Abstract

A mouldable composition comprising a thermosetting unsaturated polyester resin and nylon filler in the form of filaments, yarns or fabric cuttings is prepared by mixing the ingredients in a heated mixer or between heated rollers. The resin, which may be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. acetone, consists of or is prepared from an ester or an ester compound having at least two double bonds in the molecule. Examples are those formed from diallyl phthalate, divinyl sebacate, glycol sorbate, allyl methacrylate, allyl maleate and diethylene glycol maleate. The resin, which may vary from a viscous liquid to a crystalline solid, may comprise a mixture of the partly polymerized with the unpolymerized compound; and the unpolymerized component may be wholly or partly replaced by other monomers or partial polymers. The term "nylon" refers to fibre-forming polyamides, the preparation of which is described in Specifications 461,236 and 461,237. The examples specify filaments of average length of 1/2 mm. and fabric cuttings of 1/2 sq. in. Mould lubricants, e.g. calcium stearate, and plasticizers and pigments may be added. Other fillers, e.g. china clay, may also be used. A catalyst, such as benzoyl peroxide or tertbutyl perbenzoate, is preferably included in the compositions before mixing to shorten the subsequent moulding time.
