<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On peut supprimer ces pertes ou du moins les réduire, lorsque, conformément à l'invention, les capacités calorifiques par unité de volume du récupérateur des parties du remplissage auxquelles appartiennent les sur- faces d'entrée du récupérateur, sont plus grande que celles des parties inter- médiaires ;

RECOVERY FOR HOT GAS PISTON MACHINES.
It is known to produce recuperators for hot gas piston machines in such a way that, in the main direction of the gas flow, the filling is formed by parts with different heat capacity per unit of gas. volume of the recuperator. By "hot gas piston machine" is meant here both a hot gas piston engine, a refrigeration machine operating on the reverse principle to that of the hot gas engine, or a pump thermal operating according to this principle.
The object of the known construction is to minimize the aerodynamic losses of the gas passing through the recuperator. In fact, when the gas circulates from the cold side towards the hot side of the recuperator, it undergoes a certain heating, so that the same quantity of gas will have, on the hot side, a greater volume than on the cold side. Therefore, if the flow sections of the recuperators were the same on the hot side and the cold side, the gas velocity would be greatest on the hot side, so that the aerodynamic losses would be greatest on this side. According to the aforementioned proposal, one could avoid these large aerodynamic losses on the hot side by increasing the passage section of the recuperator on this side.
However, the known construction has a drawback that the heat capacity of the filling increases from the cold side to the hot side.
The Applicant has realized that other reasons also militate in favor of a recuperator whose filling has different heat capacities in the main direction of the gas flow.
In fact, in hot gas piston machines, temperature fluctuations occur both in the enclosure which is connected to the hot side of the recuperator, and in the enclosure which is connected to the cold side,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
so that the gas enters the recuperator at a variable temperature. Tests have shown that these fluctuations lead to a decrease in the efficiency of the recuperator compared to the theoretical efficiency. These fluctuations, which occur above all near and in the inlet surfaces of the recuperator, while diminishing towards the middle, in fact causing additional aerodynamic losses.
These losses can be eliminated or at least reduced when, in accordance with the invention, the heat capacities per unit volume of the recuperator of the parts of the filling to which the inlet surfaces of the recuperator belong are greater than those of the recuperator. intermediate parts;
Preferably, the heat capacities of the two parts of the filling to which the inlet surfaces of the recuperator belong are practically equal.
In a particularly simple form of construction of the recuperator according to the invention, the filling consists of at least three parts located perpendicular to the main direction of the gas flow.
It has been found that in certain cases particularly advantageous results are obtained when, according to another embodiment of the invention, the heat capacities of the filling decrease from the inlet surfaces towards the medium.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the filling parts which form the entry surfaces are formed by layers of metal strip wound with a certain clearance.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing being, of course, part of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a hot gas piston engine.
Fig. 2 is a section and Fig. 3 a plan view of the recuperator used in this engine. This recuperator has three layers.
Fig. 4 is a section through a recuperator in which the changes in heat capacity are nearly linear.
The hot gas piston engine shown in Fig. 1, is a motor of the sweeper type; it comprises a cylinder 1 in which move, with a constant offset, a sweeper 2 and a piston 3. The sweeper 2 is coupled, by a connecting rod 4, to a crank 5 of the crankshaft 6. Similarly, the piston 3 is coupled by a linkage 7, to the crank 8 of the crankshaft. The enclosure formed above the sweeper 2 is the hot chamber 9 and the latter communicates, via the heater 10, the recuperator 11 and the refrigerant 12, with the enclosure 13 formed between the sweeper and the heater. piston. Enclosure 13 is the cold room of the machine. The engine has a burner 14 which allows heat energy to be supplied to the. heater.
The recuperator is annular and consists of several layers. The outer layers 15 and 16 have a higher heat capacity than the middle layers 17.
Fig. 2 is a section through the recuperator made up of three parts. The outer parts 20 and 21 consist of the wound metal strip, as shown in the plan view of FIG. 3. The heat capacity of these outer layers, to which the inlet surfaces ¯ 22 and 23 belong, is, for example, 0.25 gr. cal / cm3 C. The in- part. 24 is formed by coiled metal wire 50 in diameter and this layer has a heat capacity of 0.12 gr. cal / cm3 C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 4 shows a recuperator constituted by a large number of layers in which, starting from the outer layers 30 and 31, the heat capacity decreases towards the middle so that it is smallest for the central layer 32. Thus, the heat capacity of layers 30 and 31 can be 0.30 g. cal / cm C while that of the central layer 32 is 0.08 gr. cal / cm3 C; the difference in heat capacity between the outer layers and the central layer is distributed, as far as possible, over the other layers.
