnace and absolutely identical processing conditions are achieved in the reaction zone. approach each other during the transformation into a stream of molten material, forming during their upward movement particles whose surface always remains the same:
-, for all the particles but grows progressively, and constituting a layer becoming increasingly thin
Secondly, the shape of the path described by the material to be treated or the grains of this material is of particular importance. This is necessary to allow the various processes to be controlled at will (preheating, melting, vaporization).
The invention is based on this new finding that the path of the material to be treated and thus the shape of the reaction chamber must be determined by the volume of radiation generated by the energy source.
The desired energy effect on the material to be treated is thus obtained at each point of the furnace, so that the control of the evolution of the reaction is made possible down to the smallest details. The volume of radiation is ,, with the high energy concentrations which come into play according to the invention for obtaining high treatment temperatures, analogous to the spatial curve of the distribution of radiation for a point radiant body, of a manner known per se for electric arc lamps.
Since a hollow electrode is used according to the invention, the energy source is formed by a radiant ring. The volume of radiation generated according to the laws of radiation is limited by the walls of the furnace in such a way that one obtains also determined radiation effects at determined points on the walls of the furnace.
The material to be treated, brought in axially by the hollow electrode, falls on the bottom of the rotary kiln and forms thereon a cone which widens as a result of the centrifugal force. From this point, the material to be treated again rises laterally along the wall of the furnace and thus forms a hollow volume open upwards and surrounding the radiant ring. According to the invention, it is possible to modify both the effects of the radiation volume and those of the surrounding furnace chamber formed by the material to be treated during flowing, as well as the relative position of the two and consequently the nature of their reciprocal influence.
If, for example, an axially introduced mixing stream is allowed to extend in the manner described under the influence of centrifugal force to form a constantly increasing surface with an ever smaller layer thickness, as if it were passed between rollers calibration, we can then modify the process by changing for example the diameter or height of the furnace, or the speed of rotation. It then becomes possible to give the material to be treated determined surfaces in certain zones of the oven.
However, it is also possible to modify the passage of energy in the hollow electrode, therefore the current and the working voltage of the annular electric arc or the quantity of oil forming fuel and the oxygen content of the combustion air of the annular flame, and consequently vary the primary radiation temperature. This then acts on the temperature drop between the radiant ring and the surface zone each time considered of the material to be treated.
It is also possible, on the one hand, to modify the direction of the radiant ring relative to the material to be treated, for example by an appropriate conformation of the base of the combustion zone on the electrode.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
hollow, or the direction of the burning gas escaping from it with respect to the material and, on the other hand, to modify the distance between the hollow electrode and the material to be treated, for example by means of a height adjustment .
In this way, each point of the material to be treated can be subjected to a determined radiation effect.
The three main factors variable surface area at will of the material to be treated, temperature difference variable at will and own radiation effect variable at will, however, form the fundamental conditions to obtain an adjustable energy supply at will depending on the material to be treated. supply of energy adjustable at will according to the invention to the material to be treated makes it possible to totally control the desired reactions or transformations of the starting materials
The advantages of such process control are obvious.
Indeed, when we divide the passage of the material to be treated through the furnace into three zones: preheating, melting, superheating or vaporization, we can then give each of these zones a determined length o But we can also adapt to the needs of the process the time during which the material to be treated remains in this zone, therefore to pass a material to be treated quickly or slowly, according to the needs, through determined zones of the volume of radiation, and to intensify or soften according to the needs of the process the effect of radiation Since, according to the procedure to which the invention relates, the position of these zones in the furnace must be calculated with precision according to known laws,
a reaction apparatus of this type can be provided with means making it possible to influence in an additional way the reaction processes generated by a precisely regulated energy input o It is thus possible, for example, to incorporate into the determined zone internally -

and this at points of the oven determined at will beforehand, under conditions of the state of the material to be treated regulated separately for each of these points. In the same way, it is possible, under conditions which can be adjusted and can be reproduced with precision, take samples or provide agitation, for example by means of suitable devices mounted in the oven
In the case of a gas-evolving process, the reaction gas according to the invention can be taken, unlike the previously known procedure, with a desired differentiation and adjustment, from the annular zones of the material to be treated. determined in relation to the furnace chamber and working separately,
in such a way that the sampling speed is for example determined with precision in relation to the formation speed prevailing at the moment in question at the same point on the surface of the material to be treated, so that one separates with a desired precision and taken to the extreme, for example the reaction gas and the solid or liquid constituents participating in the reaction. Such a procedure, the implementation of which was not possible hitherto, is however to considerable importance for the progress of the reaction, as well as for the speed and the mode of adjustment of the desired chemical equilibria.
