<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

IMPROVEMENTS FOR INSECTICIDE SMOKE GENERATORS.
The present invention relates to the fumigations of insecticidal compounds, and more particularly to an improved composition for the thermal production of vapors of insecticidal compounds which can be vaporized by suitable heating. The invention is of particular interest for the fumigations of combustible insecticidal compounds. or easily broken down by overheating
In most of the steam generators for the destruction of insects. of the type in which a vaporizable insecticidal compound is associated with a mixture of solid ingredients capable of entering into an exothermic reaction continuing by itself with the evolution of gas by sufficient local heating, this mixture comprises a combustible organic material and an inorganic oxidizing agent.
the insecticidal compound being able to be mixed with these ingredients or separated from them in the generator so as to be swept away by the hot gases which they produce. It is essential that the production of the gas stream charged with the insecticidal compound produced by the generator not be accompanied by flames, as these would have the effect of destroying the insecticidal compound.
Since most insecticidal smoke generators whose action depends on the use of combustible organic materials and inorganic oxidizing agents have a fairly low biological efficiency, this low activity can be attributed to the exces- sively temperature. On the other hand, these ingredients cannot react continuously if they are loaded with a sufficient amount of insecticidal compound to lower the temperature of the reaction zone in the insecticidal mixture. below the decomposition temperature of the insecticidal compound.
Much better results have been obtained by employing ammonium nitrate or guanidine nitrate in combination with one or more sensitizing agents to achieve exothermic decomposition without flame.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
continuing by itself with evolution of gas; certain chromates or bi-chromates have been used successfully for this purpose. However, if the biological inactivity of the compositions giving off insecticidal vapors based on ammonium nitrate and chromic acid salts is high, these compositions are hygroscopic and in practice must be packaged in closed containers.
The gases they produce are also acidic, and on the whole it is often undesirable to expose dyed silks or rayon to these fumes.
They can be used with good results both for the disinfection of greenhouse plants and for the destruction of insects in other kinds of buildings, but their application requires care and some skill, because the gases acids become phytotoxic if the concentration of insecticidal vapor is too high. The gases obtained from compositions based on sensitized guanidine nitrate contain ammonia and are therefore also phytotoxic if the concentration of insecticidal vapor is too high.
It is generally known to prepare compositions which produce insecticidal vapors from a mixture comprising a thermally vaporizable insecticidal compound and ammonium dichromate, either alone or in combination with guanidine nitrate as a compound capable of exothermic decomposition. flameless, emitting gas.
Neither ammonium dichromate nor guanidine nitrate is appreciably hygroscopic. although mixtures of these two compounds, stored at temperatures slightly above 35 ° C., tend to react with the formation of hygroscopic ammonium nitrate. But, again, although ammonium dichromate has the advantage of giving almost neutral and practically non-phytoxic gases, the biological activity of the compositions which contain it is much lower than that of the compositions based on it. ammonium nitrate or guanidine nitrate sensitized with a relatively small proportion of a chromic acid salt.
It would therefore be advantageous to be able to manufacture compositions which give off insecticidal vapors, capable of forming substantially neutral and non-phytotoxic gases, with as high a biological activity as that which can be obtained from of known compositions.
According to the present invention, a composition giving rise to insecticidal fumes, comprising one or more vaporizable insecticidal compounds and ammonium bichromate, is characterized in that this composition comprises potassium hyposulphite.
The gases obtained from mixtures of ammonium dichromate and potassium hyposulphite are very weakly acidic, but, according to another characteristic of the invention, the mixture capable of exothermic decomposition continuing by itself without flame with release of gas with which the vaporizable insecticidal compound is associated also contains a minor proportion of guanidine nitrate making it possible to return the gases obtained to neutrality or to a slight alkalinity, this without modifying their non-phytotoxic character.
The compositions giving rise to insecticidal fumes according to the present invention are not hygroscopic and have high biological activity. They give a friable ash which contains only a very small proportion of the insecticidal compound, and their reaction temperature tends to be low. slightly lower than that of the smoke-producing compositions known to date, which may explain, to a certain extent, their higher biological activity.
In these compositions, the weight ratio between the amount of potassium hyposulfite and ammonium dichromate is preferably between 2: 3 and 3: 2. The ratio by weight of guanidin nitrate to the combined weights of potassium hyposulfite and ammonium dichromate is not more than 1; 4, and preferably of the order of 1:

can vary between 19100 and 3s2, depending on the insecticidal compound used. 'A cartridge consisting of a charge of the composition, and of a casing for this charge, may advantageously comprise a tip of a wick or primer or other firing composition in contact with the fumigation charge, in the purpose of facilitating the ignition thereof with an ordinary match, an electric primer head or other source of ignition. The fumigant charge may be in compact form, and the powder mixture of ingredients may be compressed to obtain it. The mixture can also be compacted using a binder or adhesive, and can be extruded or molded into shape.
The fumigation charge may also be lightly packed into a cartridge comprising a wrapper of paper or other suitable material.
