<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Calorific regenerator particularly applicable to hot gas engines.
It is known that the regenerators are arranged in hot gas engines between the hot part and the cold part of the latter in order to cool as much as possible the fluid which flows from the hot side to the cold side of the engine. and then return the heat absorbed to the fluid which flows in the opposite direction. Through the use of a regenerator, the efficiency of such an engine is improved.
By hot gas engine is meant an engine having a hot part and a cold part which are constantly in communication with each other, the active fluid being in turn in the hot part and the cold part, the disposition
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
being such that the hot fluid endowed with expansive power acts on a piston. This expression therefore applies to the known hot air engine in which the active fluid is air.
The present invention relates to an improved type of heat regenerator which is particularly suitable for hot gas engines. This regenerator is characterized by the fact that it contains a certain amount of filiform refractory material, the thickness of which does not exceed 0.5 mm. The invention is based on the finding that if the regenerator is arranged in this way and is stuffed, for example, with nickel-chromium wire, the efficiency of a motor which is provided with it is much higher than that of a motor provided with a regenerator of the known type in which, for example, discs of ceramic materials are stacked in the regeneration chamber.
The regenerator which is the subject of the invention has the additional advantage that a hot gas engine fitted with it can have a significantly higher speed of rotation, for example 2000 revolutions per minute, than an associated engine. with a regenerator of the usual type in which the speed of rotation is most often about 400 revolutions per minute. This is due to the fact that the regenerator which is the object of the invention allows the exchange of heat in a much shorter time than the known types of regenerator.
The advantageous operation of the regenerator which is the object of the invention is probably due to the fact that for a given volume the regenerator material has a contact surface with the fluid passing over it which is substantially greater than that of the material used in the regenerator. regenerator existing so far, the resistance encountered by the fluid in the regenerator is still low. According to the invention, it has been found that the thickness of the filiform material should not exceed 0.05 mm.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to an advantageous embodiment of the regenerera.teur which is the object of the invention, the regeneration chamber contains balls or wafers of metal wire stacked on top of each other. By subdividing the regeneration material in this way, one obtains, among other things, the advantage that there are no parts along the entire length of the regeneration chamber capable of ensuring direct heat transmission between the hot and cold parts. regenerator.
In order to separate the hot side and the cold side of the regenerator from one another as far as possible from a thermal point of view, it is necessary to make the wall of the regenerator in a material whose heat conductivity is less than 50 Kcal / mh C. For this purpose one can use among others ferrochrome, iron nickel chromium and various ceramic materials.
Said metals have the advantage that the wall of the regenerator can be very thin because of the great mechanical strength of these materials. If the wall of the regenerator is made of ceramic material, the wall thickness must be greater, which, considered in isolation, does not present any disadvantage because the heat conductivity of such ceramic material, for example of porcelain is still significantly inferior to that of ferrochrom fer and other analogous metals.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text being of course part thereof.
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of the regenerator which is the subject of the invention. It consists of a cylindrical chamber 1 which is in communication with the hot part of a hot gas engine by means of the pipe 2 and with the cold part of this engine by means of the pipe 3. The chamber 1 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
stuffed by means of a plug 4 of chromium nickel wire having a thickness of 0.03 mm. In order to demonstrate the advantageous operation of a regenerator of this type, some numerical values recorded in tests carried out on a hot air engine will be given without limitation. The internal diameter D of chamber 1 was 30 mm. and the height H of 8 mm.
A volume of air of 170 liters was passed through this regenerator from the hot side to the cold side and the same quantity of air from the cold side to the hot side, the flow taking place with a frequency of 1000. per minute. The temperature of the hot air supplied to the regenerator through pipe 2 was 600 C., but the air temperature had dropped to 50 when the air left the regenerator. The air was cooled to in the cold part of the engine and at this temperature it was admitted again through pipe 3 into the regenerator where its. temperature rose to 570.
The average resistance encountered by the fluid in this regenerator was about 0.01 atm. The wall of the regenerator was made of ferrochrome having a heat conductivity of 20 Kcal / m h C. Pipes 2 and 3 were also made of ferrochrome.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment according to the invention, according to which the regeneration chamber 5 is stuffed with stacked wafers 6 each formed of nickel chromium wire having a thickness of 0.025 mm. The operation of the regenerator is thus further improved. Instead of metal wire, it is also possible to use quartz wires to constitute the stuffing material.
The regenerator which is the object of the invention is advantageous not only in a hot gas engine, but also in any other device in which it is necessary or desirable for a gas flowing sometimes from one side and sometimes from the other is cooled and reheated in a very short time, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
encountering low resistance.