According to the invention, the constituents participating in the reaction are then brought into contact inside a volume of radiation with a high energy concentration,
according to a form of path and with a precisely determined area, to be subjected to a precisely regulated energy effect, and they are then separated in the same way in a determined and precisely regulated mannero It is thus possible, according to the invention, to subject the substances collected for the reaction or the constituents of the reaction escaping from them to the desired and regulated prior or subsequent treatment. Thus, for example, the routing of a grain of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
carbon forming a particle of material to be treated in the preheating zone in such a way that, under the influence of the determined energy radiation,
it carbonizes slowly under the desired conditions of time and path and then abandons its volatile constituents, but that it does not take up to a given point in the furnace a temperature that is too high, therefore does not sinter, but retains its surface High specificity with high porosity, important for chemical reactions, in order to serve as a carbonized coke grain. The carbonization gas formed from this precisely determined pre-fusion zone can then be evacuated directly out of the furnace, thus avoiding any subsequent contact of this gas with the bodies participating in the reaction.
Likewise, the carbon monoxide generated by the reaction can also be discharged in the same manner from annular zones of the furnace precisely delimited with regard to their position, degree of temperature, formation pressure, etc. ... without it bringing with it in the form of dust elements participating in the reaction or that it:
produces undesirable chemical reactions by subsequently coming into contact with the elements participating in the first reaction o It is thus possible, according to the invention, to regulate these conditions of fundamental importance for the development of processes up to extremely thin differential layers, and to regulate their evolution with precision, in the sense that the formation pressure and the possibility of escape are each time determined with respect to each other, since the conditions are calculated in advance for these two factors and can therefore be maintained during operation.
The description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawings given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.

The fi.go 6 is a cross-sectional view of the apparatus shown in figure 50
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 in this case, an annular electric arc o is used as energy source.
The electric current, which can be determined in a manner known per se by adjusting the total resistance of the circuit or the applied voltage, reaches the reaction apparatus via an axial hollow electrode 8 symmetrical to this axis. lower part of the hollow electrode, it passes in the form of an annular electric arc 9 symmetrical to the axis of the apparatus towards the counter-electrode, which is formed by a conductive lining 17, for example made of carbon It conducts the current to the metal casing of the furnace housing 10,
from which it returns by a collector contact 19 acting at 18 to the energy source o The arrangement of the lower end of the hollow electrode 8 and of the lining 17 serving as a counter-electrode is such that the arc electric ring is elongated as needed in a desired direction, for example outward. In this way, in the form of the annular arc 9, a source of energy is obtained, the primary temperature of which can be brought between 3000 and 50,000 C, and even to a higher value, and with which it is possible to modify the main direction of the beam and its angle of inclination with respect to the axis.
