<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO COMPOSITIONS THAT CAN BE MOLDED.
This invention relates to improvements relating to moldable compositions comprising resinous binders and fibrous fillers serving as reinforcing agents.
In compositions which can be molded, based on resinous binders, it is customary to incorporate fibrous fillers, with the main aim of increasing the mechanical strength of the molded product. The fibrous material can be in discontinuous form and can, for example, be example, be wood powder, short cotton fibers or small pieces of fabric. Compositions reinforced with fillers of this kind are commonly employed when it comes to molding articles of more or less complicated shape.
Alternatively, the filling material may be in continuous form and may consist, for example, of sheets of paper or textile material; these fillers in continuous form, when impregnated with a resinous binder, are normally layered and molded into laminated sheets or other laminated articles.
The fibrous filler can not only increase the strength of the molded product but also modify other properties of the resinous binder. Thus, British Patent Specification No.5940579 describes a composition comprising, arranged in any way, filaments, threads, cords, pieces of tape or fabric, of nylon, coated and / or impregnated. of a curable synthetic phenolaldehyde resin binder. These compositions can be molded to form articles which in addition to having good impact resistance, excellent electrical properties and dimensional stability, even under humid conditions.
It is an object of the present invention to prepare a composition which can be molded to form articles which, compared to articles molded from the above compositions, have greater strength.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
yellowing due to light and greater resistance to the carbonizing effect of an electric arc and can be heated to a higher temperature before buckling or blistering occurs. Other objects of the invention are to produce moldings which are characterized by the absence of odor, by a degree of flexibility sufficient to reduce the tendency to crack around inserts, and by increased strength. at the water.
The inventor has now found that a combination of the above desirable properties can be obtained by choosing an unsaturated polyester thermosetting resin as the resinous binder and by employing nylon in the form of filaments, threads or fabric as the filling material. associated with it The use of nylon filler with a thermosetting polyester resin binder is of particular value because some fillers, such as certain types of asbestos and wood powder, which are suitable for being used with other resinous binders, such as phenolic resin, have an inhibitory effect on the curing of the polyester resin.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a moldable synthetic resin composition comprising a thermosetting unsaturated polyester resin as defined below and an associated fibrous filler material which contains nylon as defined below. hereinafter, in the form of filaments, threads or fabric.
The nylon filler may be partially replaced by another filler or by other fillers, e.g. mineral fillers.
The term "nylon" as used in this specification is that which is commonly accepted as a generic term for all fiber-forming polyamides, i.e. organic condensation products whose molecules contain a multiplicity of structural units linked in series by amide or thio-amide groups, produced by a manufacturing process in which non-fiber-forming organic substances of low molecular weight are transformed into products of 'a high molecular weight to the point that they are able to be presented in the form of filaments which, during cold drawing,
acquire a true fibrous structure recognizable on X-ray examination. These synthetic polyamides are obtained by heating mono-aminocarboxylic acids or by interaction of suitable diamines and bibasic carboxylic acids. Their production has already been described.
The thermosetting unsaturated polyester resin to which the present invention relates consists of or is prepared from an ester or an ester compound containing at least two olefinic bonds in the molecule, both of which may be present in the alcoholic part of the ester or in the acidic part of the ester or at least one of which can be found in each part of the ester. Examples of unsaturated polyester resins which may be mentioned are those which are formed from diallyl-phthalate, divinyl-sebacate, glycol-sorbate, allyl-methaerylate and diallyl-maleate.
In the case of an ester compound, the initial ester may have one olefinic group only but may, upon polyesterification, form an ester compound having two or more olefinic bonds capable of polymerization. Diethylene glycol maleate is an example of such an ester compound.
The polyester resin may predominantly comprise the partially polymerized ester compound cited above or may comprise a mixture of the partially polymerized ester with the unpolymerized compounds. The unpolymerized compound of such a mixture can be totally or partially replaced by one or more other monomers or by partial polymers containing one or more olefinic bonds.
The resin can be crystalline or its form can vary from a viscous liquid to a grindable resin at room temperature, depending on its composition.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sition and its degree of polymerization.
Nylon filaments, threads and fabrics can be used in different shapes and degrees of subdivision. When to be used for the production of laminates, the nylon advantageously takes the form of a textile fabric. It can be run through a solution of the thermosetting polyester resin, the treated fabric can be dried, cut into suitable lengths and layered, ready for molding, into laminated sheets under the combined effect of heat and water. pressure. Alternatively, the nylon can be employed in the discontinuous form of pieces of fabric or short lengths of filaments or threads.
It can be mixed with the resinous binder in liquid, dissolved or pulverized state and formed into moldable compositions, in heated mixers or between heated mixing rolls, by known methods. Common additions of molding lubricants and plasticizers can be made. A coloring matter can also be incorporated into the composition.
The nylon filler can be used in combination with a proportion of other fillers. Articles molded from polyester resin and mineral filler compositions selected from those which do not unduly prevent curing are characterized by good dimensional stability, good electrical insulation, and good resistance to temperature. water but they lack mechanical strength. Replacing some of the mineral filler with nylon fiber provides them with greatly increased mechanical strength, with little or no detrimental effect on the other desirable properties mentioned above.
Further, the nylon blend / mineral filler moldable composition can be composed and molded with more ease than a comparable composition containing only mineral filler.
The moldable compositions object of the invention cure under the combined effect of heat and pressure but, in general, to obtain a shorter molding time and a lower cure temperature, it is advisable to use a polymerization accelerator, eg of the peroxide type.
By way of example, the following is a description of molding compositions made according to the invention and products which have been obtained by subjecting these compositions to curing conditions. The parts mentioned are given by weight.

These materials were mixed and combined and the resulting composition was cooled and ground as described in Example I.
The blend exhibited greater cohesion on the rolls, with consequent ease of processing, than a comparable blend not containing nylon. The molding composition had the molding power peculiar to products containing cellulose as a filler, while the finished moldings had the water resistance and electrical insulation properties peculiar to articles containing filler materials. mineral pleating

The mixture is worked between heated rolls in order to remove acetone, to advance polymerization and hence to reduce subsequent molding time consistent with maintaining the proper flowability for molding.
The resulting sheet was cooled and crushed,
EXAMPLE V
This example describes the preparation of molded laminate sheets containing nylon fabric. A nylon fabric was impregnated with a 50% acetone solution of a diethylene glycol maleate resin, the impregnation process being controlled such that the resin content of the treated fabric after removal of the material. acetone by heating for 5 minutes at 140 ° C., about 50% drum.
Suitable pieces of impregnated fabric were layered on top of each other and the stack was heated for 15 minutes at 150 ° C. under a pressure of 40 to 50 pounds per square inch. The laminate sheet prepared in this way was characterized by fine stability properties. of dimensions at high temperature, resistance to electrical tracking, good impact resistance and cold drilling.