Since the height of the hollow electrode 8 in the furnace can be adjusted at will, a volume of radiation is obtained which can be adjusted with precision according to the intensity of the energy input and according to the main direction and the distance by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
compared to the furnace chamber, in which the annular arc in this case forms a symmetrical nucleus o Its effects can be calculated for each point of the furnace, since they follow the known laws of radiation o This is all the more exact as one according to the invention uses high energy concentrations not less than 10 kW per liter of the capacity of the reaction chamber,
and as a consequence of the radiation sources defined in a particularly precise manner. The material to be treated, in the form of fine grains, is located inside the hollow electrode 8 in the distributor part 21, and flows downwards out of this in the form of a thin adjustable axial mixing stream, so that on the rotating seal 17 of the housing 10 a mixing cone Ao forms as a result of the rotation or centrifugal force exerted, the mixing vein spreads downward on the surface formed by the generatrix of the cone A to form an annular surface constantly and uniformly increasing in a spiralo Under the influence of the radiation coming from the annular arc 9, it begin,
to be melted by energy absorption, so that as a result of the reduced viscosity the controlled increase in the surface area within the melting zone B, for example, adjacent to the zone A undergoes a notable specific increase per unit of tempso This has an important significance for the devolution of the reaction because, in this way, the reaction material has at this important point a maximum specific surface area to the effect of the radiant energy coming from the annular arc 90 In addition, the gases of reactions released have a specific release surface of corresponding importance for a constantly decreasing layer thickness o In this way,
a reaction apparatus of the type shown in fig. 1 satisfies, in a way hitherto unknown, the extreme conditions of a chemical or physical reaction requiring a large specific energy with a spontaneous initiation of the reaction. of the reaction are entrained as dust by the reaction gases, and at the same time the fine-grained constituents of the reaction are rapidly and practically charged with energy in a uniform and homogeneous manner. 'follows a rapid and yet precisely controllable evolution of the reaction. Immediately after the melting zone B, the material to be treated passes through the superheating zone C.
As a result of the larger spacing between the annular electric arc 9 and the fact that the angle of inclination of the main radiation becomes ever more unfavorable, the effect of the radiation then becomes ever smaller. But as a result of the symmetry of the general arrangement, this effect remains the same in all the zones of equivalent position o The molten material C, superheated to a temperature determined at will, is discharged by centrifugal effect at 16 above the edge of the rotary kiln 10 and is further processed in any desired manner,
eg granulated or continuously drawn from a receiving gutter by a continuous casting processo The centrifugal effect of the general arrangement facilitates the separation of the molten material into its constituents which differ in density.
From reaction zone B the reaction gas escapes particularly intensely in the direction indicated by the two conjugate currents 38.
and it leaves the subsequent overheating zone C, for example, in the form of a single less intense current of different composition. As a result of the precisely determined position of the two different relief zones, the possibility of collecting and removing is obtained. these gas streams are discharged directly, separating them from one another.
Thanks to a device 22 ;, it is also possible to arrive at a determined point on the surface of the material to be treated, for example at the point of transition between the melting zone B and the overheating zone C in the case of the figure. 1, an additional substance whose presence is only desirable at this point, which can be determined with precision by virtue of the working method which is the subject of the invention.
With a similar device that 1-'one can for example move upward and downward, a determined stirring effect is obtained when it comes into contact with the material to be treated driven in rotation. the wall of the furnace 10 a row of orifices providing a uniform distribution in the manner of a sieve, and through which, under the influence of centrifugal force, certain components
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
can escape to the outside (outside the superheating zone C) provided that their properties correspond to the conditions of resistance to flow present.
A device of this type only has a precise effect if one creates and if one maintains these conditions at the exhaust level (in the overheating zone), with the working mode according to the invention. modifying the speed of rotation, it is for example possible to vary in a simple and desired manner both the flow speed and the surface of the material. The same result is obtained by modifying the dimensions of the oven 10 or of the lining 170
It can be seen from Figure 1 that the reaction gas streams 38 or 35 can be directed, in a separate fashion, to a cooling or condensing system 36 directly covering the capacity of the furnace for further processing. The hollow electrode penetrates at 31 in a gas-tight manner but remains mobile.
A foreign gas can be introduced at 37, this gas being formed for example by oxygen and then causing with the reaction gas 38, in the reaction chamber, additional chemical reactions, without coming into contact with the main chamber. . It has been shown in 20 that it is possible to optically transmit to the outside an image of the high illuminating processes which occur inside the furnace.
The reaction apparatus shown in FIG. 1 is, moreover, designed to take account of the usual construction principles of this type of apparatus. It is for example journaled at 11 on a ball bearing and is driven by means of a pulley 23. The hollow axial shaft 14 automatically sucks cooling water from the tank 12 into the cavity or internal chamber. of the double-walled casing of the furnace, allows this water to overflow at 16 above the upper edge 'and let it flow downwards into the outer liner 18 and then outwards through the outer axial tube 15.
The base 13 carrying the reaction apparatus can be mounted in an adjustable manner in height relative to the fixed ground, so that the rotating part containing the material to be treated can be moved relative to a fixed hollow electrode 8, although in self also adjustable.
In Figure 2, which is a plan view of the reaction apparatus according to Figure 1, we see in particular the absolute symmetry of the preheating zone of cone A, of the fusion or reaction zone B, of the next overheating zone C, as well as an additional adduction of substance 22 at the boundary between these two zones, the zones being arranged one after the other in a manner determined by adjustment, the sieve orifices uniformly distributed 34 provided in the wall of the furnace, and the symmetrical ring 16 for the passage of the final superheated melting material above the edge of the furnace 10.
FIG. 3 shows the application of the invention to a reaction apparatus which, instead of operating with an annular electric arc, works with a system of annular burners 28. In this case, the hollow electrode has the form of a hollow tube 27 adjustable vertically.
In its casing in the form of a hollow body pass in a downward direction, the fuel 25 and the oxygen 26, which escape at the lower end of the hollow tube 27 in the form of the flame ring 28 evenly distributed.

In FIG. 3, the hollow tube 27 has the form of an axial and symmetrical mixing hopper whose conical lower sides protrude into the actual chamber of the furnace and are subsequently heated by the heat taken from the reaction gases. They give up the absorbed heat to the mixture 21 sliding internally downwards evenly along
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
these conical flanks, so that water in the form of vapor and subsequently carbonization gases escape. The vapor can be taken from the annular gap 32 and the gases from the separate chamber 33 of the inner tube.
A plan view corresponding to the apparatus shown in figure 3 is shown as shown in figure 40
The effect obtained when moving the hollow tube 27 (with the annular flame 28 'which is simple here) relative to the rotary system and to the material to be treated has been shown in FIG. at the same time slightly reduces the rotation and thus the centrifugal force, also lowering somewhat the primary temperature generated by the energy source. In this case, according to the invention, certain but quite different influences result from the point of view of their effect on the reaction process o The depth of attack of the energetic radiation decreases o The volume of radiation or the furnace chamber,
which is displaced downwards in the case of FIG. 3, then fills with molten material during cooling 30, until the thermal equilibrium between the input and the energy consumption is again re-establishment As a result of the smaller centrifugal effect, the surface parabolic curve of the material to be treated during movement flattens out, and the annular flame 28 'takes on another form o The effect of this is in the material to be treated, an adduction lower energy but still remaining uniform.
The reaction material can then already be taken, at a lower temperature, from the melting zone B, above the annular edge 16, so without overheating. It is possible in this way to shift the temperature curve in the material to be treated, its extreme temperatures, the temperature isotherms inside the furnace chamber or the radiant volume, in a symmetrical way and in the desired way, and to adapt them to the needs of the evolution of the reaction.
It is seen from Figure 6 which is a sectional view through a reaction apparatus of the type operating as shown in Figure 5 and by comparison with the corresponding section shown in Figure 4, the fundamentally modified "fill" for a. same height position in the device.
In the case of figure 6, the cut is made through the fuxion zone B, and in the case of figure 4 through the upper part of the superheating zone C, after which a further vaporization zone has been indicated. Do
The possibilities of use of the invention are not limited to this example. The method forming the subject of the invention can, on the contrary, be used for all types of chemical and physical processes at high temperature, and the same is true of device provided by the invention and usable for its implementation. Modifications can also be made to the embodiments described, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
